Chapter 74: The Queen’s Lair
Boran put on his old armor again. "I'll make do with this until I get my new armor."
"Can you withstand the Boss with this armor?"
"It won't be a problem. We still have 9 health potions. Also, we've now reached level 40. My durability is very high. But I'm not getting any skill points or upgrade points anymore, I wonder why?"
"I think we might be able to advance our class once more at level 50, we might have already received everything we could before that."
"Really? That's not far off then! I think we'll reach level 50 if we defeat the Boss."
Walking, they arrive at the entrance to Wyvern Valley. As they entered, a Venomwing flew right over Boran's head; Boran ducked just in time.
"What was that! It caught me off guard! I'm starting to hate small flying things, let's kill this boss and get out of here quickly."
Noemi giggled softly. Boran touched his ring and summoned Boney.
"We can more or less guess where the Boss is, right?" Noemi asked. From the hill where they stood, it was clearly obvious where the boss was located.
From their high vantage point, Boran and Noemi could see the entire panorama of the valley. In the farthest corner of the valley, in a commanding position overlooking everything, rose a massive volcanic crater. The edges of the crater were sharply fractured by centuries of erosion, and its outer surface was covered with blackened rock and obsidian fragments. Pale vapor rose from the mouth of the crater, occasionally emitting crimson glints.
"There's the boss right there," said Boran, pointing to the wide area in the center of the volcanic crater.
The only path to the crater ran down from their side along a narrow trail. The path extended to the mouth of the crater with sharp turns, and in its final section, it turned into an almost vertical descent. Just reaching it was a challenge in itself.
Noemi stood at the beginning of the path and shielded her eyes with her hand, looking intently.
"If we have to go this way, we should go one by one. The path looks very narrow, and we won't have room to maneuver in case of an attack."
Boran nodded in agreement. "You're right. I'll go first, you and Boney follow behind me."
When they reached the foot of the valley, the steep path began. They carefully advanced along the rocky ground and path full of sharp turns. Boran led the way, keeping his shield ready and controlling each step.
"We can reach the crater without problems this way," said Boran. "We just need to watch where we step."
After an almost hour-long climb, they finally reached the edge of the crater. Along the path, a few small Venomwings approached, but they defeated them easily, without even taking damage. They completed the journey without encountering any serious danger.
They stood at the edge of the crater, taking a deep breath and looking around. They were at the highest point of Wyvern Valley, inside an ancient, semi-extinct volcanic crater.
The wide, circular open area was completely open to the sky. The perimeter of the crater was surrounded by natural stone walls; the rocks were filled with giant claw marks from past battles and reddened cracks.
In the center of the crater, there was a sunken stone nest suitable for the queen's enormous body. In the nest were smoothed stone egg nests, scattered silver scale fragments, and dried blood marks.
On the nearby rocks, the skeletons of other wyverns that had previously challenged were lined up — the queen displayed both her power and her rule.
The wind blew constantly, and sometimes lightning flashed above the crater; giving the impression that the Wyvern's elemental dominion was integrated with nature. The sky was covered with clouds, but blue sky sparkled in the occasional openings.
"It's going to be a big battle," Boran whispered. "This place is a perfect boss arena."
Noemi looked around and asked, "Where in this pit is the Queen?" Just then, a powerful wing-flapping sound was heard from the opposite end of the crater. When both looked in that direction, they saw a massive shadow appearing in the sky.
The Queen Wyvern was gliding in the air in all her splendor. The creature, with a wingspan of dozens of meters, drew a circle above the crater with a roar reminiscent of thunder. When the sunlight hit her scales, her silver-purple colors reflected across the entire surface of the crater.
Noemi silently took a deep breath. They had finally come face to face with the Queen of Wyvern Valley. As the Queen glided toward the crater, they both quickly hid behind the wall.
"This boss have both powerful physical attacks and different elemental spells. She can pierce through even the strongest defenses with her steel horns. She can also use fire, ice, and lightning attacks together. As the apex predator of the valley, she tightly controls her territory with crushing power and tactical intelligence," Noemi whispered.
Boran nodded with a serious expression on his face upon Noemi's words and firmly gripped his shield. "I'm sorry, but we don't have much of a tactic. This area is too narrow. If possible, stay at high ground and use your most powerful spells."
The Wyvern landed on the edge of the crater with a flap of its giant wing. It landed with a loud thud and extended its head, sniffing the surroundings. It had sensed them in the air but hadn't yet precisely located their position.
