Chapter 59: God Said, Let There Be Ice
Chapter 59: God Said, Let There Be Ice
"It's just like most meat."
There was still more than 200 jin of snake and leopard meat left, in addition to the giant bear's body. And that's not to mention the weight of the bear's body itself, which was almost ten tons.
Anyway, they could at least cut off several thousand jin of meat, right? They had to find a way to store all that meat.
If it spoiled, it would be such a waste.
Even if it was made into smoked meat, that amount was impossible to process all at once.
The six of them had spent almost an entire day making smoked meat with just the few hundred jin of snake meat from before.
"If only there were ice blocks here."
If they could find ice, maybe they could dig a storage room underground and turn it into a cooling room.
"Ice?"
Ginko and Utaha's eyes lit up immediately.
When they came back from the river earlier, they saw ice chunks that hadn't melted yet.
"That's right, there might really be ice there," said Megumi, who also finally remembered.
It did look like there was ice there, even though it was still autumn.
"Ice? Now?"
Jun looked a little surprised.
It was a cold night, but not cold enough to freeze.
"Yes. Tomorrow morning, wake up early, Onii-chan. Let's go see together."
When Megumi first found the place, she was surprised.
She even touched it with her hand. It was cold and clear, and it was real ice.
"Tomorrow morning..."
Jun realized that the sky was already completely dark.
Yui Yuigahama and the savage girl, Nanako, were already asleep.
"Tonight, we should still keep watch. If nothing happens in the next few days, maybe we can stop doing night watches."
Even though Nanako hadn't shown any problems so far, Jun still was a little bit careful around her.
This new camp wasn't as safe as they thought it would be.
The giant bear they killed was proof of that.

The next morning, Jun's little sister woke him up.
And, as usual, he was the last to wake up.
Even Yukino was already getting ready, even though the sun had only just fully risen.
He glanced at his watch. It was six o'clock and five minutes.
"So cold..."
Jun woke up from the straw blanket and immediately shivered in the morning wind.
The weather felt colder every day.
"Let's go, big brother."
The girls were very excited about dealing with the dead bear.
"Is there really ice?" Jun was still a little doubtful.
"Here!"
Ginko pointed to a rock they passed on their way to the laundry mat last night.
"It looks like there's even more ice than yesterday."
Kasumigaoka Utaha looked at the chunks of ice behind the big rock. Yesterday, these chunks were just small puddles, but now they had piled up.
"There really is ice. This island is so strange."
Jun touched the clear, rock-like crystals in front of him. They were very cold, and even had water dripping from them.
It was definitely ice.
Even though it shouldn't have been below freezing yet.
"Not just here, but over there too."
Megumi pointed to the other direction.
Nearby, stones and ice chunks of various sizes appeared on the ground.
"Great, since there's ice, we don't need to turn all the bear meat into smoked meat."
To be honest, smoked meat lost a lot of its flavor.
After finding ice, they needed to build a storage room with it and start cutting the bear into chunks. Then, they would move the chunks inside.
First things first…
Jun needed a shovel to dig a hole. He had to find soil that was stable and wouldn't collapse.
If the underground storage caved in, all the hard work would be for nothing.
Unfortunately, the tools they had were only a few stone axes and a single iron knife that had been sharpened many times.
Digging an underground room in this condition would be difficult.
"Do you want to dig a room underground and use it to store hunting meat?"
Yukino was teaching Nanako, their new member, how to pronounce words and the most common words used every day.
As Jun said, the wild girl named Nanako really did learn quickly. She could master whatever she was taught.
She could even draw her own conclusions from basic lessons.
Yukino-sensei seemed to enjoy her role.
If all students in the world were like Nanako, maybe being a teacher would be the most relaxed job in the world.
"Yes. We found this."
Jun took out a piece of ice that had already partially melted from his backpack.
"I thought we should build an ice room to store the game meat later."
"Ice? At a time like this?"
Yukino was also surprised.
But the evidence was right in front of her—she could only admire the island's weirdness in her heart.
"Building an ice room isn't that easy. We need wood that is strong enough to support the structure and soil that is suitable for building on. Moist soil is easy to dig because it's too loose."
"Strangely enough, the dirt near the ice chunks is pretty solid. I think it can be used. I need your help placing the wooden posts. Across the river is all forest, so we can get wood from there."
"Do you want to finish it today too?"
Yukino could tell that Jun was determined.
"Yes. I think I can work quickly now."
Jun's Enhancement skill could be used to improve other abilities.
After being strengthened, his first skill became locking all attributes at maximum for two hours.
That meant that for two hours, he would not get hurt, tired, or hungry.
His attribute value was now three times greater than a normal person's.
Digging an underground room shouldn't take long.
"Also, the bear meat could start to go bad today. We have to deal with it right away."
Time kept moving forward, and Jun couldn't afford to waste a single second.
"Okay, let's start by building the ice room!"
Yukino stroked Nanako's head, then stopped the reading class.
"Megumi, Ginko, Utaha, and Yuigahama-san, please gather as many ice chunks as you can. Put them all into these snake-skin pouches."
Jun hoped the snake skin would help stop the melting.
"Okay!"
The girls took the snake skins and immediately walked together toward the ice site.
"Yukino, can this iron knife be used as a shovel?"
Jun really needed a shovel.
"Shovel?"
Yukino didn't take the knife right away. Instead, she looked at the dead bear.
"Isn't there already a shovel over there?"
"shovel?"
Jun looked in the same direction as Yukino.
"Where?"
"This big bear has very long claws."
"Claws!?"
Jun understood what Yukino meant only at that point.
That bear's claws could be used as shovels. These shovels are made of natural materials.
