Chapter 410: Chapter 410: Clues of Mind Reading
As Mephisto left, Pruck's form began to change, slowly reverting from his demonic appearance to human. Except for Mephisto, no one would be able to recognize his true identity.
However, the next moment, a flame suddenly burst from Pruck's chest. This was not the demonic flame but a sacred flame, and within it, a cross shape could be faintly seen.
Yes, the flame that ignited now was Pruck's original trump card. When Pruck was still human, this trump card remained dormant. Even when Pruck became a demon and Mephisto was present, the cross did not react. But now, with Mephisto gone and Pruck alone, the cross erupted, proving it to be a cowardly artifact that only targeted the weak!
"Shit!" Pruck cursed as the holy flame instantly burned a hole in his chest.
"Shit!" Pruck cursed again, as the demonic power within him surged to combat the power of the cross.
It was unclear if Mephisto had done this on purpose or if the cross was truly powerful, but the demonic power and holy power clashed fiercely. Eventually, as Pruck's strength was completely exhausted, the cross turned to ashes and fell to the ground.
"Damn it!" Pruck cursed once more, recovering after a while. He then looked towards the door and pressed a button, instructing, "Come in, and remember to leave behind any holy artifacts you have from the Church!"
Pruck's caution was commendable. He realized that if he didn't issue this warning, a bunch of Church-related artifacts could rush in and accidentally kill him, which would be truly laughable.
"Find a hundred thousand scapegoats, then notify me. Also, stop looking for information on Mephisto for now and focus on my orders. Arrange for me to go to the Doomsday Base and erase any traces of my whereabouts and this operation!" When his subordinates entered, Pruck immediately issued his commands. Although they exchanged puzzled glances, they dutifully went to carry out their tasks.
As Pruck's subordinates left, a surge of power emanated from Pruck, quietly attaching itself to them before vanishing.
Pruck's caution was warranted because, elsewhere, Robert had just returned to Tony Stark with Steve and Bucky after destroying the weakened clown car.
If only Mephisto had appeared, Robert wouldn't have gone to Tony Stark but would have visited Constantine to gather information about Mephisto and Hell. However, this time, it wasn't just Mephisto but also a powerful human authority with formidable firepower. Ignoring this could lead to trouble the next time they encountered them...
Robert didn't mind being targeted by high-ranking officials, but he couldn't always ensure that battles occurred in uninhabited areas. Despite using Mephisto to trick the mastermind, Robert still wanted to identify the culprit.
Every action leaves a trace, especially when deploying rare resources like warplanes. These couldn't be easily hidden, so Tony Stark might be able to find some clues.
"Have you found anything?" Robert asked Tony Stark as soon as he arrived at Stark's home.
The issue troubled not just Robert but also Tony Stark and his team. This time, Robert had handled it well, but if it had been Tony Stark or others on a mission, they might not have survived such an attack!
Thus, Tony Stark immediately started investigating the origins of the warplanes. Such warplanes had to be connected to the military; otherwise, replicating or creating them wouldn't be so easy.
After some investigation, Pruck's name came up. Tony Stark had Jarvis conduct an in-depth investigation, only to find that Pruck had completely disappeared...
Pruck was a lieutenant general in the army, with several direct relatives in high-ranking military positions. It should be difficult but not impossible to trace his whereabouts, especially with his family also searching for him.
Now, Pruck had completely vanished. Either he was dead, or he knew he was about to be discovered and hid himself in a secluded, single-contact location.
"We found out, but he's gone. He might have gone into hiding..." Tony Stark sighed and said, "That guy is called Pruck, a military man. Others have also identified him, but no one can find him. He seems to have vanished completely!"
"Totally off the grid?" Robert raised an eyebrow, thinking of when he had mentioned Mephisto's name, but he couldn't be sure if Pruck had hidden himself or if Mephisto had dealt with him.
"Check if there are any other people who have similarly disappeared..." Robert suggested to Tony Stark.
"Hmm? Okay!" Tony Stark didn't understand Robert's intent but quickly instructed Jarvis to investigate. Robert then explained the peculiar nature of Mephisto's name.
