Chapter 5: A way
The Math Lab
There were four people in the math lab. I was there with Vivian Halim, Albert, and Ms. Netty, discussing and practicing math olympiad problems.
We sat facing each other.
Ms. Netty sat across from me.
Next to Ms. Netty, Vivian Halim sat across from Albert.
Earlier, when I was thrown back to the present, Albert was in the restroom.
He had diarrhea and asked the teacher on duty for permission to go home. That's why I didn't find Albert in his seat behind Vivian Halim.
The three of us were still practicing for the math olympiad.
Vivian Halim was the first to finish her problems, then I finished two minutes later. Albert finished last, fifteen minutes after me.
Ms. Netty reviewed our answers. She wore glasses and pointed out our mistakes.
I stared at Vivian Halim and kept thinking about how to complete my mission of touching her butt.
I barely had any chances, and I only had five days left.
First, Vivian was somewhat distant from me. Maybe it was because she hated losing and saw me as her opponent or rival.
It was the same in the future, as I remembered. I rarely talked to this girl who loved competition.
I had beaten her a few times, which probably made her keep her distance from me.
In our first year, I was the top student from the beginning to the end of the year, leaving her in second place.
It wasn't a great impression, but I didn't care much. So, for three years, we barely talked.
Second, it was hard to get into Vivian's social circle.
She rarely hung out with people like me.
She was friendly, but she only had three close friends: Ivanka Jaya, Anna, and Bella.
Interrupting my intense focus, Vivian Halim suddenly got up from her chair, walked slowly to the corner of the room where the water dispenser was, and poured herself a glass of water.
I watched her from behind.
"She has a great body," I thought.
I smiled when our eyes met as she turned back with a cup of water.
But her expression was blank. She didn't return my smile.
"She really hates me," I thought.
"Hey Vivi, is your driver picking you up?" Albert asked.
Vivian Halim looked at Albert with narrowed eyes.
"Why do you ask?"
Albert was a bit scared.
"Your eyes look scary when you squint," he said quietly.
Vivian Halim looked away and shook her head.
"No. My driver is busy," she said curtly.
"How..." Albert started, but Vivian Halim cut him off.
"Don't even think about walking home with you, Albert," she said.
Albert was shocked and looked down. He looked funny.
"What a hope-crusher," I thought.
In the past, Vivian Halim had a thing with Albert. He was one of her admirers.
Albert was handsome, 5'7", had tan skin, and was popular in the school.
He was active in school clubs. He was the head of the basketball club.
He won a high school national basketball tournament in his first year, was the third-best student in his first year, and was a drug prevention ambassador.
They dated for two months in their third year. I don't know what happened, but I heard Vivian Halim dumped him.
"I've finished checking your answers," Ms. Netty said. "Some of you need to study harder."
We looked at her.
"Albert, your score is the lowest, 80. Vivian, you got 95. And Aditya, you got 100."
Albert smiled, but Vivian looked surprised.
She glared at me as if to say, "How did this idiot get a perfect score?"
"Ms. Netty, are you sure?"
Ms. Netty nodded.
"Vivi, you were tricked by some of the questions. You missed five questions."
She showed Vivian Halim her mistakes.
Vivian Halim looked down.
The girl finally realized her mistakes in working on the math problems earlier. So, she didn't want to argue with Mrs. Netty anymore.
"Have you exchanged contact information?" Ms. Netty asked.
"Why?" Albert asked.
"You need to communicate better," Ms. Netty said. "It will help you in the competition."
"Especially since some of you don't know each other well," she said, glancing at Vivian Halim and me.
"Ms. Netty, it's not important. I already have Albert's contact," Vivian Halim said.
Ms. Netty shook her head.
"What about Aditya?"
Vivian Halim was silent.
"You need to communicate," Ms. Netty said. "I'll give you two hundred questions to do this week."
She looked at Vivian Halim.
"I don't know why Aditya's math grades have been low, but he's the best right now. You can learn from him."
Vivian looked even more annoyed.
"Aditya, you're the group leader," Ms. Netty said. "Study together here after school. I'll be away for two days. Do you guys understand?"
Albert and I nodded, but Vivian Halim was still upset.
"Exchange contact information now," Ms. Netty said.
Vivian Halim reluctantly gave me her number.
"Finally, a way in," I thought.
"You can go home now," Ms. Netty said.
We walked out of the lab.
Vivian Halim walked quickly, and Albert followed her. Albert followed him like a dog following its master.
Right at the school's entrance gate, a motorcycle rider stopped Vivian Halim and Albert.
The rider wore the same uniform as ours. She wore a skirt similar to Vivian Halim's, but underneath it, she had on long training pants.
The girl took off her helmet and smiled at Vivian Halim. It was Bella. The girl who had threatened me before.
"I was so bored waiting for you, Vivi," she complained, handing over another helmet that was on the motorcycle's gas tank.
Vivian Halim simply smiled. "That's why I told you earlier that you should go home first and then pick me up."
The girl's expression changed when she saw me standing about five meters away from the three of them.
"Hey, it looks like he's stalking you, Vivi."
Vivian Halim turned to look at me; I just gave her a small smile.
"Just ignore him."
Vivian Halim immediately took the helmet that Bella offered and put it on. She got on the back of Bella's motorcycle.
"In that case, we'll go ahead, Albert."
Albert could only look down dejectedly as his master left him behind.
