The Boy Who Never Was - A Harry Potter Fanfic

Chapter 7: Five Finger Discount

The Granger family stepped into Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions, leaving me outside with Professor McGonagall.

The professor's gaze lingered on me, her sharp eyes glinting with curiosity and suspicion. She folded her hands neatly in front of her robes.

"Mr. Kingston, I've been meaning to ask about your past. Your... arrival was rather peculiar."

I rocked on my heels for a moment before responding.

"I don't remember much of it, Professor. The first thing I recall is waking up in a forest, completely alone and without any memory of who I was or how I got there."

McGonagall's eyes narrowed slightly, her lips pressing into a thin line.

"No memory at all? That's highly unusual, even in the wizarding world. Have you experienced any odd magical phenomena since that day?"

"Nothing out of the ordinary," I replied,

As if I would tell her that I could store things.

Why give away an advantage?

"Just a lot of confusion and trying to figure out what was going on."

"I see," she said thoughtfully, her tone neutral but her expression betraying a hint of doubt.

"Have you considered visiting St. Mungo's?"

I blinked. "St. Mungo's?"

"It's our primary magical hospital," McGonagall explained.

"They specialize in all manner of magical maladies and peculiar conditions. If there's any chance of recovering your memories, they would be able to assist."

I nodded slowly.

"That sounds like a good place to start. But it's been a strange journey getting here, Professor. From the forest, to the police station. to Wool's Orphanage.."

At the mention of Wool's Orphanage, a flicker of something crossed McGonagall's face—recognition, perhaps, or unease.

It vanished as quickly as it appeared but I know I saw it despite her expression returning to its usual impassivity.

I continued, "Things didn't exactly go smoothly there. Odd things kept disappearing… the kind of things that made people suspect me to be a thief but there was no evidence of it ever happening. They eventually kicked me out and I made my way back to the police station again. From there, I stayed in the impound facility for a night before being sent to the Grangers."

McGonagall's lips pursed. "Your circumstances are… unconventional. I'll admit, we had some difficulty locating you. Your address kept changing, and our owls can only track someone so well when they're constantly on the move. It wasn't until you settled with the Grangers that your letter finally reached you. As for the random missing things that happened around you, I can only attribute it to accidental magic. You probably kept banishing things without realizing it."

I gave her a deadpan look.

"The school bus went missing."

She gave me an incredulous look.

Before she could respond, the Granger family emerged from the shop, Hermione clutching her new robes with an excited smile.

"Your turn, Sky," she said brightly.

I just smiled and walked past them as I headed inside.

As I stepped inside Madam Malkin's, a cheerful witch with a measuring tape bustled over to assist me. "What can I get for you, dear?"

"I'd like a set of sturdy, self-cleaning robes that will last me until graduation," I began.

She stared writing things down on a parchment.

"I assume Hogwarts?"

"Yep!!" I responded with a cheerful smile before an idea hit me.

"I'll also need a set of dress robes with the same functions. Additionally, I'd like black jeans, white polo shirts, socks, a vest, white T-shirts, khaki shorts, and a green short-sleeve button-up shirt to wear over it. All self-sizing, flexible, and made of breathable fabric."

The witch blinked, her quill poised over a parchment as she scribbled down my request.

"That's quite an order. It'll take us two to three days to have everything ready."

"Three days is fine," I said, pulling out a small pouch of coins.

"How much?"

"Thirteen Galleons, seven Sickles, and twelve Knut's," she replied.

I counted out the exact amount, handed it over, and thanked her.

"Please step over here as I take your measurements," she said as she motioned me to a stepping stool.

The measuring tape acted as if it had a life of its own as it started measuring me.

"Would you be so kind as to write my measurements down separately for me?"

"Of course, May I please have a name for this order?"

"My name is Sky Kingston."

"Alright Mr. Kingston, that should be no issue at all." She replied with a wide smile.

After all the measurement's were done we walked back over to the counter to get my ticket for the clothes.

"How long do the enchantments on the robes last for?" I asked out of curiosity.

"The self fitting charms can last a person's lifetime. It is a very convenient piece of magic."

"I see, thank you very much for all your assistance." I said with a genial wave as I headed out.

Next, we made our way to Magical cases, bags, and trunks for all occasion.

Inside, rows of trunks lined the walls, ranging from simple designs to elaborate ones enchanted with various features while there were bags ranging from simple leather pouches and rucksacks to briefcases and purses.

This got my inner storage junkie side going.

As everyone was looking around, I noticed a couple briefcases, that were labeled as apartment trunks.

There were over a 30 or 40 lined up against the wall.

With prices like those, I don't blame them for not being sold.

Hermione quickly selected a standard trunk while I picked up an apartment trunks and pretended to pick it from one of the non magical ones sold next to it.

They really need to organize their inventory better.

"Mr. Kingston, are you sure that briefcase is large enough? I suggest getting a storage trunk like the one Ms. Granger picked out."

I pretended to look around and picked out a simple brown leather trunk and brought it over.

"Ill take both then. The briefcase would be great to carry all my books in. It could save me a trip for in between classes."

Hermione seeing the practicality in this also ran over to a Periwinkle bag with extension charms on it and proceeded to add it onto her things to buy.

Once our purchases were complete, I let out a sigh of relief.

The man didn't even check closely at the briefcase.

He just assumed I was getting a featherlight Briefcase with an extension charm for 10 Galleons!!

I now own 4 apartment trunks....

Well, I guess that's it.

On our way to our next destination I turned to Professor McGonagall.

"Professor, how much does tuition cost?"

This question had gotten me curious for a while.

Her lips twitched in what might have been a smile.

"Tuition at Hogwarts is covered by the Ministry for orphaned or financially disadvantaged students. Your supplies, however, are usually taken out of the school fund as a form of loan. You would have been expected to pay back what you can as soon as you gain employment. In your case, since you paid with your own funds, You would not be expected to do so."

Relieved, I nodded. "That's good to know."

We proceeded to the apothecary, where Hermione and I picked up basic potion ingredients.

As everyone once again went their separate ways to browse, I also went to do a bit of browsing. *cough cough*

I just went around and started storing things.

because of my lack of suspicious movement, I just went to each ingredient and without touching them, I stored a couple pinches here and there.

a couple of various roots, a different assortment of plants, a variety of potions in a vial.

in the corner, I noticed a couple of large cauldrons willed with an assortment of different potions fully brewed just waiting to be stored.

I opened my inventory from within the cauldron and stored a small cup of each inside my inventory.

I wonder what kind of potions they are?

meh, I'll figure it out later.

As we continued to "shop" we all gathered at the front register and started to proceed with out purchases.

We then made our way to Olivander's for our wands.

This was an exciting moment for both of us.

Initially we were supposed to get our books first but the Granger Parents made it clear that books would be the very last thing they would get.

"If we were to get the books first, it would also be considered the very last place we would visit. Just the sheer amount of effort it would take to get her away from them would take hours." Joked Dan.

Hermione huffed at that statement.

The moment we stepped into the shop, a soft tinkling bell announced our arrival.

An elderly man with wild, silvery hair appeared from behind a shelf, his pale eyes gleaming with curiosity.

"Ah, new students," he said softly. "I've been expecting you."
