Chapter 12: Chapter 12: A Deadly Pursuit
The forest felt alive with danger, the faint whistle cutting through the air like a predator's warning. Li Feng's pulse raced as he followed Mei Lian through the underbrush, her movements quick and purposeful. The jade ring at his chest seemed to pulse faintly, as though sensing the growing threat.
"Faster, Feng," Mei Lian hissed, glancing over her shoulder. Her eyes were sharp, her voice low. "They're closing in."
He nodded, biting back a reply. His legs burned from exertion, and every breath felt heavier than the last. The forest around them blurred into a mass of shadows and flickering light as they weaved through trees and leaped over roots.
Behind them, the sound of boots crunching leaves grew louder. The Scarlet Iron Sect's hunting party was relentless, their voices echoing through the trees.
"They're splitting up," Mei Lian muttered, her tone grim. "Smart bastards."
"How do we lose them?" Li Feng asked, his voice strained.
Mei Lian smirked, a glint of mischief flashing in her eyes. "With a little creativity."
She stopped abruptly, crouching near a patch of dense underbrush. Li Feng nearly collided with her but managed to steady himself. Mei Lian reached into her pouch, pulling out a small vial filled with a dark, viscous liquid.
"What is that?" he asked, watching as she poured the contents onto a pile of leaves.
"A distraction," she said simply, striking a flint to ignite the mixture. The leaves caught fire, the flames quickly growing and sending a plume of thick, acrid smoke into the air.
"Go," she said, pulling him to his feet. "This'll buy us some time."
They moved again, the smoke rising behind them. Shouts of confusion erupted from the pursuing soldiers as the fire spread, its crackling flames masking their retreat. Mei Lian led them down a narrow path that twisted and turned, each step taking them deeper into the forest.
But the reprieve was short-lived. The sharp twang of a bowstring broke the air, and an arrow thudded into a tree just inches from Li Feng's head.
"They're faster than I thought," Mei Lian muttered, her grip tightening on her dagger. "Keep moving!"
Li Feng's heart pounded as they ran, the sound of pursuit growing louder once more. He felt the weight of the jade ring against his chest, its faint hum resonating with his heartbeat. Desperation clawed at him as he struggled to keep up with Mei Lian's relentless pace.
"Here!" Mei Lian called, veering sharply to the left. She led them to a dense thicket, its branches forming a natural barrier. They slipped through, crouching low as the voices of the soldiers grew closer.
Li Feng held his breath, his hands trembling as he gripped the makeshift staff he'd fashioned from a sturdy branch. Mei Lian's eyes flicked toward him, her expression calm but firm.
"Stay quiet," she whispered. "And be ready."
The first soldier appeared moments later, his crimson armor gleaming faintly in the dim light. He moved cautiously, his sword drawn as he scanned the area. Mei Lian waited until he was close before springing into action. Her dagger flashed, the blade catching the man's neck with deadly precision.
Li Feng's stomach churned, but he forced himself to stay focused. A second soldier emerged, his eyes widening as he spotted Mei Lian. Li Feng didn't think—he swung his staff with all his strength, the wood connecting with the man's arm and sending him stumbling.
"Not bad," Mei Lian said, dispatching the soldier with a quick strike. "But don't hesitate next time. Hesitation will get you killed."
Before Li Feng could respond, another shout rang out, followed by the sound of approaching footsteps. Mei Lian grabbed his arm, pulling him deeper into the thicket.
"We can't fight them all," she said, her voice tense. "We need to lose them."
The forest opened up into a narrow ravine, its rocky walls steep and treacherous. Mei Lian paused, her eyes scanning the terrain. "This way," she said, pointing to a series of jagged rocks that formed a crude path down.
Li Feng hesitated, his gaze flicking to the sheer drop below. "Are you sure?"
"No," Mei Lian admitted, a wry smile tugging at her lips. "But it's better than staying here."
She moved first, her steps careful but swift as she descended the rocky path. Li Feng followed, his heart pounding as he struggled to maintain his balance. The sound of pursuit echoed above them, the soldiers shouting orders as they closed in.
Halfway down, the jade ring pulsed again, its energy coursing through Li Feng's body. He stumbled, catching himself on a jagged rock. Mei Lian turned, her expression sharp. "Feng, focus!"
"I'm trying," he said through gritted teeth, his fingers gripping the rock tightly.
They reached the bottom of the ravine just as the first soldier appeared at the edge above. Mei Lian grabbed a handful of loose rocks and hurled them upward, the debris striking the man and sending him stumbling back. She turned to Li Feng, her expression urgent.
"Move!" she shouted, pushing him toward the cover of a nearby cave.
The two of them slipped inside, the darkness swallowing them whole. They crouched low, their breaths ragged as they listened for the sound of pursuit. The soldiers' voices echoed faintly above, but they seemed hesitant to follow.
After a long moment, Mei Lian exhaled, her shoulders relaxing slightly. "That was close."
Li Feng nodded, his heart still racing. "What now?"
She glanced at him, a faint smile playing at her lips. "Now we figure out how to stay alive long enough to make this all worth it."
The tension in her voice was unmistakable, but there was also a spark of determination. As they sat in the darkness of the cave, Li Feng felt a flicker of hope. They were far from safe, but for the first time, he began to believe that they might just have a chance.
