Chapter 23: Walking the Tightrope
Emily's mind raced as she left Julian's office. The rivalry between him and Marcus wasn't just about business it was personal. And now, she was caught squarely between the two most powerful men at Blackwood Enterprises.
Back at her apartment, she spread out the documents Julian had given her. The Blackwood Future Initiative looked clean on paper too clean. For a man accused of shady business deals, this sudden pivot to corporate responsibility felt like a carefully curated image shift.
Her phone buzzed. Daniel.
"Still alive?" he teased when she answered.
"Barely," she sighed. "Julian's giving me access to everything, but it's all too convenient. And Marcus… there's something off about him."
Daniel's tone turned serious. "Marcus has a reputation, Emily. Ambitious. Cutthroat. He didn't get where he is by playing nice."
"Julian warned me about him," she admitted. "But what if Julian's just using me to clean up his image?"
"Trust your instincts," Daniel said softly. "But don't forget both of these men have agendas. And neither is telling you the full truth."
Emily hung up and returned to the documents. Buried beneath the glossy reports, she found something odd an old memo referencing a Project Arcturus. The name was vague, but the urgency in the language suggested it wasn't part of the public-facing initiative.
Her pulse quickened. What was Julian hiding?
The next day, she arrived at Blackwood Enterprises to shadow Julian as promised. But as the hours passed meetings, presentations, and endless polite conversations she couldn't shake the feeling that she was only being shown what Julian wanted her to see.
Late in the afternoon, as Julian prepared for another board meeting, Emily saw her chance. While Vanessa, his assistant, stepped away, Emily slipped into Julian's private office.
Her fingers trembled slightly as she sifted through files on his desk. Most were routine but then, tucked in a leather folder, she found a single page marked Confidential.
"Project Arcturus Phase II Implementation. Approved by M.H."
Her heart pounded. M.H. Marcus Hale.
Before she could process it further, the door clicked open behind her.
"What exactly are you looking for, Ms. Taylor?"
Julian's voice was calm but there was no mistaking the edge beneath it.
Caught red-handed, Emily turned slowly, clutching the folder behind her back. She was walking a dangerous tightrope and with each step, the stakes grew higher.
