Chapter 10: Night Prefects
Headmaster Brenot vanished into the building as soon as he was done with his speech, leaving students visibly distressed. Left behind were three-night prefects who seemed amused. These were the top students of the 12th Grade—each representing the various factions in the academy.
Standing at the center of the group was the granddaughter of the infamous Brenot family—a pale girl with waist-length black hair in a goth dress.
Her all-black taste, which includes lipsticks and nail polish, matched her pale skin and enhanced her unusual beauty.
The Bernot family forced their way into Hollow Night five years ago after Leo's father left with his troops in pursuit of the remnants of the Thorne family.
Unlike the Thorne family, which was used to the peaceful life in the small town and was caught off guard when the war broke out, the Bernot family was a gang in Dallis, beaten and stripped of their territory in the city by a rival vampire gang.
Upon arriving in the town, they offered protection—something desperately needed at the time.
Luthor Morningstar's military exploits in the town were not limited to the Thorne family alone. He crippled the local supernatural groups born into the town, leaving it defenseless from rampaging vampires, werewolves and other supernatural beings.
That was why the Bernot family was able to secure a place here and integrate into society so well that one would suspect they had lived here all this while.
Currently, the Bernot family, which was made up of nearly 30 members, worked in different sectors in the town but mostly in the police.
This gives the family a sizable influence here.
Next to her was a bald 6'4'' bodybuilder on steroids, dressed in tight academy PE clothes. He was a part of the only werewolf family in Hollow Night—the Greyfurs.
His name was Gilbert Greyfur.
It was said three out of the five founders of this town were Greyfur. They were so rooted that even Luthor had to give up his hunt for the Greyfur and focus on the Thorne family.
The final night prefect was a dark-skinned youth with the DNA of a gorilla. Unlike Gilbert, who built his body into what it was, Ola was born a freak of nature.
Just at the age of 18, he was over 6 '7'' with a palm so massive it could wrap around Leo's face twice!
He was one of the brightest talents of the cult of Yaka in the town, and he was already a local basketball legend who many believe will make it big in this career path.
The eleventh witch coven had no foothold in the town, so they didn't have a night prefect representative here, but there were humans; why wasn't there a human night perfect?
"Follow me to your classroom." Alicia Bernot said in a soulless voice.
Even her gaze was unfocused, looking past everything and everyone.
"No introduction or words of encouragement. These things are cold-hearted." Azakar commented and Leo nodded in agreement.
The Bernot family was much more terrifying than the Thornes.
The group of barely 30 freshers followed the three-night prefects into the main building. They were led to the right wing of the first floor, where their classrooms and lockers were located.
Each locker had a number with a student's name imprinted on it. The Night prefects patiently waited for them to retrieve their keys from their respective lockers before leading them to their classroom door.
Alicia Bernot stopped in front of the classroom door and turned to the students. Once again, her gaze hovered over them as she addressed them.
"If you have a question, don't hesitate to approach any night prefect you come across. We will help resolve your misunderstanding as well as we can."
Saying this, Alicia was about to walk away with her colleagues when she noticed one hand raised. Her eyes squinted in discomfort upon noticing the familiar figure who raised his hand.
"Morningstar…" Alicia called plainly. "What is it?"
No one moved into this town without hearing stories of Leo's family exploits in the war. He was like a local celebrity everyone wanted to hurt but no one could touch.
"Night prefects represent the top students of all races in the academy. Why is there no human night perfect?"
Buzz!
Eyebrows knitted and eyes narrowed. Gasps escaped the lips of some students, and even the classroom door frantically slid open, and a lean man dressed in a rumpled suit barged out with a pale face.
There were questions people didn't ask in the academy and this was one of them
"Because Night prefects represent the best quality students the Academy has to offer. Unfortunately, humans lack the mental and physical capacity to compete with superior beings like us." Alicia didn't mince her words, nor did she show any emotion while speaking.
Hearing her words, humans lowered their heads in shame while students of other races giggled because this was the truth. Compared to vampires, werewolves, and cultists, humans truly lacked in so many aspects.
The old Leo would have been annoyed by this statement, but he just nodded in agreement. Truly, humans were lacking, and he learned that the hard way two days ago.
However, no one said humanity needed to be better than these monsters at everything. All they needed was one human who would stand out and change the narrative.
A human so special, he can boldly stand in place of all humanity.
And that person is Leo!
"In that case, I will be the first," Leo said, his voice brimming with confidence that made humans instinctively smile at his words.
He stood his ground, glaring deep into Alicia's eyes while both hands were shoved deep into his pockets.
Only now did Alicia's eyes tighten, her blank expression changing to one of discontent. Their eyes remained locked for what many considered the longest minute of the day, after which Alicia silently turned around and walked away without giving a response.
