Chapter 629: Questioning
NOX carefully navigated through the capital city of the Vermilion Kingdom courteously.
After sending Valkor and Drake to different parts of the city, he had been walking for about twenty minutes now, and during this time he hadn't encountered any demon.
'To reach the Academy, I'll need to cross the bridge,' he frowned. 'Which means there will be frontal confrontation.'
Earlier, through the eyes of Blazy, Nox had seen troops of demons stationed on the bridge toward the Royal Island.
The demons were all roughly around level 50. Further behind, he had even sensed an existence that was most likely level 100.
'Well, I'll just have to fight through the horde then,' his eyes flashed sharply, and Glacier's End vibrated inside his storage space as if sensing its master's eagerness to battle.
Nox continued to move from building to building, hoping to find any survivor he could question to get a proper understanding of the situation. He briefly wondered if the other kingdoms in the Human Domain were also facing the same invasion.
Sadly, he didn't have any connections there, so he had never paid attention to the other kingdoms.
The Tristan Kingdom and Vermilion Kingdom seem to be on good terms; in certain situations, they'd help.
Since they were not here... it only meant one thing—the demons had probably invaded them as well.
Nox felt a massive headache rising. Why did it seem like so many things were happening at once? So many enemies, and somehow, each of them was related to him.
At first, there was the Order of the Flaming Rose…
Then the Scourge Alpha and her army of corrupted dragons…
And now, the Demonic Invasion?
He felt like the protagonist in some sick novel written by an author bound to make him suffer. Unfortunately, this was reality.
Unlike the unhealthy amount of novels and anime content he had consumed back on Earth—stories that always ended with "happily ever after"—here, in the real world, anything could happen at any time.
"I couldn't save Zara and Frostpire." Nox clenched his fist so tightly that veins popped along his arm. "I won't let the same thing happen to my kingdom."
He didn't know how it had started. Maybe humans had tried to invade the demons, and they were simply retaliating. But one thing was certain—he would drive every single one of them out of the kingdom.
With determination surging through him, Nox continued further toward the Royal Island.
"Hey, the human offspring was much tastier than I thought."
"Hahahaha, you know what's even tastier?"
"And what's that?"
'These bastards... how can they be talking so casually about eating a human child?' Nox felt a surge of anger stir from the pit of his stomach.
As the footsteps of the demons grew closer, he hastily ran into a dark alley.
Just a second later, two demons with the bodies of gargoyles and two curved horns each emerged. They wielded crude weapons that looked very similar to scythes.
He tried to listen to their conversation, hoping to gather more information, but the two seemed engrossed in discussing how humans tasted.
After hearing enough, he couldn't take it anymore and stepped out from his hiding spot.
The eyes of the two demons widened in shock when they saw the human pop out of nowhere.
But the shock soon turned to delight, and they began to chuckle loudly, their booming demonic voices echoing across the vicinity.
"The head is mine!" the first demon smacked its lips as it charged forward.
"No, it belongs to me!" the other retorted, chasing after him.
Nox regarded them with a calm gaze, and just as they reached about five meters away from him, he made a simple wave with his arm. When the two tried to advance further, they suddenly lost all mobility.
A frown appeared on their faces, confusion shining in their eyes. Then they noticed a chill creeping up from their waists. When they glanced down, what greeted them was thick, ominous ice slowly climbing upward.
"Hmph!" the first demon sneered as it raised its scythe. "Your petty magic tricks won't save you!"
Bang!
When the demon slammed its scythe into the ice, the weapon shattered—stunning the demon.
The other tried as well, and the same thing happened.
It was at that moment that their eyes widened as they realized that this human was not ordinary.
Nox slowly stepped forward and said in a lazy voice that carried chilling undertones, "Depending on your answers, I'll decide how painful your death will be."
The two demons stared into those dark, soulless eyes and felt their blood run cold.
At this moment, the youth with dark hair and dark eyes had killed more demons than even them.

Meanwhile, within the academy, Jack, Nyx, and Theo Fanum moved through one of the secret tunnels under the Academy.
They were the scout team Bridgette had selected. The trio was very powerful, and among everyone, they had the best chance of surviving.
Step. Step.
With the giant odachi resting on his shoulder, Jack led from the front, followed by Nyx, and lastly Theo, who wielded his trusty jewel-encrusted sword.
As he stared at the sword, memories of his father flooded his mind, and he couldn't help but wonder if he was still alive somewhere outside.
"Where do we head to?" Nyx asked the leader, Jack. She ignored his occasional ramblings to himself. She was long used to it, after all.
Everyone was.
"We head to the cafeteria—or school kitchen," he said.
"Why? What if the demons already took all the good stuff?"
"Right, I forgot to tell you guys, but the demons despise human food. It's disgusting to them, and they wouldn't even want to touch it. The only thing they seem to have in common with you guys is alcohol."
"Disgusting, huh..." Nyx muttered beneath her breath as she remembered the woman who had clashed with Bridget, forcing them to flee.
'Eve... Now that I think about it, that's the only thing I've seen her take. Maybe brother will know more since he was much closer to her,' she thought.
Suddenly, Theo spoke up after a long silence. "You seem to know a lot about demons, which makes me wonder... where are you really from?"