Boran and Noemi carefully watched the Wyvern from behind the rock where they were hiding. The Queen moved toward the nest in the center of the crater with her enormous body. With her long neck, tail, and pointed wings, she truly had a frightening appearance.
"Here's our chance," Boran whispered. "Let's ambush the Queen while she's settling into her nest. I'll go down, you and Boney stay here. You can use your spells from here. I'll keep her busy, and you attack from a distance."
Boran took a deep breath and gripped his shield firmly. Slowly, he emerged from behind the rock block where they were hiding and began to move down from the ledge at the edge of the path. The Queen was still in her nest, sniffing around for the uninvited guests who were challenging her.
Choosing each step carefully, Boran advanced, slipping between the rocks. He was taking extra care to ensure his armor didn't make noise. Occasionally, he would stop to breathe, then move again.
As he descended step by step using the protrusions and recesses in the inner walls of the crater, Noemi and Boney watched him from above. Noemi firmly gripped her staff, ready to cast a spell when needed. Her eyes constantly moved between Boran and the Wyvern.
"Be very careful," Noemi whispered, as if Boran could hear her.
As Boran approached the bottom of the crater, his heart began to beat faster. The Queen Wyvern was now only about thirty meters away, and her silver-purple scales gleamed in the dim light of the crater. The enormous creature swung its tail for a moment and uprooted a large piece of rock. Boran immediately stopped and remained motionless.
The Queen suddenly raised her head and sniffed the air. Then she let out a sharp roar. She had sensed something.
Boran hid behind one last piece of rock and took a deep breath. After this, he would enter the open area, and hiding would no longer be possible.
"Okay," he whispered to himself. "Now or never."
Above, as Noemi held her staff ready, she began to murmur a spell, moving her lips. A red light was slowly gathering at the tip of her staff. Boney had also drawn his bow, watching Boran's situation and standing alert beside Noemi.
Boran took a deep breath with the tension he felt inside. For a moment, he closed his eyes. Then, in one move, he darted out from behind the rock block.
Shielding himself with his shield, kicking up pebbles, he entered the open area of the crater. With quick and determined steps, he began running directly toward the Wyvern. His iron-soled boots made dull sounds as they struck the stones on the ground.
The Queen Wyvern turned her head in surprise at this sudden threat. Her eyes glowed with anger when she saw the small human running toward her. Upon recognizing the threat, she immediately took a defensive position – slightly opening her wings and pulling back her neck.
As he approached the Wyvern, the creature thrust her head forward with a sharp snarl – swinging her jaw filled with sharp teeth toward Boran. Boran dodged to the side just in time and simultaneously, with a spinning movement, brought the edge of his shield down on the Wyvern's neck.
The metal edge of the shield made a dull sound when it hit the Wyvern's scales. The blow had found its target perfectly – a relatively thinly scaled area on the creature's neck.
The Wyvern roared in pain, staggering slightly from the force of the attack. Her eyes were filled with surprise and anger – she hadn't thought this small creature could really harm her. She was stunned for a second.
Just then, from the upper part of the crater, energy could be seen gathering at the tip of Noemi's staff. Noemi, gathering her concentration, pointed her staff at the Queen Wyvern and fired a powerful Fireball.
As the fireball whistled through the air, it momentarily illuminated the walls of the crater with a flash. Before the Wyvern could understand what was happening, the fireball hit the creature's back and exploded with a violent blast.
The Wyvern let out a pain-filled scream; the scales on her back were burned and blackened. She slammed her tail to the ground to maintain balance, shattering the surrounding rocks.
At the same time, Boney also drew his bow and fired an arrow. The arrow whistled through the air and lodged in the Wyvern's neck, increasing the creature's anger. Boney quickly prepared a second arrow and drew the bow.
The arrow didn't reach its exact target but hit the Wyvern's side. The creature turned its head upward, realizing there were two more enemies. She fixed her angry eyes on the position of Noemi and Boney.
Taking advantage of this distraction, Boran ran toward the Wyvern's side. While Noemi and Boney attacked from above, he would strike from below.
The Queen Wyvern took a step back, slightly raising her head to protect her injured neck. Her eyes carefully scrutinized the human before her, trying to recover from the shock of the attack.
Boran, meanwhile, kept his shield steady in front of him, carefully watching the Wyvern's movements. There was a determined expression on his face – he had made the first move and gained the upper hand.
