Chapter 17: Chapter 17
That night, Rebecca, who worked as a journalist, used her secret connections to send all the data to various independent media and trusted investigative journalists so they could publish the case on their news portals the next day.
The next morning, BREAKING NEWS appeared.
"MAJOR SCANDAL! Secret Data Reveals a Crime Network Involving High-Ranking Officials and the Military Organization!"
The headline published by these media outlets shocked the entire city. The news, released by Rebecca, quickly gained traction, with various media outlets verifying the validity of the evidence she provided—illegal transaction documents, secret meeting recordings, and a list of names involved.
The news Rebecca released shook both the business and criminal world simultaneously. Within hours of its broadcast, public attention on this issue skyrocketed. Even major media outlets quickly picked up the story and made it their top headline across multiple platforms:
- "Major Scandal! Dirty Business and Illegal Operations Exposed!"
- "Big Names in the Business World Involved in a Dark Conspiracy!"
- "Who is the Mastermind Behind the Fall of the Secret Organization?"
Public opinion became divided. Some praised Rebecca and Dominic's team for their bravery in exposing crimes that had remained hidden for so long. However, others questioned the motives behind the revelation, linking it to Dominic and Amelia's company, suspecting it might be part of a business rivalry against major corporations.
"Finally! Those rich people can no longer hide the filth they've been doing all this time!"—a netizen expressed their opinion when interviewed by a reporter.
"But why only now? Is there something suspicious behind all this?"—wrote an investigative journalist in a news portal.
"Does this mean a new war in the business world is about to begin?"—a political analyst shared their thoughts.
The major companies mentioned in the leaked documents experienced a drastic drop in stock prices. Investors panicked, and several CEOs began issuing official statements:
"We have never been involved in any illegal activities. This is slander and is happening due to business competition!"—one CEO from a major company stated, trying to restore public trust. "We will cooperate with the authorities to investigate this further,"he added.
Meanwhile, Amelia's company, Clark Event, was also affected. Although Amelia's name was not directly mentioned, her closeness to Dominic, which had become more evident recently, made some clients question their trust in her company and her possible involvement in the case.
Behind the scenes, those who felt threatened by the leaked information began to take action. The officials implicated in the scandal panicked. Some started erasing their tracks, while others outright denied any involvement. However, their efforts were in vain—it was too late for them to clear their names from this corruption case.
Alexander—their now primary enemy—sat in his office, watching the news spreading everywhere with a blank expression.
"Do they think they've won?" he murmured while sipping his red wine. "The game has only just begun," he added with a smirk.
Not long after, a counter-news story began circulating on social media:
"Are Dominic King and his team truly heroes? Or are they just part of a larger game that benefits their company?"
This news directly attacked Dominic, Amelia, and their team's credibility as company leaders, forcing them to face a public opinion war.
---
"This case has already exploded into the public sphere. I'm sure more people will try to silence us to protect their crimes," Amelia warned as they watched the news on the TV screen.
Dominic leaned back in his chair, taking a deep breath, his face remaining calm. "Let them come looking for us. We are ready to face them, aren't we?"
For now, they were focusing on regaining their strength after a long battle with Victor, healing their bodies and tending to their wounds. At least for the moment, they felt safe with their victory, waiting to see the public's response in the coming days before deciding on their next move.
---
A few days after the scandal erupted publicly, Rebecca started receiving various mysterious messages, some of which contained threats. However, as a journalist, she was unfazed—she had long been accustomed to being a target of those harmed by her work.
"You've made a big mistake."
That was the message Rebecca had just received. The next second, the power in their apartment suddenly went out.
Dante immediately grabbed his gun and relied on his hearing to detect any movements. "They've found our location."
Dominic stood alert, his cold eyes staring at the faint light seeping through the curtains. "We have to leave now."
Before they could escape from the apartment, an explosion shook the building. The blast shattered the windows, sending shards of glass flying everywhere. Thick smoke quickly filled the room, making Dominic and his team cough as they struggled to find cover.
"Damn it! They wasted no time attacking us!" Dante cursed, waving his hand in front of his face to clear the smoke.
