Surviving In The Freezing Apocalypse With My Alpha

Chapter 6: Ava's Run for Life-Again

Ava Ran fast, while banging over the tin piece with the chair handle, attracting the attention of all the Frostborns over to her.

Dozen's of them, rushing over her like a horde of horror.

"AAhhhh" Ava screamed, as she pushed her legs fast onto the thick layers of frost, her voice echoing around over the whole school.

Making sure of that Riley is safe now and the attention of all the Frostborns were onto her, she threw of the tin piece and the wooden handle, and ran straight inside the building.

Ava's breath came in ragged gasps.

The storm howled, the wind biting through her clothes like it had teeth, but she didn't stop. She couldn't.

Behind her, the Frostborn shrieked. Their footsteps crunched against the frozen ground, their movements unnatural, too fast, too eager.

She turned sharply down a hallway, nearly slipping, her shoulder slamming against a row of lockers.

Another scream tore through the air.

They were still following.

Her heartbeat thundered in her ears. Why weren't they losing interest? They didn't chase like wild animals hunting prey—they pursued like they knew she was still there.

She sprinted down another corridor and froze.

Two students were ahead—sophomores, a boy and a girl. They had shoved themselves into a corner, huddled together, whispering in frantic voices.

Ava barely had time to react before a chunk of ice from the ceiling cracked and fell—

Right onto her shoulder.

A shock of cold shot through her body. The thick layer of snow from above spilled over her, coating her jacket, her skin, everything. She gasped, struggling not to make a sound.

The Frostborn reached the hallway.

Ava pressed herself deeper into the snow, pressing her palms tightly onto her mouth, careful not to let out a single sound

The creatures slowed, looked around, clearly unable to notice Ava.

But then suddenly-

Their heads twitched, sniffing the air like they sensed something.

Then—they passed her.

Her heartbeat slammed against her ribs as she watched them zero in on the two students instead.

The girl muffled a sob, but it was too late.

The first Frostborn lunged.

Ava bit her tongue, backing further into the cold, it creped into her skin, the cold sinking further in her bones.

The boy's scream was cut short.

Ava swiftly stood up turned and ran.

Meanwhile the second Liam saw Ava disappear into the white, dragging the creatures with her, something in him snapped.

His legs were faster than his thoughts, propelling him forward, ignoring the sharp burn in his lungs.

Mia's voice yelled after him, but he didn't stop.

Not again.

His feet pounded against the frozen floor, his pulse matching the rhythm. Ava wasn't going to die alone.

Not while he could do something.

At the same time Ava's lungs burned. Her fingers were numb, her body shaking.

She stumbled into a narrow hallway—empty. The storm had caved in parts of the ceiling, blocking the exits.

She needed a new plan.

A low groan rumbled behind her.

Ava spun—

The wall to her left crumbled. The storm roared in, ice and snow collapsing over her shelter.

She bolted.

A figure blurred in front of her. A **hand shot out—**

Yanked her back.

She gasped, struggling, until a voice **hissed in her ear.**

"Ava, stop."

Her breath caught.

Liam.

His grip was firm, steady, **warm.** She barely had time to react before he pulled her against the wall.

A few feet ahead—a group of Frostborn stood in eerie stillness.

Ava's pulse hammered.

They weren't moving.

Not until—

Liam shifted slightly, whispering, "Are you hurt?"

And then—one of the Frostborn's heads snapped toward them.

Ava didn't think. She moved on instinct—

Her hand flew up, slapping over Liam's mouth.

Her heartbeat thundered.

The creature twitched.

Did it hear them?

No.

Its eyes locked onto where her fingers brushed Liam's skin.

Ava didn't breathe.

Then, the Frostborn's face twisted—and it roared.

Ava barely had time to react before it charged straight for them.

They broke into a sprint.

Ava's mind raced—Dozen's of them were chasing

No time to think—just run.

The school's hallways were a maze of ice and debris.

Liam's hand wrapped around her wrist, pulling her behind him.

His grip was firm—protective, instinctual.

Frost crunched under their feet as they twisted and turned through the corridors.

Behind them, the Frostborn shrieked.

They reached a dead end—a collapsed section of the school.

Ava skidded to a stop, chest heaving.

The Frostborn were right behind them.

Liam cursed under his breath—they had nowhere to go.

A Frostborn lunged.

Ava stumbled, caught off guard.

Liam moved without thinking—he threw himself between her and the creature.

The impact sent them both crashing to the floor.

Ava felt Liam's weight over her.

His arms were braced on either side of her.

She froze—not out of fear, but something else.

For the first time in years, she looked at him, really looked at him.

Not as the school's golden boy.

Not as Mia's boyfriend.

Not as the guy who had ignored her for years.

But as the boy who used to be her best friend.

The Frostborn screeched, distracted momentarily.

Liam gritted his teeth, pulling Ava to her feet.

"Move!" he shouted, shoving her forward.

They burst into an abandoned supply closet and barricaded the door.

Both of them breathing hard.

Frostborn sniffed and scratched at the door before losing interest and leaving.

Silence.

Ava leaned back, chest rising and falling.

"You—you jumped in front of me."

Liam scoffed, looking away. "Yeah, well. You were about to get mauled."

"You didn't have to do that."

He didn't reply.

Minutes passed.

The temperature was freezing.

Ava shivered.

Liam sighed, then shrugged off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders.

She stiffened.

"Keep it," he muttered, looking away. "You need it more."

Ava hesitated, gripping the edges of the fabric.

"You hate the cold, don't you?" she said quietly.

Liam tensed.

A moment of silence. Then—

"Yeah," he admitted.

His voice was flat, but there was something beneath it. A weight.

Ava watched him.

He never used to mind winter.

Something changed in him.

But he didn't say what—and she didn't ask.

Not yet.
