Chapter 8: Susan Gills and Felix Thuggings
Bam! Bam!
Leo and Azakar flinched at the knocks, and they turned in its direction simultaneously.
"Please take a shower soon, Young Master Felix and Miss Susan will be here for your birthday party."
"It's your birthday? I must truly be blessed....."
"Shut it!" Leo snapped at the annoying lion spirit.
"Master Leo?"
"Sorry, I'm on a call... I'll take a shower as soon as I'm done!" Leo responded hastily, and his face reddened with embarrassment as he facepalmed.
Leo only let out a sigh of relief after he heard Anderson's retreating footsteps on the wooden staircase. He let out a heavy sigh as he walked over to his bed and fell on it.
He watched as Azakar ran in midair, floating in his direction, and he let out an exaggerated sigh.
"I sense you underestimate my worth," Azakar said in a stern tone while his little body floated over Leo's face.
"Oh wow, that's so special,"
Leo wore exaggerated expressions while he spoke with a dull voice. Even a monkey could tell he was mocking it, but Azakar took this as a compliment and puffed out his hairy chest.
"Because you admitted your mistake and apologized..."
"I never did." Leo chipped in.
"I will give you the secret to getting stronger faster." Azakar ignored Leo's interruption and continued his grand speech.
This time, Leo was interested. He sat up with an expectant look in his eyes as he waited eagerly for Azakar to continue. The little Lion smirked proudly, pleased that it had finally gained the attention of this ignorant human.
"You received a message claiming you need a hundred FP points to level up. Do you know what FP stands for?"
Azakar asked, and Leo nodded, but he wasn't in a hurry to answer. The tiny lion hovered in circles with a seasoned look on its face. If Leo couldn't see its stat, he would have mistaken this fraud for an ancient master with the knowledge of the world's secrets.
"Nope"
Azakar nodded as Leo shook his head. This human didn't look bright to start with, that must be why it was sent here to guide him.
"FP stands for Faith points." Azakar began. "The power of faith is the only source of strength for divine beings. It means the more popular and loved you are amongst the people, the stronger you get."
Leo nodded to its words while rubbing his chin.
"Like a celebrity kind of thing?" Leo asked.
"A symbol... Like Jesus Christ of Christianity and Prophet Mohammed of Islam... That kind of Symbol. Not fame, reverence." Azakar explained further.
The more impact he creates in the world and the more he gets recognized, the stronger he becomes. This made sense since he possessed the sin of pride; it wasn't the discreet type, and thankfully, Leo wasn't either.
Watching humans feel ashamed of themselves always broke his heart, but now he could stand tall as a human.
"I see..." Leo mumbled under his breath.
--- noon ---
As a seasoned bodybuilder and fighter, Leo's greatest advantage over his peers was his consistency. His ability to wake up and work out every morning paled in comparison to his ability to keep not more than two friends.
All his life, Leo had never made more than two friends.
Susan Gills was a blonde 15-year-old, who lived most of her life in the city and only moved to Hollow Night five years ago.
The Gill family owned the biggest car dealership business in Dallis. They only moved to the town because city vampires and witches were much more ruthless than local ones.
Small towns like Hollow Night only reported barely up to two deaths every week.
Susan was a horrible person, a girl with a princess mentality with only one redeeming trait—she was obsessed with Leo. She would gladly burn her father alive, it meant Leo would reciprocate her love.
Leo's second friend was Felix Thuggings—Yes, I know it's a stupid name. Felix was the definition of a countryside boy with a big heart and an innocent mind.
Felix was always strangely optimistic, regardless of the situation. He had a big heart that even the cold and indifferent Leo couldn't ignore.
Leo's feelings towards Felix were more of that of a man who had a son he wanted to protect. He wanted Felix to remain the innocent countryside boy who believed humanity would come out on top no matter how bad the situation was.
He was Leo's number-one fan and probably the only person he could confide in.
Leo was seated in the living room three-seater couch, dressed in a plain black shirt and joggers. He looked pissed off, so Anderson avoided him, not knowing there was a little Lion spirit hopping on his head.
The living room glass doors slid open and Anderson ran over to Leo's side with a cautious look.
"Lady Susan has arrived." He whispered into Leo's ear.
If it were in the past, Leo would probably bite his ear out of anger, but this time, he didn't. He remembered regretting not treating this old man better, so he was trying to be nice.
"Just her?" Leo blinked with a look of terror.
His face snapped toward the glass door, and Susan stood there with a wide grin.
"Happy birthday!"
