Chapter 40: Julian’s Decision
Later that evening, Emily met Julian at a quiet, upscale restaurant. The weight of Marcus's warning still lingered in her mind, but she knew she couldn't back down not now.
Julian's face softened when he saw her, but there was tension in his jaw. "You look beautiful," he said, pulling out a chair for her.
"Thanks," she murmured, sitting down. "We need to talk."
His eyes darkened with concern. "Is this about Marcus?"
Emily nodded. "I have proof. He's been laundering money and bribing officials. And he knows I'm onto him."
Julian exhaled sharply, leaning back in his seat. "I should've cut ties with him a long time ago," he admitted. "But now… if this goes public, it won't just destroy him it could take down Blackwood Enterprises too."
Emily hesitated, sensing the conflict in his voice. "What are you going to do?"
For a moment, Julian was silent, the weight of his empire pressing down on him. But when he spoke, his voice was steady. "I'm not letting him ruin what I built or hurt you."
He leaned forward, his fingers brushing against hers. "I'll confront him. But Emily…" His gaze softened. "I don't want you to get caught in the crossfire."
Emily's heart swelled with a mix of fear and admiration. "I'm not walking away," she said firmly. "We're in this together."
His hand closed around hers, warmth flooding through her. "Together," he echoed.
But as much as they tried to hold on, the battle with Marcus was only just beginning and it would test them both in ways they couldn't yet imagine.
