Chapter 662: Lord Landon
After Nathan's attack, the Awakened below, along with the ants and dragons, charged fiercely at the demonic army, fighting with tooth, nail, and everything they had.
The elemental dragon spewed flame from its giant maw, effortlessly killing dozens of demons like flies. The frost dragon turned hundreds into ice sculptures at once, allowing the human army to destroy them in one sweep.
A few minutes passed, and not a single human life was lost, but over a hundred demons had already been killed.
Seeing how easily they were faring boosted the morale of the human Awakened, and they began to attack with even more fervor, pushing back the demons.
Boris, the head of the Adventurer Guild, drowned in the thrill as he cut down a demon. He knew that right now, they were winning, but if the demons had one thing, it was numbers.
If the portal wasn't closed anytime soon, they would be forced to fight endless enemies until they grew tired.
Shing! Shing!
In another part of the battlefield, Theo, wielding his special jewel-encrusted swords, was dancing through the horde of monsters.
He was effortlessly slaughtering anyone who stood in his path. Compared to his advanced swordsmanship, the demons were no different from children given weapons.
BANG!
Suddenly, he felt a powerful punch smash into his side, sending him skidding backward, his sword slipping from his arms. He quickly positioned himself, and his eyes fell on the attacker.
It was a female demon, and she seemed different from the others.
She wielded dual curved blades and observed him with calm eyes. Unlike the mindless demons, she appeared to have a cool head on her shoulders.
"You... you're my age." The demon smirked. "Are you by chance related to the one fighting my father?"
"Your father..." Theo frowned, then followed her gaze and saw that she was looking at the ongoing fight between Nathan and the demonic general.
A cocky smirk appeared on his face. He felt the urge to provoke this girl rise in his heart.
"The one pummeling your father? Yeah, in a way." He smiled.
"Good... very good." She smiled. "That means I'll make sure you feel just as much pain."
The two dashed at each other, their blades flashing fiercely, sparks flying about. She stepped back and struck forward, aiming at his chest.
Theo deflected the attack, but he seemed to have forgotten about her other blade as it dug deep into the side of his arm.
She pulled back her sword and licked her lips while he grimaced.
'This fight would be harder than he thought.'
---
In an unknown location.
The black skeleton ant flew as fast as it could, hurrying to relay the orders of the Ant Queen. If left to flight alone, it would take a day or two at most, but the special humanoid ants possessed a skill that granted them short bursts of teleportation within 100 meters.
Thanks to this, the ant arrived very early.
At this precise moment, Nox and the others were just hovering right outside their sixth town when he suddenly sighted a shadow approaching from the distance.
The shadow drew closer, revealing itself to be the black-carapaced ant.
'What is it doing here?' Nox frowned as he willed his dragon to approach the ant.
'Portal opened close to the town?' A look of concern appeared on his face. This was something he hadn't included in his plan when he left the Barony.
After instructing the ant to return, he went back to the others.
"There will be a change of plan from now on," he said.
"Why?" Nyx frowned.
"One of the demons has summoned a portal near the Barony. According to the estimate from the ant, it's over a hundred thousand."
"That many..." Serena gasped softly. "Not even the most troublesome wave was that many."
As someone who had been fighting since the beginning of this invasion, Serena had mentally taken note of the enemies' numbers... the highest they faced during the early times was just above 30,000 demons along with members of the Flaming Rose.
"That's why we need to hurry as fast as we can," Nox stated. "Right now, they're holding back pretty well, but after some time they'll eventually get tired."
"Let's do this then... with your blasty powers we'll be done in no time," Jack said.
"Right..." Nox turned to the town. "You guys know the drill... go in there, rescue everyone."
At his words, the five dragons shot downward while he hovered in the air waiting.
Roughly an hour later, he saw the dragons return with captured humans. When he was assured no one was left, he activated Shadow Oblivion three times in a row, flattening that town to the ground.
Now, only three towns were left.
'Who would have thought a day would come where we would be destroying the same towns we were protecting during the beast tide. How ironic.' Serena thought as she witnessed the destruction of another town.
The next town happened to be Landon Barony. Like usual, the group descended to free the humans, intimidating the demons with the presence of the dragons, but this time around, Nox decided to spend more time here.
After all, this was none other than Jared's town.
Jared left all the fighting to the others while he trailed behind. He walked silently, eyes darting from left to right.
He constantly rubbed his palms together to calm his nerves. Though he tried to put on a brave face, the anxiety was very obvious.
Soon, the leader of the demons, intimidated by the dragons and the even more powerful presence watching like a hawk from above, surrendered.
The demons led them to where the humans were kept. As soon as they arrived at the spot, the eyes of those locked behind bars lit up when they saw the green-haired boy.
"You're Master Jared!"
"Master, save us!"
Jared put on a brave face and stepped forward... these were his people. If there was anyone that should address them... then it should be him.
He took a deep breath, forcing his racing heart to settle. He stood before the caged humans, his voice firm but kind. "You're all safe now. The demons won't harm you anymore."
The people cried out in joy, some sobbing, others pressing their hands against the cage in disbelief.
"But... but I have a question." Jared finally spoke, his voice soft but trembling.
The people quieted down, their eager eyes focused solely on him.
He swallowed hard, gathering the courage that had been hiding deep inside his chest. He clenched his fists tightly, almost as if that would steady his heartbeat. His throat tightened, but he forced the words out.
"What happens to my father..."