'Fuck my life!' Leo cursed.
Susan was 5'7'' blonde with sky blue eyes and light face freckles. For a fifteen-year-old, she had her plump chest pressed against Leo's arm as she hugged his seated figure from the side.
She was dressed in a grey sweater with a large heart design, complimented by her short black jean skirt and shoes. Susan grabbed Leo's hands and rubbed her head on his chest.
Behind her was Susan's mother, Patricia—a blonde lady in her mid-fifties marked by wrinkles that made her hard to look at. It is said Susan's looks were from her father's side, and her mother's only redeeming quality was her quiet and polite nature.
She spoke, and when she spoke, they were only kind words. Regardless of her looks, she was impossible to dislike, and that was probably why Mr. Gills married her.
In the end, men always go where they find peace.
Patricia brought a cake with her, as she had done for the past few years. A polite smile plaid on her lips as she placed the cake on the glass center table.
"Happy birthday Leo. Stay blessed, my son." She smiled at him with a face only a mother could love.
Mrs. Patricia walked over to his side and patted his hair like a mother would do to her son. While Leo normally wouldn't allow this from anyone, Susan's mother has played a major role in his life since the death of his father.
"Thank you, ma'am," Leo responded with a polite nod.
"Happy birthday!" Susan smiled sheepishly as she tightened her hug. "Three years from now and we can get married."
Koff! Koff!
Leo coughed hard, while Mrs. Patricia chuckled lightly. The light mood was shattered by the sliding doors. A boy dressed in a plain white shirt and worn-out blue jeans walked in with a food flask and a proud smile.
Felix's plain face was further ruined by his sand-colored hair, which gave him a weird look. Leo repeatedly advised him to get a buzz cut, but all his pleadings had fallen on deaf ears.
While Susan was obsessed with him, Felix had always viewed Leo as a hero. He had known his friend for nearly a decade now, who seemed comfortable playing the supportive role.
Leo's eyes sparked with joy as he saw this as an opportunity to escape Susan's grip. He gently tugged her hands away before running over to Felix's side and taking the flask from him.
"You are a lifesaver!" Leo made mouth shapes but didn't say a word.
He quickly ran into the kitchen with the flask, leaving Felix behind in the living room.
Felix blinked, his brain a bit slow at processing what was going on.
"Good afternoon ma'am." He greeted Mrs. Patricia before turning to Susan and waving. "Hello."
Hmph!
Susan snorted disdainfully as she looked the other way, ignoring Felix's greeting.
"Ah! You have grown so much since we last met. Come over here, let me take a good look at you." Mrs. Patricia said with her signature calm, enthusiastic mood
….
Leo slid the flask cap open as soon as he entered the kitchen, greedily inhaling the aroma of the spaghetti and meatballs inside.
Felix's parents were normal countryside farmers. They lived simple lives, and his mother was the best cook Leo knew. One of the major reasons he always loved having Felix over was his mum's signature spaghetti and meatballs.
"Yes… I see… Okay."
Upon entering the kitchen, Leo stumbled upon Anderson making a call. He dropped the flask on the kitchen counter before he got a plate and fork from a shelf.
"Missing? We cannot be certain he is missing until 24hrs…"
Anderson shot Leo a look when saying those words, but he failed to get a reaction. Leo just filled his plate and shut the flask like nothing happened.
He stabbed a meatball and tossed it into his mouth while blankly watching Anderson talk. A minute later, the call was over, and Anderson let out a heavy sigh.
He glanced at Leo with a reluctant gaze for a few seconds before speaking.
"The chief called to warn about a potential animal attack—One involving Isaiah Thorne. He called to advise us to stay indoors or at least use the cars. Anderson's eyes searched Leo's face while speaking but didn't get the reaction he was expecting.
Leo just chuckled and began walking out of the kitchen with his plate of food in his hands.
"If someone told him that earlier today, he wouldn't be missing ." Leo scoffed as he walked out of the kitchen, leaving Anderson wondering the meaning behind those words and how this was related to his bloodied clothes.
Returning to the living room, he could see Felix chatting away happily with Mrs. Patricia, while Susan acted nonchalant even though she was interested in the conversation.
Today alone, he revived after getting murdered, gained these mysterious abilities, got to kill Isaiah, and is celebrating his 15th birthday with his favorite people in the world while the Thorne family ransacked the Hollow Pine forest for a corpse they will never find.
"You know what? You are a blessing," Leo said to the puppy-sized lion standing on his shoulder with a proud smile.
"I know… I know…"
