Chapter: Silent Currents and Unspoken Bonds

The sea breeze whispered through the silken curtains of the Sapphire Pavilion, the high coastal chamber of Lord Neptis. Ripples of water shimmered on the stone walls, cast from the flowing stream that circled her throne like a lazy moat.

Lord Neptis reclined sideways on a crescent lounge, her long azure hair draping over the velvet cushions like a living river. Her black, water-slick attire shimmered provocatively in the dim light, revealing far more than it concealed. She held a chilled fruit goblet in one hand, lounging as if nothing in the world could ever be urgent.

Before her, two silhouettes approached the throne silently.

Seren Weavier moved with grace — her yellowish maid outfit pristine despite the long path through the coral halls. She stepped forward first and dipped into a low, practiced bow. Her white hair brushed her shoulders, never losing its shape.

"Your Grace," she said softly.

At her side, Zack Erebus stood perfectly still. Expression unreadable. Eyes unreadable. His black cloak swayed ever so slightly from the sea wind, the only movement on his otherwise motionless figure. He said nothing. Not even a nod.

Neptis opened a single glowing eye and waved lazily.

"You're both on time. Shocking."

She sat up slowly, setting her goblet down with a soft clink. The water around the throne pulsed at her motion — obedient to her whims.

"I'll be meeting with the other princesses. Nonsense and wine and war-talk, you know how it goes," she said, already bored with her own sentence. "Which means…" Her voice trailed as she reached over and flicked a finger in the air toward them.

"…you two are watching the Abyssal Gate."

Seren's eyes flickered with concern.

"The Gate, my Lady?" she asked, voice calm but taut.

"Yes," Neptis replied. "The seal's been twitchy again. Something's pacing on the other side. Probably another beast that thinks it can outswim a goddess. Or maybe one of the Deep Moons is stirring."

Zack's gaze shifted slightly — almost imperceptibly — toward Seren, then back to Neptis. Still silent.

Neptis sighed and leaned back again.

"Just don't let anything crawl out. If it does, kill it, chain it, freeze it — I don't care. I'll be in the Cloud Pavilion with the sisters. Don't make me regret trusting you two loners."

Seren stood straighter. "It will be done."

Zack finally moved — just one hand, adjusting his white headband as if preparing for what came next.

Neptis smirked. "You're both so dramatic. So quiet. It's like watching shadows flirt."

Seren flushed slightly, not responding. Zack blinked once.

Neptis waved them off.

"Go. Try not to die. Or worse, try not to bore me with your deaths."

Later: The Path to the Abyssal Gate

The stone corridor leading to the Abyssal Gate was long, damp, and filled with gentle humming sounds of faraway whales. The two walked in silence for several minutes. Only the soft splashes of their footsteps broke the air.

Seren finally spoke.

"…You don't like meetings either," she said, more of a note than a question.

Zack nodded once.

She smirked faintly. "I figured."

Another pause.

"My family," she said quietly, "they guarded things like this. Gates. Ruins. Sacred swords. I guess it's in the blood."

Zack looked at her, expression unchanged. But he listened.

She tilted her head. "Why do you serve her? Neptis."

A long silence.

Then, Zack finally spoke — voice dry, flat, low. But honest.

"…She saved me. Didn't ask for anything in return."

Seren blinked, caught off guard by the rarity of his voice.

Then, a low rumble echoed through the stone — the Gate was near. The air grew heavier.

Zack pulled his twin blades from the black loops on his sides.

Seren stepped beside him, drawing her silver-edged sword from under her apron folds. She looked up at him.

"Watch my back?"

Zack gave the faintest nod.

"…Always."

Together, they descended into the glowing abyss.
