The Court Strategist: Kenji Fukui’s Rise

Chapter 7: The Turning Point

The gym buzzed with energy, spectators leaning forward in anticipation as Karasuno and Aoba Johsai squared off. The stakes were high—this match wasn't just about advancing but proving themselves against one of the most formidable teams in the prefecture.

Kenji Fukui sat on the bench, his eyes glued to the court. This wasn't his first match as a substitute, but the intensity was overwhelming. Aoba Johsai's captain, Oikawa Tooru, had already proven why he was considered one of the best setters in the region. His serves were precise, his sets deceptive, and his court presence commanding.

The whistle blew, and the first set began.

Aoba Johsai claimed the early momentum. Oikawa's pinpoint serves pushed Karasuno on the defensive, forcing Nishinoya to dive and dig at impossible angles.

"Up!" Nishinoya shouted, managing to send the ball high.

Kageyama quickly got under it, setting for Tanaka, who came charging from the left.

"Give it to me!" Tanaka roared, leaping high and smashing the ball with raw power.

But Aoba Johsai's blockers were ready. The ball ricocheted off Iwaizumi's hands, bouncing back into Karasuno's court.

Kenji winced. Even from the bench, he could see how calculated Aoba Johsai's moves were. Oikawa's ability to read the flow of the game and adjust his plays was astonishing.

The next rally unfolded at a blistering pace. Karasuno scrambled to keep up as Oikawa set the ball to Iwaizumi again. This time, the spike was aimed at a sharp angle, slipping just past Hinata and Kageyama's block attempt.

"Focus!" Daichi shouted as he collected his team.

Despite Karasuno's best efforts, the gap widened. Hinata's quicks with Kageyama were effective, but Oikawa countered by tightening their defense, forcing Karasuno to rely on other strategies.

Tanaka stepped up, his fiery energy leading the charge. He powered through several spikes, earning Karasuno much-needed points, but the pressure was immense.

"Don't let them dictate the game!" Daichi urged.

Kenji watched intently, analyzing Oikawa's patterns. 'He's targeting our left side. He's avoiding Nishinoya.'

But even as Kenji observed, he knew it was easier said than done to counter such a versatile team.

By the end of the first set, Karasuno had been worn down, losing 25-18.

Kenji wiped his palms on his shorts as Daichi gave a pep talk during the break.

"We're not out of this," Daichi said, his voice steady. "Focus on what we do best. Trust each other."

The second set started with a renewed energy from Karasuno.

The first rally was intense, with both teams trading powerful attacks. Nishinoya made an incredible dig on Oikawa's serve, sending the ball spinning high.

Kageyama set it for Tanaka, who roared as he smashed it down the line. The blockers reacted too late, and the ball thudded onto Aoba Johsai's court.

"Nice kill, Tanaka!" Daichi shouted, pumping his fist.

Kenji couldn't help but admire Tanaka's confidence and execution. As Karasuno's outside hitter, he carried a significant burden, and yet he rose to the challenge every time.

The next few rallies were just as fierce. Hinata's speed and Kageyama's precision allowed Karasuno to execute their signature quicks, keeping Aoba Johsai on their toes.

At 10-9, Aoba Johsai held a narrow lead. Kenji's moment came when Daichi subbed him in for Asahi.

"Kenji, stick close to Tanaka. Follow his lead," Daichi said, clapping him on the shoulder.

Kenji nodded, his nerves jangling as he stepped onto the court.

The next rally began with Nishinoya perfectly receiving Oikawa's jump serve. The ball soared toward Kageyama, who scanned the court and set for Kenji.

Kenji leapt, his hand arcing back. For a split second, the world seemed to freeze. Then, he swung, connecting with the ball and sending it hurtling toward Aoba Johsai's side.

Their libero dove, barely managing to keep it alive.

"Cover it!" Tanaka shouted, positioning himself for the next attack.

The ball came back over the net, and Tanaka jumped high, smashing it into the blockers. This time, the ball deflected off their hands and went out of bounds.

"Point, Karasuno!" the referee called.

Kenji exhaled, his heartbeat hammering.

"Not bad, Fukui," Tanaka said with a grin. "But don't get too comfortable. This game's just heating up."

As the set continued, Kenji found his rhythm. He wasn't as explosive or confident as Tanaka, but he managed to contribute with solid defense and a few well-placed hits.

Aoba Johsai fought back hard, but Karasuno's teamwork shone.

One particularly intense rally saw Kenji making a critical save, diving to keep the ball in play after Oikawa's feint caught them off guard. Kageyama quickly set the ball to Hinata, who smashed it past their blockers for the point.

"Great save, Kenji!" Daichi called, clapping his hands.

Kenji nodded, his confidence growing with each play.

With the score tied at 24-24, the tension was suffocating. Both teams knew the next few points would decide the set.

Oikawa's serve was lethal, but Nishinoya once again rose to the challenge, digging it perfectly.

Kageyama set the ball high, this time for Tanaka.

"Let's end this!" Tanaka yelled as he soared into the air.

His spike was a blur, blasting through Aoba Johsai's blockers and landing just inside the baseline.

The crowd erupted as Karasuno claimed the set 26-24, forcing a third and final set.

As the players gathered on their sides, preparing for the deciding set, Kenji noticed Oikawa glancing toward him.

The smirk on Aoba Johsai's captain's face sent a chill down Kenji's spine.

"Something's coming," Kenji muttered under his breath.

The whistle blew, and the third set began with an explosive serve from Oikawa. The ball spun sharply, grazing the net and plunging downward. Nishinoya dove, barely managing to keep it alive. Kageyama scrambled, setting the ball to Kenji.

Kenji swung, his heart pounding as the ball flew over the net. But Aoba Johsai was ready. Iwaizumi leapt, smashing the ball back with a devastating block. The ball hit the floor, and Aoba Johsai claimed the first point of the third set.

Kenji clenched his fists, determination burning in his chest.

"This isn't over," he whispered, his eyes locked on Oikawa.