Rebecca swiftly closed her laptop, stuffed it into her backpack, and strapped it securely onto her back. "We have to get out of here now! They might have already surrounded the place! We need to be extra careful."
Dominic scanned the surroundings, searching for an escape route. "Follow me! We're taking the emergency exit to the rooftop!"
They moved quickly through the narrow apartment hallways now filled with smoke. Other residents panicked, running in every direction to save themselves. Debris was everywhere, and chaos reigned. But before they could reach the stairs, a loud voice echoed from below, shouting, "Upstairs!"—followed by the heavy sound of approaching footsteps.
"They're coming up!" Amelia warned.
Without hesitation, Dominic pulled Dante and Marco aside, positioning them behind a pile of furniture for cover.
BANG!
The emergency exit door was busted open, and several heavily armed men stormed in. A gunfight broke out in the collapsing apartment.
Rebecca clutched her backpack tightly. "I have to save this data! If it falls into their hands, everything we've done will be for nothing!" she said to Amelia, crouching beside her.
Marco fired at one of the attackers who tried to approach them. "Rebecca, get out of here first! We'll hold them off!"
Rebecca hesitated but looked at Dominic, who nodded in agreement. That was enough for her to trust her team.
"Go now! We'll catch up!" Dominic ordered.
Rebecca sprinted toward the emergency stairs, but a masked man suddenly appeared and grabbed her.
"AAAH!" she screamed, struggling to break free.
Dominic immediately fired a shot near the man's head, making him release Rebecca and step back. Taking the opportunity, Rebecca elbowed his face before kicking him to the ground.
They finally reached the rooftop and locked the door behind them. Above them, an enemy helicopter circled, monitoring their movements, while more armed vehicles approached from below.
"Damn it, they're throwing everything at us!" Dante observed the situation anxiously.
Dominic pulled out his phone and made a quick call. "Hunter, we need an emergency extraction! Get here in five minutes!"
Soon, the sound of another helicopter's rotor echoed in the distance. Their backup was on the way.
---
On the rooftop, Hunter, their longtime ally and pilot, arrived with the rescue helicopter.
"Hurry up! I can't stay here for long!" he shouted over the radio.
As the team boarded, enemy gunmen burst through the rooftop door, firing mercilessly.
"AMBUSH!" Amelia screamed.
Dominic fought back, but they were outnumbered, and his ammo was running low.
"You have to get on now, or we'll be shot down!" Hunter yelled.
Dominic pushed Amelia onto the helicopter, but just as he tried to jump aboard, an enemy bullet struck his shoulder.
"AAARGH!"
Blood gushed from his shoulder, but Dominic forced himself to leap into the helicopter. Amelia and Dante immediately pulled him inside just as Hunter raised the altitude and distanced them from the rooftop.
Below, the attackers could only watch as they escaped, powerless to stop them. Dominic leaned against the wall, panting, occasionally pressing against his wound to slow the bleeding.
Amelia looked at him in panic. "Are you okay?!"
Dominic gave a weak nod. "I'm still alive... that's enough for now."
From afar, they could see their apartment building erupting into flames and collapsing. Some people were frantically evacuating victims—residents from other units caught in the chaos.
Hunter turned his head slightly from the cockpit. "Where to now?"
Slowly, Dominic pointed to a location he believed was safe for them at the moment.
Rebecca glanced at her laptop, the screen still displaying the data they had just unleashed to the world. She looked at Dominic with determined eyes. "We've started this war. Now, we have to finish it."
Pain pulsed through Dominic's shoulder, but his mind remained razor-sharp. They had escaped, but the battle was far from over. In the helicopter, Hunter focused on stabilizing the flight while Dante hastily wrapped Dominic's wound with whatever cloth he could find.
"We can't go back to the old hideout. They already know where we are," Marco said with a serious expression.
Rebecca's fingers moved swiftly across her keyboard, utilizing the helicopter's available network. "I'm trying to reaccess the system that was hacked earlier. If we can trace their digital footprint, we might uncover who's behind this."
Amelia glanced at Rebecca's screen and frowned. "Wait ... there's unusual activity detected in the network. Someone's tracking us!" she said, pointing to a blinking marker on the monitor.