"So, you mentioned that guy's name as bait?" Tony Stark and Steve were surprised. They hadn't considered that supernatural abilities could be used in such a way. They realized they needed to expand their thinking and not view traditional abilities in the same old light.
"Exactly, but it seems to have failed? Maybe the time was too short, and Mephisto only found Pruck, or perhaps Pruck really ran off?" Robert shook his head, uncertain.
"Actually, I can help locate targets. As long as they exist, they leave traces. No one can completely disappear..." Mobius, who had been inconspicuous, timidly raised his hand and offered.
Mobius had been living with Tony Stark for a while. Although Tony hadn't figured out why Mobius became a scientific vampire, he had cured Mobius of his blood-drinking habit. Now, after several modifications by Tony Stark, Mobius was a vampire who didn't need to drink blood.
Mobius was also listed as a member of the Avengers, though his role was more secretive, and he preferred staying in the shadows.
"Can you?" Tony Stark's eyes lit up at Mobius's offer. If Mobius could track Pruck, it would be a huge help.
Not only would it prevent Pruck from backstabbing them in future operations, but it would also send a strong message to others.
Those daring to undermine the Avengers wouldn't stop at Pruck. If the Avengers didn't demonstrate their absolute strength this time, who knows how many others might try to take advantage in the future...
"I can, but I need to go to places Pruck has been..." Mobius nodded at Tony Stark. His abilities had limitations and needed Tony's assistance.
"No problem, we can leave right now. After Pruck disappeared, his lineage hasn't vanished..." Tony Stark quickly agreed.
"Tracking magic isn't useful in this situation. Otherwise, we could use it... Wait, I've never seen Pruck, so tracking magic won't work. But if I see Pruck's subordinates, I might use mind reading to find Pruck!" Robert had a thought while listening to Tony and Mobius.
"Let's go together. I have some methods to find Pruck..." Robert suggested to Tony.
"Alright, let's go!" Tony Stark didn't hesitate. He suited up and led Robert and the others towards Pruck's military base.
Truth be told, Tony Stark was curious if there was a way to hide someone so completely. If there was, could it be the method Howard Stark had used?
Even if Pruck disappeared, his subordinates were still around. If Pruck had hidden himself deliberately, how had he covered this loophole?
Soon, under Tony Stark's guidance, the group arrived at a military base. This wasn't the place where Pruck met Mephisto, but it was still Pruck's base, and the warplanes had launched from here.
"Who goes there?!" Soldiers rushed out as Robert and the others approached the base. Despite recognizing Tony Stark's armor, they aimed their weapons at him.
From the moment they deployed the warplanes, the base knew someone would come. Tony Stark wasn't the first; other forces had also come to investigate but were turned away forcefully.
"You handle the negotiations. Mobius and I will scout ahead." Robert had no intention of wasting time with the soldiers. He disappeared in a flash, leaving the soldiers bewildered, thinking they had imagined it.
However, Mobius's movement was more visible, and the soldiers saw a blur before opening fire!
"Ratatatat!"
Guns blazed, but most bullets missed Mobius. The few that hit didn't cause significant harm.
Compared to Hydra, Pruck's base had fewer extraordinary fighters, possibly because Pruck had exchanged much of his supernatural force for Church artifacts.
"Who are you looking for?" Robert asked as Mobius entered, noticing his rapidly healing wounds.
"Scents, traces, these will help me find Pruck..." Mobius explained, unfazed by his injuries. For him, these wounds were as trivial as shedding hair. He was eager to prove himself by finding Pruck.
"Alright, let's split up." Robert nodded and vanished again. Inside the base, there were formidable individuals, even some super soldiers, but neither Robert nor Mobius considered them a threat.
"Snap!" Robert appeared before a super soldier, grabbed his head, and used mind reading to find Pruck.
Even with his enhanced abilities, Robert's mind reading hadn't changed much. He didn't find Pruck's location, only some useless memories.
Undeterred, Robert targeted another and another. Finally, his expression changed as he discovered Pruck's orders to his subordinates...
