Chapter 9: Leo
After more than three weeks, Ryan finally adapted to his life in the barrack. His life there was quite repetitive, just training and resting.
What quite a pity was that his relationship with his roommates was not that good, although it couldn't be said to be bad either.
What made it unbearable for him was that every time everyone gathered in one room, the room would descend into awkward silence. He tried to talk to them once, but the result was although they answered, it was just a short and precise word or they didn't know that the conversation couldn't continue. In the end he gave up.
Maybe it was because they were informed that they would only be roommates for a month, causing them not to consider bonding and making friends as important.
If only they were American, because he heard someone say that Americans were quite chatty compared to others.
At this time, Ryan was sitting in the shade, beside him was Leo. He was a local of Brightsnow City, a good friend he made after mingling in the quarter for almost a month.
"Hey Leo!" Ryan suddenly said, "Do you think you can pass the assessment tomorrow?"
"Of course." Leo said with great certainty.
"So confident?" Ryan was a bit surprised hearing his answer.
"No matter what we do, we must have confidence first, only then will there be a chance of success." Leo said profoundly, "If you are not even confident before doing it, how will you even succeed? Through luck? Then your luck must be so tough."
"Hahaha." Ryan laughed hearing Leo answer.
"I guess you're right. Only when you have confidence, there is a chance to succeed." Ryan echoed.
But Ryan knew that building confidence was not easy, only those with sufficient preparation are confident otherwise it would be those with overconfident personality would have it.
"Hey, do you perhaps have insider information?" Ryan suddenly asked.
"Tch, so what if I have and so what if I don? It would not matter even if you knew the content of the test."
"What?" You really knew?" Ryan was surprised, he only asked it in a joking manner and didn't know he would hit the jackpot.
"Even if I tell you, it would still be useless." Leo said, "Unless you knew it a long time before the assessment was conducted. One day's preparation was not enough, it could even backfire if you decide to do a last minute cram up. You better just prepare normally."
"I also just got the information yesterday and paid a great cost for it, only for it to be useless." He complained. "Even then, I was not allowed to share it with anyone."
"If only it was allowed, I would also sell it to others at a high price." Leo said, annoyed. "If I didn't fear those mages would employ their magic to detect whether I leaked it or not and made me disqualified, I would tell you ages ago."
"Even though the information was useless in the test, it still gave me assurance."
"I already tried my best in the open and in the dark, if I fail tomorrow it just means that I was not fated." He said quietly, his earlier confidence seems to be gone.
"But we must face everything with confidence, trying your best is what matters. If it fails then it just doesn't mean to be."
Ryan looked at Leo. His mature demeanor was what made them quickly become close.
"Okay, I will do as best as I can and pray…"
"Don't!" Leo cut off Ryan, "Don't you remember what I said before."
"Oh, look at me, how could I forget." Ryan said.
For the last month, he almost dedicated his time except for training and resting to gather information. His goal was to at least know the common sense of this new world, and Leo had greatly helped him with that.
Leo was quite knowledgeable among his peers, and he also shared many things to him, even something that ordinary people don't seem to know.
Like not easily helping strangers, because we don't know who or what we are helping. Don't easily give others your personal belongings because it could be used to curse you. Don't walk in the dark at night, don't easily follow strangers, dll.
But what left the most impression on him was don't casually pray.
Praying!
Something that almost everyone in his previous world does in front of difficult problems. But in there praying couldn't be done casually, because we don't know what great deities are looking in our way.
In a world where deities really exist, praying to them means you became their follower. If some Devil was looking your way and hearing your prayers, It wouldn't be called Devil if It didn't grant your prayers in exchange for your soul. But the most terrifying was when those Devil granted your wishes in a twisted way and still want your soul.
So, praying couldn't be done casually, unless you named a specific deity in it, causing those who are not addressed couldn't grant your prayers.
"Let's go, those people are already finished." Leo said as he walked towards the Well in front of the quarter.
Because there were only male in the quarter, there was only a huge well in front of the quarter used for showering and washing clothes. It was usually crowded just after training, so he and Leo purposely waited until everyone finished their showering before taking a shower.
Ryan scooped a bucket of water from the well. Looking at his reflection in the water, he was still filled with disbelief.
A silvery white hair that gave him a noble feeling, a chiseled face with a high nose and pointy chin. A pair of black and deep eyes perfectly completed his features.
If he was in his previous world, he could make a living with just this face alone. Even if couldn't become a famous artist or influencer, it was enough to sustain his life. If all else fails, he could just search for wealthy women to rely on, eating soft rice was also not a bad option.
Unfortunately, appearance alone was useless in this world, only power matters.
Speaking about power, his strength had been rising steadily in the past month. Although his strength had risen, it caused him to worry instead.
First of all, he didn't know if the rising strength had a drawback or side effects. The second was his abnormalities would cause the higher up to suspect something, if it was just suspicions it would be good, but if they immediately take action, he didn't know what his outcome would be, would it become another experimental subject or even specimen for research? Thinking about it made him shudder.
So, except for training allocated from the barrack, he also trained to control his strength. Luckily the increase in his strength was a gradual process and not an abrupt increase, making it easier to control.
He just didn't know whether his abnormal strength would be noticed tomorrow. Hopefully there would be no accident.
