Chapter 6: Choices

*Chapter 7: The Choice*
Mike had spent the last few weeks at the university trying to find some semblance of normalcy. But how could he focus on textbooks and classes when his destiny—his life—was tied to a battle that would decide the future of the Earth? The phoenix had chosen him, a choice that now came with a heavy burden: defeat Aura, the Shadow Emperor's champion, and stop a reign of enslavement that would crush humanity.
But every time Mike tried to focus on his training, his thoughts kept drifting back to Aura. She wasn't just an opponent; she was a powerful force with her own set of powers, and the knights she created—those loyal, deadly figures who served her—only made things worse.
Walking across campus, Mike's thoughts were interrupted when he spotted her.
Aura was sitting casually at the university café, her eyes scanning the crowd. When she saw him, her lips curled into that familiar, mocking smile. There was a dangerous spark in her gaze. Mike's heart rate picked up, knowing this encounter wasn't going to be simple."You're looking different," she said, her voice like silk. "I see the phoenix has gifted you some new tricks."
Mike narrowed his eyes. He knew she wasn't just making small talk. Aura's words always had a deeper meaning.
"I'm not here for games," he said bluntly. "I want to know—are you really going to win this fight at the festival?"
Aura chuckled, leaning back in her chair with a lazy grace. "Win? Mike, you still don't get it, do you? This isn't about winning. This is about deciding the future of everything you know. The fate of Earth, humanity's survival, it all hinges on this battle."
Mike gritted his teeth, trying to ignore the tightening in his chest. He wasn't afraid—he couldn't afford to be afraid—but there was an undeniable weight on his shoulders.
Aura's smile shifted, becoming colder. "I know you're worried, Mike. You're worried you can't win. After all, you have powers now—flame, strength, ice, flight—but will that really be enough?"
Mike clenched his fists, ready to retort, but Aura wasn't finished. She stood up and took a step closer, her presence intense and imposing.
"You still have a lot to learn," she continued, her voice full of condescension. "But I'm here to offer you something... a choice."
Mike's brow furrowed. "What do you mean?"Aura's gaze flicked toward Alex and John, who were sitting nearby, laughing together. "You have two options, Mike. Who will you choose to stand by you? Your best friend, Alex—he's been with you since the beginning. Or your new friend, John, the one who's been helping you train, showing you the ropes."
Mike froze. What was she trying to do? This wasn't just a choice about who he trusted—it felt like something deeper. Was she trying to manipulate him? Or was this some kind of test?
Aura's lips quirked. "Choose wisely, Mike. You can't have both. Not when the time comes. And when the festival begins, I'll be waiting to see who stands by your side. Remember, your choice could decide everything."
Mike's heart pounded. "Why are you doing this?" He took a step forward, the pressure mounting in his chest. "This is just a sick game to you, isn't it?"
Aura tilted her head slightly, studying him with those piercing eyes. "It's not a game, Mike. It's destiny. And if you're lucky, you might even survive long enough to see how the story ends."
The frustration boiled over, and Mike's fist flew toward her. But Aura's reflexes were lightning-fast. She dodged his strike effortlessly, her grin widening."Temper, Mike," she said, her voice sharp with amusement. "You're going to have to do better than that."
Mike's rage flared, but he quickly realized where they were. The university campus. He couldn't afford to escalate things further—especially not with her.
With a deep breath, he calmed himself, reluctantly backing away. "This isn't over," he muttered under his breath, turning toward the door of the café.
"Of course it isn't," Aura called after him. "But we'll see who the real winner is when the festival comes."
---
Later that night, Mike sat alone in his dorm room. His mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. Aura's words haunted him. A choice between Alex and John? The stakes were higher than ever, and he wasn't sure if he could trust anyone—not even himself.
He grabbed his jacket and headed outside, needing some air. The cold breeze hit him as he walked through the darkened campus. He was still trying to wrap his head around everything that had happened. The festival was just around the corner, and it was getting closer with every passing day. His powers—his abilities granted by the phoenix—were growing stronger. He had flame, ice, super strength, and the ability to fly, but was that enough? Would it be enough to defeat Aura?Suddenly, a loud crash echoed through the night. Mike immediately tensed, his instincts kicking in. He reached for his blade but paused when he heard voices—sharp, angry voices. It wasn't just a random fight. Something was wrong.
He crept closer to the source of the noise, moving in the shadows, his body alert. There, in an alley behind one of the buildings, he saw them. The knights—Aura's knights. Figures cloaked in dark armor, their faces hidden. They were fighting, but this wasn't a normal street brawl. These knights had powers—more powers than Mike had ever seen in one place.
The air around them shimmered with energy. One of the knights raised his hand, and a blast of lightning struck the ground, sending sparks flying in every direction. Another knight wielded ice, creating spikes that shot up from the ground like deadly spears.
Mike's heart raced. These were Aura's champions—her creations—and they were far more dangerous than any street gang or rogue fighters.
Before he could decide what to do, one of the knights turned his head, sensing something in the shadows. Their eyes glowed with an eerie light.
Mike's body tensed, ready to fight, but just as quickly, he pulled back, deciding it was too risky. He wasn't ready to take on that many knights—not yet.He turned and ran, his mind racing. He didn't know what this meant, but one thing was clear: things were escalating, and he had to be ready. The festival was coming, and with it, the battle that would determine everything.
---
Back in his dorm, Mike's mind still raced, but now, more than ever, he knew that his powers—his strength—were only part of the equation. He needed allies, and he needed to make the right choices. As for Aura, he wouldn't let her win. He couldn't. The future of Earth was in his hands, and he would fight to the end.
