Chapter 104: Chapter 104 ⤞ Temporary Departure from 《 Re:Zero 》
Early the next morning, everyone gathered to bid farewell to Adam.
"Carter, are you really leaving? Is it because of me?" The half-elf girl looked at him nervously, her eyes revealing fear and loneliness.
She worried that her weakness had disappointed Adam, leading to his departure from the earl's mansion. She feared his leaving would make everyone else disappointed in her too.
"No, that's not it, Emilia." Adam shook his head, gently correcting her assumption, "There are just some matters I need to attend to, and I must return home quickly — that's all. Don't think too much about it."
Of course, these words of comfort were meant only for Emilia's ears.
His absence was intended to prevent her from being overly influenced by his casual remarks, which might hinder her from making wise decisions.
Emilia, who had just been harshly scolded yesterday, would now surely pay even more attention to Adam's every word and action, with all her behaviors gravitating toward him and his opinions.
This wouldn't be good for her growth!
That's why he proposed leaving, intending to fade from her sight.
"Is that so?" Emilia patted her chest in relief, her innocent self unaware of how much these people working silently behind the scenes had sacrificed for her.
"But! My departure doesn't mean your trial is over, Emilia. When we meet next time, I hope you will have shown remarkable growth. Can you do that?"
"Yes, I'll definitely work hard to gain the villagers' acceptance and make them stop discriminating against silver-haired half-elves!"
"That's good." Adam nodded with satisfaction, seeing that she could now face the challenges of being a silver-haired half-elf.
Then, Emilia looked at Natsuki with great concern.
"Um, what about Subaru..."
"Ah, don't worry, Subaru-kun will stay here."
"Mm."
Seeing her delighted expression, Adam raised an eyebrow.
Was Emilia becoming too dependent on that brat?
Walking up to Natsuki, he whispered cautiously in his ear, "Subaru-kun, encouragement and comfort are fine, but don't do anything unnecessary. You know she needs to grow, not be a puppet controlled by others for life."
"Calling Emilia-tan a puppet is going too far!" Natsuki shouted in protest, making no attempt to hide his displeasure. His tone softened as he continued, "However, I understand that Emilia-tan needs to grow. I promise I won't interfere too much!"
"Good then! Ram, you keep an eye on him." Adam instructed, asking Ram to supervise the immortal kid.
He hoped this supervision would help Natsuki maintain his rationality and avoid interfering with Emilia's growth.
"Yes, Ram will definitely not let Barusu interfere with Lady Emilia!" Ram promptly accepted his request, then added with a look of disgust, "Ram has a suggestion — how about we tie Barusu up?"
"What?! Ram-senpai, that's too harsh! Don't I have any human rights?" Natsuki exclaimed in shock.
"Rather than troubling Ram with supervision, wouldn't it be better to restrain Barusu from the start? Ram is very tired from cleaning and maintaining the earl's mansion daily and doesn't have time to watch over mere Barusu."
"What cleaning and maintaining? Rem and I do all that work every day!" Natsuki exclaimed, stunned by her shamelessness, "The younger sister works tirelessly without complaint, while the elder sister does the least but complains the most. Can't you be more considerate of Rem, who works late? The elder sister should set an example!"
Though it was admirable that he stood up for Rem, she clearly didn't welcome his defense.
"No, Sister does much more work than me." She said softly, "Rem only provides physical labor, doing work that's dispensable."
Natsuki shifted uncomfortably at her self-deprecating words.
"Rem, you're too lenient with your sister." He said dryly.
He didn't yet know the secrets between Rem and Ram, nor did he understand what weighed on her heart. But at present, his focus was entirely on Emilia — he had no energy to investigate the sisters' past.
"Well, that's how it is. Don't worry, Carter. Not just Ram, but Rem and I will also keep an eye on Lady Emilia. After all, I am Lady Emilia's retainer, am I not?" Roswaal spoke as if suddenly remembering his duties, his clown-like behavior revealing a nauseating falseness.
"Then I'll leave it to you, Roswaal."
"By the way, Carter, don't you need a letter of introduction? Although your name is with the Kingdom's Knights, you haven't reported for duty yet, and we don't know if they'll recognize you."
"Don't worry, everything will proceed according to our previous plan."
"Yes, if Carter says so, I'm relieved." Hearing his words, Roswaal's face broke into a smile.
Adam refrained from warning Natsuki about Roswaal, fearing the young man might grow suspicious and recklessly investigate the clown's background.
Moreover, given Natsuki's current immaturity, he could easily provoke Roswaal's killing intent. It was better for him to remain ignorant and docile. This way, he wouldn't attract Roswaal's attention or be deliberately harmed, but rather follow the guidance of the Book of Wisdom.
"Well then, I'll be going," Adam announced, seeing that everything was arranged.
"Have a safe journey!"
"Are you sure you don't need Rem to accompany you? Have you packed enough clothes? Please be careful on the road, and don't talk to strangers."
"Indeed, the capital has been quite unstable lately, so do take care."
"Take care." x2
With these warm farewells, he boarded the dragon carriage and departed from the earl's mansion.
The carriage sped along the road, trees blurring past his window.
Upon leaving Roswaal's territory, Adam brought the carriage to a halt.
◈ Enemy Detection ◈
◈ Danger Sensing ◈
He extended his sensing abilities to their fullest range, scanning for any nearby presence.
Enhanced by his Divine Protection, his magical awareness spread instantly across a kilometer's radius, revealing everything concealed in shadow.
"Hmm, the area is clear." Satisfied with his inspection, Adam withdrew his sensing ability.
He then began crafting a magic circle.
◈ Spatial Transfer ◈
The magic circle illuminated, and in an instant, the dragon carriage vanished.
Adam slipped into the forest and reached out to the dimensional travel world within his mind, preparing to depart the" Re:Zero "world.
As he closed his eyes, he felt the〘Divine Protection of Magic〙fade from his body. The amplification ceased, leaving him with diminished magical power and an emptiness where fullness had been.
Yet he had anticipated this.
"Return."
With this command, Adam's form disappeared into the forest.
