Chapter 21: Ada's Victory
I watched as Arthur tried to steal the oxygen from the air around him and put out the impending fireballs. It was a foolish move. If he keeps getting hit by the fireballs he's failing to break, he'll lose. Alas, Arthur gained more confidence in his trick and slowly walked forward, eyes still closed. The numerous fireballs closed in on him and dissipated just before hitting him. Lucas cried out in frustration, and Arthur continued to walk forward, faster now. A sudden spike of mana sent a jolt up my spine. One didn't need to be a sensory-type mage to feel that. The whole class certainly felt it.
I turned around to see Princess Tessia losing her balance on a rock surrounded by vines, a strange green and black aura emanating from her body.
She shouldn't have enough mana to create such an aura... Is it something else? It feels sinister.
A massive spell hurled toward her from Curtis and his bond.
Sh*t! She won't be able to counter!
Arthur Leywin appeared right in front of her as the spell was about to collide, and blocked the attack with his own body. The tattoo-like rune on the back of my right hand glowed ever so slightly golden and emitted a dull pain throughout my arm.
How did he get there!? It's like he just teleported! And my rune... Is it reacting to something? I don't understand... What just happened?!
Everyone had stopped fighting when we sensed the massive spike in mana, and the rest of the class ran from the stands over to the field and we all crowded around the sleeping beauties. Both Arthur and the President were unconscious, with Arthur being covered in large bruises and burn marks. The Professor ordered everyone to take a step back, and she tried to pick up Arthur. A cute little white fox ran between her legs and stood just in front of the two unconscious students, and released an immense pressure on everyone present. Some of the more feeble-bodied conjurers fell to one knee and lowered their heads before the small fox.
How can such an adorable and seemingly harmless creature possess such a powerful pressure?
Professor Glory attempted to calm the little fox down but with no success. She pulled out a two-way communication scroll and called the Director over to take care of the situation.
The Director walked over to our group and gave the little fox a small pet on the head, then lifted the two students up using wind magic and walked away to the main building Medical Centre. Professor Glory ended the class early due to Arthur's sustained injury and the Princess' strange sudden passing out. Ada, Jack and I walked out of the large field and made our way to the large stone building beyond the training grounds. Curtis and Claire followed closely behind us.
"Where are we going anyway? How can you be sure we can even enter that weird stone building." Ada questioned with a hint of boredom in her voice.
"Claire showed it to me before we arrived. Actually, you are the only one here who doesn't know about it. Jack, Claire and Curtis all know it very well." I mocked.
.....
We walked through the archway entrance of the Colosseum and the duelling platform came into view. Two students were in the middle of a heated duel.
"This, Ada, is the Colosseum!" I spread my arms wide in front of her and introduced the large, round stone building. I led us all over to an empty section of the seating area and we watched the duel while I explained what I knew about the Colosseum. Ada was very interested - as I had assumed she would be - and immediately wanted to challenge someone.
"Oi! Listen up! I'm fighting the winner!" She shouted out to Kai, the referee, earning a loud boo from the crowd. The two students duelling weren't all that special, and Ada would mop the floor with their faces. One student was a wind conjurer with average control over her element, and the other was a first-year dwarf augmenter with a magma deviancy. His deviancy was interesting to watch as I have never seen a magma deviant before, but his performance was disappointing. As a deviant, he has a huge advantage over someone who doesn't have one - especially in this case where the human wind conjurer has never experienced fighting against magma. She was playing her part very well, keeping the dwarf at a distance and slowly cutting him up. She waved her staff over her head, a large tornado forming in front of her and spiralling towards the dwarf.
That's quite a powerful wind spell. Will one of the DC members or Kabuto Volkov step in to save the dwarf? I could do it, but I'd likely just paint an unnecessary target on my back..
