The Era of Gods

Chapter 591 - 591 Inside the Sun Temple

Chapter 591: Chapter 591 Inside the Sun Temple

Normal means couldn’t fully erase the spiritual Branding left by these powerful creatures’ organs. Coupled with the interspecies rejection reactions of powerful creature organs and so on, the higher one went, the fewer elite Professionals there were.

Professionals like Lin Xiao, who ranked in the second sequence, were rare not only among the Descenders of all races but also among the Natives of this world—each one was a top-tier power capable of changing the world’s situation.

Warriors like Lin Xiao, whose Strength could already alter the reality of the material plane, were able to partake in battles with beings like the True Gods.

Although still Cannon Fodder in the eyes of the True Gods, at least they could participate.

Of course, Lin Xiao wouldn’t rush in to be Cannon Fodder, but scavenging the Sun Temple on the material plane was no problem at all. At this moment, the God of the Sun was utterly overwhelmed and certainly had no time to bother with him.

The monsters twisted from ordinary humans couldn’t stop the onslaught of numerous Professionals, and were quickly killed. Even their corpses were dissolved into pus and vanished by a Descender using a special method.

But when they reached the main entrance of the Temple, standing on the steps were two monstrous Knights with thick Armor melded into proliferating flesh and blood. One of the gruesome-looking Knights elegantly drew his sword and pointed, still retaining the memories of his past even after his transformation.

His figure vanished in a flash, reappearing past the front line of shielded soldiers, his sword piercing through a Professional’s protective light screen and shearing off half of that Professional’s head.

Yet this Professional still wasn’t dead, but rather laughing maniacally as he reached out to press the sheared half of his head against the other, while numerous tiny meat sprouts extended from the edges of the two halves, intertwining and rejoining them together.

At the same time, his newly joined mouth opened to emit an invisible sound wave, causing the muscles in the Knight’s thick sword arm to vibrate violently, spreading backwards like ripples, with tiny fissures opening and quickly healing.

In that moment, another Professional released a green wind mixed with many tiny particles from his mouth, which rapidly expanded. The countless tiny particles also enlarged, turning into numerous peanut-sized insects with ferocious mouthparts.

The green wind swirled around the flesh Knight, and a multitude of the insects latched onto the Knight, incessantly chewing on his flesh.

The other flesh Knight retreated after a missed strike, raised his sword in front of him and muttered an incantation. The next second, dark mist sprayed out, covering his entire body, and the twisted flesh Knight was gifted a thick layer of dark mist Armor. He leaped with a bound, forcing several shielded soldiers apart and with a ‘bang’, the sound of a heavy collision rang out as the Knight and a Berserker were both sent flying.

Both got up in a manner defying the laws of physics, one with sword raised horizontally, the other with sword slashing vertically. A ‘clang’ resounded, followed by a series of minute explosion sounds as they clashed violently.

Compared to the dazzling array of abilities several Professionals used to dizzyingly control the flesh Knight on one side, the fight between the flesh Knight and a Berserker on the other was one of brutal, flesh-on-steel violence.

However, it didn’t take long for the flesh Knight on the left to become irritated with being controlled and burst forth, extending several tentacles as thick as arms from his body, flailing and striking.

“Stand back, let me handle this!”

A Professional with a right arm covered in tattoo-like patterns stretched out his fist and thrust forward. His arm rapidly swelled, transforming into a super-muscular tentacle over a meter in diameter and dozens of meters long. The palm at the tip opened to reveal sharp teeth that bit into the flesh Knight, and the thick fingers clenched to press the Knight into the maw.

With the bulging arm pulsating a few times, the flesh Knight was swiftly swallowed and vanished.

To the amazement of the onlookers, the man shrank his arm back to normal, even let out a burp, and Lin Xiao saw a tattoo pattern identical to the flesh Knight appear on his arm, with the flesh Knight seeming to still be slightly trembling.

As for the other flesh Knight, three Berserkers rushed at him and hacked him to death.

One on one, they were evenly matched; overwhelming force was inevitable with three against one.

After killing the two flesh Knights, one was swallowed, the other was dissected on the spot to remove the heart, from which a pulsing pink strip of flesh was carefully boxed up. Once Purified of the spiritual Branding of the flesh Knight, this item could be made into a Magic Potion material for the advancement of Professionals in close combat professions, presumably limited to sequence nine or eight advancements.

They then entered the long Sun Corridor inside the Temple, where several Knights and a horde of monsters, including one grotesquely twisted Divine Office Staff, guarded the place.

A dozen Professionals surged forth, deploying an assortment of methods to deal with them.

Like in a game, they smashed open the doors along the corridor one by one, clearing out all the monsters inside.

Orderly and unchallenged, they slaughtered their way to the central hall of the Temple without encountering anything that could withstand them.

Until they arrived in front of the grand cathedral at the center of the Sun Temple, where a very powerful monster stood in their way.

This six or seven-meter-tall powerful monster, still clutching a Knight’s spear despite being twisted and mutated, was assumed to be the Knight Commander of the Temple, leading a dozen flesh Knights at the cathedral’s main entrance.

