The Cursed Orbit: fragment of Fate

Chapter 5: Echoes of the Past

The journey to Nagano was one of constant motion and unwavering silence. The trio—Haruto, Rei, and Aiko—kept moving, as if every step forward was a fragile thread that could snap at any moment. The world around them was a twisted reflection of its former self, a harsh and unforgiving landscape where beauty had been replaced by desolation.

The sun rarely made an appearance through the ever-present ash clouds that hung heavy in the sky, casting everything in an eerie half-light. The air was thick, and the wind carried the scent of something ancient and lost. Even now, Haruto couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching them, something far beyond the Moon Cursed.

They had been traveling for days, and despite Rei's unwavering determination, the toll of the journey was beginning to show. Aiko, too, had grown quieter, as though the world was slowly eroding her spirit. The weight of everything—the loss of loved ones, the constant fight for survival—was bearing down on them all.

But there was no time to stop. There was no time for reflection, for mourning. Every moment spent idle was a moment closer to death.

The Sanctuary

On the fourth day of their journey, the mountains of Nagano finally came into view. The towering peaks loomed above them like the jagged teeth of a beast, their snow-covered caps stark against the ashen sky.

"We're close," Rei said, her eyes fixed on the mountains ahead. "The sanctuary is said to be hidden deep in the range. If it's real, it could be our only chance to survive—at least until we figure out what we're up against."

Haruto glanced at Aiko, who was trailing behind them, her small hands wrapped tightly around her pack. He could see the fear in her eyes, but she said nothing, following them without question.

It wasn't long before the terrain began to shift. The familiar asphalt gave way to rocky trails, and the dense forests of Nagano towered overhead. The silence here was oppressive, broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves or the distant howl of some creature lurking in the wilderness.

"Stay close," Rei said, her voice hard and commanding.

Haruto nodded, his senses alert. Every crack in the earth, every gust of wind set him on edge. It felt as though the mountains themselves were watching them, waiting for something to happen.

By nightfall, they reached a small clearing. Rei made a fire, and they sat together, the warmth of the flames a fleeting comfort against the growing chill.

"Rei," Aiko said suddenly, her voice breaking the silence. "Do you think we'll really find it? The sanctuary?"

Rei didn't answer immediately. She stared into the fire, her face illuminated by its flickering light. "I don't know," she said softly. "But it's our only hope right now."

Haruto could feel the weight of her words, the uncertainty that hung in the air. They had no idea what awaited them, but they had no choice but to keep moving forward.

A Strange Visitor

In the dead of night, as the wind howled through the trees and the fire sputtered, Haruto awoke to the sound of footsteps. He sprang to his feet, his hand instinctively going to his sword.

"Haruto?" Rei's voice was hushed, urgent.

"I heard something," he whispered back.

Aiko, who had been lying beside the fire, stirred awake, her eyes wide with fear.

"Is it... a Moon Cursed?" she asked, her voice trembling.

"I don't know," Haruto replied, his gaze fixed on the dark trees surrounding them. "But we need to be ready."

They stood in silence for a moment, the sounds of the night creeping in around them. Then, through the shadows, a figure emerged.

It was a man, tall and slender, his movements graceful and precise. He wore a long cloak, the fabric dark and tattered, as though it had seen many battles. His face was obscured by the hood of his cloak, but Haruto could see the glint of pale eyes under the shadow.

"Who are you?" Rei demanded, stepping forward.

The man didn't answer immediately. Instead, he tilted his head, as if studying them. "I've been watching you," he said finally, his voice low and melodic.

Haruto's grip on his sword tightened. "Watching us? Why?"

The man's eyes glimmered in the dim light of the fire. "You're the ones they've been waiting for."

Rei frowned. "Who are 'they'?"

The man didn't answer directly. Instead, he reached into his cloak and pulled out a small, ornate stone. It was carved with strange symbols that seemed to shift and change as Haruto stared at them.

"This," the man said, holding the stone up, "is the key to the sanctuary."

The Past Unveiled

Haruto, Rei, and Aiko stared at the man in stunned silence. The stone was unlike anything they had ever seen before—its surface gleamed with an otherworldly light that seemed to pulse with a rhythm of its own. It felt... wrong. But also incredibly powerful.

"Where did you get that?" Rei demanded, her voice tinged with suspicion.

The man smiled, a cold, knowing smile. "From the sanctuary. It is the key to entering the heart of the mountains—where you will find the answers you seek."

"What answers?" Haruto asked, his voice sharp.

The man's eyes darkened. "The answers to who—and what—you truly are."

Haruto felt a chill run down his spine. The man's words hung in the air, heavy with meaning. He wanted to ask more, but something in the man's expression told him that this was not the right time.

"We're just looking for a place to survive," Rei said, her voice firm. "We didn't ask for answers."

The man's smile faded, and for the first time, there was something almost sad in his expression. "Survival is a luxury no one can afford," he said quietly. "The world you knew is gone. It's not just the Moon that's broken. Everything is. You can't survive unless you understand the truth."

The fire crackled as the silence stretched between them. Finally, Haruto spoke. "You want us to follow you."

The man's pale eyes gleamed. "I'm not asking. I'm offering."

The Decision

Haruto exchanged a glance with Rei. She seemed uncertain, but there was a fire in her eyes that told him she was ready to take the risk. Aiko, on the other hand, appeared terrified, but Haruto could see the curiosity in her eyes.

"We don't have much choice," Haruto said, his voice steady. "If this stone really is the key, then we have to go."

Rei nodded reluctantly. "I agree. We don't know what awaits us, but we can't keep wandering aimlessly."

The man held the stone out to them. "Then let's go."

With that, the three of them followed him into the darkness, the firelight fading behind them as they moved deeper into the mountains, toward whatever awaited them.

---

The Path Forward

The journey was long and treacherous. The man led them through narrow mountain passes, across streams that ran red, and through forests where the trees seemed to whisper in languages they couldn't understand.

Haruto's senses were on high alert, every shadow a potential threat, every rustling leaf a warning. But the man moved as if he knew exactly where he was going, never pausing, never faltering.

As they traveled, the air grew colder, and the very landscape seemed to change. The mountains became steeper, the forests thicker, and the silence more oppressive.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, they reached a clearing. In the center was a massive stone door, ancient and covered in moss. The man stepped forward and placed the stone into a recess in the door, and with a deep rumble, the door slowly creaked open.

Beyond it was darkness—an endless, cavernous void that seemed to stretch on forever.

"This," the man said, turning to them, "is where the answers lie."

Haruto took a deep breath. Whatever awaited them, it was time to face it.
