Chapter 56: The Confrontation
The next few days were a blur for Julian. He had retreated to his office, working late into the night, trying to trace the leak and fix the damage. Every avenue seemed to lead back to one conclusion someone close to him had betrayed him. And the more he thought about it, the more convinced he became that Marcus was behind it.
But Emily… Emily's name echoed in his mind, a constant reminder of the trust he had once felt. She hadn't betrayed him. Or had she? He couldn't ignore the coldness in her voice during their conversation.
Frustration simmered inside him. He needed answers answers he wasn't sure he'd like, but answers nonetheless.
He stood up from his desk and grabbed his coat. He wasn't going to sit idly by anymore. If he was going to clear his name and fix his business, he needed to confront the people involved.
The first stop was Emily's apartment.
Julian stood outside the door for a moment, his mind racing. He wasn't sure what he expected an apology, an explanation, or even anger. But he had to know if she was truly innocent.
He knocked sharply. Seconds later, the door opened.
"Julian," Emily said, her voice tight with emotion. "What are you doing here?"
"I need to talk," he said, pushing past her into the apartment. "You've got a lot of explaining to do."
Emily took a step back, her eyes narrowing. "I didn't leak those documents. You have to believe me."
"I want to believe you," Julian said, frustration tinging his words. "But everything points to you. You had the access. The motive. Hell, you've been investigating me from the start!"
"I didn't" Emily started, but Julian held up his hand, silencing her.
"Then who? If it wasn't you, who else could it be?" His voice rose, but Emily's gaze remained steady.
"You don't understand," Emily said softly. "There's someone else who wants to destroy you. Someone who's been using me as a pawn in their game."
Julian's eyes narrowed. "Who?"
"I don't know yet. But I'm going to find out," she said with determination. "And when I do, I'm going to make sure they pay."
The tension in the room was palpable. For a moment, neither of them spoke. But something in Julian shifted. He could see the sincerity in Emily's eyes. She wasn't lying. She was caught in the middle of something far bigger than either of them realized.
"I'm sorry," Julian said finally, his voice softening. "I was wrong to accuse you. I just… I just don't know who I can trust anymore."
Emily stepped closer, her gaze softening as well. "We can figure this out together. You don't have to do this alone."
For the first time in days, Julian allowed himself to believe it. Maybe, just maybe, they could fix this.
"I'll trust you," he said quietly. "But you need to promise me one thing no more secrets. No more lies. We're in this together, Emily."
She nodded, a small but genuine smile forming on her lips. "I promise."