“Stand by, I will use a sealing item to lock down the Leader; you guys clean up the flesh Knights on the sides first,” Li Ying decided after observation. He took out a black chain from his bosom and threw it in the air. As the chain flew, he also produced a jade bottle, pouring a light green liquid onto the chain; white smoke began pouring out of it. After emptying out all the liquid, the black chain turned into a shining silver one, darting through the air like a silver snake.

Spotting the oncoming silver snake, the flesh Knight Commander raised his spear and thrust, causing an invisible ripple to ‘bang’ open in the Void where the silver snake was.

“”

The silver serpent, seemingly provoked, flashed a silver glow just above the Knight Commander’s head before swiftly expanding and elongating into an incredibly long silver serpent that fell and coiled around the Blood-flesh Knight Commander.

No matter how the Knight Commander struggled, the silver serpent continued to constrict, quickly binding him.

Upon seeing this, Li Ying felt a huge relief and loudly said to the others:

“We only have two minutes, or the Knight Commander will break free.”

A professional pulled out a crystal emitting a freezing chill and threw it into the horde. The crystal exploded, and a piercing cold burst forth, freezing a large number of the Blood-flesh Knights in place. Everyone unleashed their full array of abilities in a torrent of attacks, quickly killing most of the Blood-flesh Knights. By the time the Blood-flesh Knight Commander broke free, only five of his subordinates were still alive.

The freed Blood-flesh Knight Commander paused with his long spear, then vanished in the blink of an eye. The air in the center of the crowd expanded rapidly, and the Knight Commander appeared out of nowhere, his formidable pressure knocking them aside, as he stabbed Li Ying with a spear.

“Buzz!”

A transparent force field appeared in front of Li Ying, halting the long spear. He quickly drew out a golden scepter entwined with twin serpents, and the Blood-flesh Knight’s expression changed as he vanished once more.

“Pfft!”

The long spear pierced out of nowhere through a Berserker’s chest. A wisp of black mist flew out from the spear and burrowed into the Berserker’s body, rapidly devouring his blood-flesh essence. A sturdy warrior turned into a dried corpse in the blink of an eye, and with a shake of the spear, he crumbled to dust.

“What a bizarre technique!”

In terms of strength, the many professionals present could have overwhelmed the Blood-flesh Knight Commander, but his nearly untraceable flickering was too much of a bug. No one was strong enough to pin him down, and all eyes turned to Li Ying.

Li Ying did not hesitate to summon the silver serpent again, but this time its strength was far inferior to before. Before the silver serpent could loop and fall, the Blood-flesh Knight Commander escaped with a flicker, instantly killing another Berserker on the spot.

The Blood-flesh Knight Commander’s strength was likely at the fifth tier of the sequence. Li Ying, holding the golden serpent scepter, was the only one present who could surely defeat him, not even Li Mei, who was only at the sixth tier.

However, the greatest purpose of the golden serpent scepter in Li Ying’s hand was not to deal with this Knight Commander but rather to confront other existences within the Temple. If he exhausted too much power now, he would be unable to face the stronger creatures in the Temple later.

Thus, he turned his gaze to Lin Xiao, calling out with a hint of pleading:

“Lin Xiao, please lend us your aid. These powerful twisted creatures all have essences within them. Though they might not interest you, they can be traded for the things you need.”

Li Mei whispered to him:

“There’s a trading platform related to this world in the Main World. Essences like these from powerful twisted creatures are very valuable, second only to Law Fragments in worth, and can be traded for many precious items. Some Demigods might not need Law Fragments immediately and might trade small Law Fragments for high-quality twisted essences.”

“People are willing to trade Law Fragments for these?”

Lin Xiao’s interest was piqued, as Law Fragments were hard to come by, while these high-level twisted essences were not.

Li Mei nodded and said:

“To True God Level Powerhouses, naturally, Law Fragments are more valuable, but for us, attaining Godhood could be a matter of who knows how many years away—if it’s ever possible. So hoarding Law Fragments that may never be used isn’t as beneficial as trading for treasures that can immediately enhance one’s strength.”

“I see!”

Lin Xiao stepped forward just as the Knight Commander was about to devour a charger. The spear thrust into the charger froze, the black smog emerging from the spear was extinguished in an instant, and with a quick withdrawal and flicker, the Knight Commander reappeared dozens of meters away, staring at Lin Xiao. His body was slightly bent, maintaining a defensive stance.

The charger, narrowly escaping death, held his chest. Flesh sprouted rapidly at the wound, knitting together as if by thread, automatically healing itself.

At this moment, nobody paid attention to the wound; all eyes were on Lin Xiao as he walked forward, hands behind his back, while the once-unstoppable Blood-flesh Knight Commander now maintained a defensive posture as he retreated, radiating a spirit of fear from deep within his blood-flesh helmet.

Approaching the initial stand of the Blood-flesh Knight Commander, who now had no ground left to retreat to, conquered the fear in his heart and vanished with a flicker.

Everyone’s hearts tightened, and many instinctively whirled around to check behind themselves.

“Bang!”

“Wow!”

The Blood-flesh Knight Commander materialized above Lin Xiao, his spear striking the top of Lin Xiao’s head. It rebounded as if it had hit steel, and the black mist from the spear’s tip scattered upon impact.
