Chapter 6: COINCIDENCE
The blade was now drenched in blood, but Gwen stood shocked.
What happened had happened so fast.
Her friend yelled in pain;
she clenched her palm where the blade had cut her.
Gwen hadn't cut Sarah
She cut her friend instead.
Before Gwen could wrap her mind around what was happening, a blue portal had just closed in front of her.
Sarah was no longer there.
"NO!" Gwen yelled madly.
Wobbling between inter-portal dimensions was Sarah and Lucy, her best friend. Her power was portalling.
Sarah wasn't calm, as she was struggling, she wanted to go back, to fight, to deal with Gwen, not to flee.
"Take me back!" she yelled, her voice echoing and stretching through the inter-dimensional space as if her voice wanted to outrun her body, but she kept on struggling.
Streams of violent blue and crimson lights fluttered by like shooting stars. It was as though everything was blurry, and at times stretchy, twisting and turning.
It at times flowed like water, and also twitched and convulsed, it was also as though endless and confined all at once.
"Stay calm, Sarah! Please, just let me focus!" Lucy screamed, her voice in distortion.
She was doing her best to hold her portal together, but Sarah was doing the opposite.
She gritted her teeth. She was getting drained of energy, she couldn't hold it together anymore.
"Sa… Sarah, you have to stop!"
But Sarah wasn't paying attention.
She broke free from her grasp, and it sent them spiralling out from the wrong edge of the portal.
They landed into the woods, rolling and tumbling wildly until their motions slowed.
Lucy stood up.
She was angry.
She had never experienced what she had just experienced while using her powers.
"WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU, SARAH?! YOU RUINED EVERYTHING, NOW LOOK WHERE YOU'VE SENT US!"
Sarah looked around, breathing heavily. She was now sweaty, her head was thumping, and her eyes were still spiralling.
"Where I sent us?! I didn't ask you to help me, Lucy! I wanted to fight, to beat that bitch!" Sarah yelled back.
"Oh, you wanted to beat her? WELL, GUESS WHAT?! THERE ARE FOUR OF THEM THERE, AND THEY NEARLY CUT OFF YOUR EYE, SARAH!"
At these words, Sarah calmed down a bit.
She stared at Lucy and then breathed out, her heart still racing.
"She would have hurt you, Sarah. Thank God I was there," Lucy added, her voice calmer.
"I'm sorry…" Sarah said, bursting into tears. "I was… I… I was scared. I didn't know what to do."
"Aww, come on sweet pie," Lucy said as she went and hugged her.
"That bitch doesn't deserve your tears, okay?"
Sarah nodded as she cleaned her tears, but...
"Blurgh!"
She threw up.
It was the first time she had experienced such portalling, because Lucy wasn't so good at it yet.
"You okay?" Lucy asked, concerned.
"Thanks, Lu. I'm okay… I'm okay," she breathed out, doing her best to reassure herself and Lucy that she was better.
Wiping her mouth, she asked,
"Now, where the hell are we?"
They looked around. It was still dark, though dawn was showing signs of coming up soon.
"I think we are far away from the city. I felt it when you jumped out mid-portal," Lucy replied.
Sarah felt guilty.
She could have made worse happen, for she had heard about what happens when someone messes with portals.
"Well, can't you just portal us back there?" Sarah asked, sniffling awkwardly, her voice croaked.
Lucy stared at her for a while, then replied,
"It doesn't work that way, Sarah. I'm not yet strong enough to make far portal jumps."
Realizing how much trouble she had already caused, she knew she needed to get back to the city.
Her mind wasn't at rest. Who knew what was lurking in the darkness out here?
"Well, you got us here. Maybe if you concentrate, you might be able to get us out and..."
Sarah paused. They had heard something, not just something, but someone.
Lucy heard it too, since she stood aghast.
It was a scream.
A loud, "AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!"
They didn't know who it was, and fear now crept into them. The darkness around seemed to be stretching out for them.
But it was Simma.
"C'mon, let's go check it out. I think someone is getting hurt," Lucy muttered, her voice very low, lower than a whisper.
Not even waiting for Sarah to reply, she moved away hurriedly.
"Wait, Lucy… wait up!" Sarah called, hurrying behind her as well towards the sound, trying her best to keep her feet from making noise.
They moved closer until they could see the figures, poorly lit up by the headlight of one of the bikes that was on the ground.
Lucy and Sarah froze. They had never seen anything like it. Shivers seared down their spines.
Holding Simma by the neck was the fanged-out Singrith.
His canine was extra-large as it drooled. Its irises blared red. Its nails were pointed, dirty, and thick.
It had a crooked face that contained wrinkles too tangled to make the face look human, and on its face was something that looked like a mischievous smile.
Simma was choking. It was going to strangle him.
Simma had launched at him impulsively, angered, for he had killed Sonja.
But the Singrith had grabbed him by the neck mid-jump and was strangling him, hatred blaring from its eyes, as he repeated those words
"I told you I'd be there when you fall boy"
"We have to help him, Lucy," Sarah said to her.
"Are you insane?! How are we going to fight that thing?" Lucy replied, fear written all over her face.
"Well, I don't know… maybe we don't.
You can just steal him, like you stole me," Sarah suggested. Her feet were vibrating. She was also afraid.
"... Alright... Look, I'm going to try and make a portal that will send us back to the citadel, and you will fetch him," Lucy said to Sarah.
"Me? Why not you fetch him?" Sarah replied.
She was very much scared just looking at that thing, talk less of getting closer to it.
"Well, I would have, but then who would make the portal?" Lucy said
"Fine," Sarah gave in, as she picked up a twig from the floor and turned it into a sword.
"Portal me out there," she said, muttering up some confidence.
"That's my girl," Lucy sneered as she made a portal and Sarah jumped into it.
Focusing behind the Singrith, she made another portal as Sarah jumped out of it, sword raised and face stern, and with powerful strength...
Plounge!
She drove it into the Singrith's stomach.
The Singrith felt the pain and dropped Simma.
It growled angrily, and Sarah got more scared. She had seen it now very clearly, and it sent shivers over her.
She was sure that thing was going to haunt her dreams for eternity.
"Lucy, now!" Sarah yelled, finding her voice at last.
Lucy made another portal and swept it across, taking Sarah and Simma with a swift sweep through the air.
They appeared where she was.
She was now focusing on making the portal that would take them to the Citadel.
But the Singrith had driven out the sword from its stomach and was now walking toward them. snarling angrily.
"…Anytime now, Lucy," Sarah said.
She was now sweating badly.
The fact that that thing didn't die after the way she had driven the sword through its stomach was enough to make her shit herself.
The Singrith was now drawing closer and closer.
Lucy was spinning her hand in the air. She focused on the city, but only sparks were bursting in the air.
The Singrith was now a few inches away.
And then, the blue portal shimmered into existence.
It was bright and blinding, but heavenly in the eyes of Sarah, for that was their hope of living.
"I made it! … C'mon, quickly!"
And before the creature could get to them, they helped Simma, and the three of them jumped into the portal.
And with a final sound, the portal closed...
And they were long gone.