The dwarf formed a set of molten armour and braced for the tornado. The molten armour, something he hadn't yet mastered, was ripped apart by the tornado, leaving deep cuts all over his body. The tornado disappeared, revealing a dwarf lying down in a small pool of blood in the middle of the arena. Metal spikes pierced through the ground and threatened the conjurer, Kai's spell to signify to end of the duel. A figure appeared next to the dwarf. He had white hair styled in a rough comb-over, a white Xyrus Academy uniform with a blue caduceus with a red cross behind it on his back and blue latex gloves on his hands. The figure, Kabuto Volkov, the top medical student in the whole academy, knelt over the dwarf and quickly examined his wounds checking for anything major. He placed his palm on the dwarf's chest, and the dwarf began to hover softly over the ground. Kabuto stood and turned his back, walking toward the medical bay with the dwarf floating behind him.
An Emitter and a conjurer! Typically, Emitters can only use healing arts and are a separate type of mage, but incredibly rarely, an Emitter also awakens an element and is counted as a dual-type mage. The chances of an Emitter possessing an element is 1/50 Emitters. The chances for an awakened core to bear the healing arts is roughly 1/150, meaning just 1 in 150 mages are an Emitter.
Not only is he the top medical student, but he's also a powerful conjurer!
I looked over at the two large boards across from me, and scanned down the list of the strongest students in the Academy, noticing the name 'Kabuto Volkov' sitting at 17th place.
Kai announced the winner, the human wind conjurer named Abigail Atlantic, and Ada vanished from her seat in a flash of blue lightning, appearing at the other side of the arena from the conjurer. Numerous students stood up and voiced their anger at the arrogant blue-haired challenger blatantly ignoring the system for fighting.
"Sit down and shut up." Jack laced his voice with sound magic so that everyone could hear him without the need to raise his voice, and everyone who was standing up immediately sat. "It seems being the best fighter in the academy comes with some perks." I jested
"Claire didn't tell you? Students in the top 10 can overrule the systematic order of picking opponents. We can basically do whatever we want. In the Colosseum, the top 10 are more powerful than the Student Council." He said confidently.
"Why?"
"In here, if you disobey the SC, you would get a telling off by the Director at worst. If you disobey someone in the top 10, however, we'll beat you to a pulp and you'd be lucky to be allowed in again."
We turned our attention to the duel that was about to start. "Get ready to jump in. I doubt Ada will play nice." Jack advised me.
Kai lowered his hand and dashed out of the ring, signifying the duel's beginning. Ada didn't move from her spot, she merely stood with her hands in her pockets and a bored expression on her face, clearly mocking her opponent. Abigail, the wind conjurer, waved her staff forward and multiple scythes of wind flew towards Ada, who still remained standing with her hands in her pockets. Blue lightning arced around her whole body and she vanished from in front of the scythes, successfully getting out of the way of the attack. She reappeared less than a metre to Abigail's right, with her hands still in her pockets. To a weak conjurer like Abigail, it probably looked like Ada just teleported next to her. Without waiting for her opponent to form another spell, Ada began to rhythmically blink around the whole arena, the crackling sounds of her lightning hitting the hard ground creating a deep tune. She took her hands out of her pockets, and coated her right palm in lightning, forming a razor-sharp point beyond her fingers.
"'Lightning blade'. Get ready to step in." I looked to my left and Jack and he gave me a simple nod. Ada vanished from her place and reappeared behind Abigail with her right hand poised like a rapier to stab through her opponent's back. I transformed my body into light and reformed in front of Ada, careful to avoid the lightning blade. My knee connected with her stomach, making her cough up saliva and a little blood. Jack grabbed the back of her shirt and threw her over his shoulder, Ada landing on the arena ground with a thump. "Too far, Ada." He said softly yet sternly.
"The winner, Ada from the DC!" Jack announced, to which no one cheered.
"Oh, you poor thing. Are you alright?" A mocking voice came from my right. The voice belonged to Kabuto Volkov.
He's here already? He's quite fast for a conjurer... Did he find a way to augment his muscles with healing mana to somehow mimic augmenting? If so, he's probably the greatest Emitter prodigy in the history of the continent. Something that impossible - like a conjurer finding a way to use their element to heal wounds like an emitter - would be revolutionary!
