The Hexagram of Shattered Light

Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Lurking Darkness

Ethan stood with the mysterious woman on that small clearing bathed in faint light. The cold atmosphere pressed in, making the hair on his arms stand on end. The surrounding forest seemed to whisper in tongues, as if it held secrets too terrible to speak out loud."Be ready, and stay close," the woman said softly, her voice steady and firm. She raised her staff higher, the gentle glow expanding slightly. It felt like a fragile shield holding back the ever-encroaching shadows. But it wasn't enough to drive away the bitter chill or the eerie murmurs creeping in from the forest."You knew it would come?" Ethan gripped his sword tightly, scanning the woods around them. He wasn't sure what he was preparing for, but he knew he couldn't afford to turn back now."The power of the abyss never remains silent for long," she replied calmly. "The key has awakened it. It senses our presence. It sends its harbingers to test our strength."As if to prove her words, the ground trembled again. A deep, guttural roar echoed through the forest, growing louder with each passing second. The shadows beneath the trees seemed to move on their own, slithering and curling like living creatures."What are we dealing with?" Ethan asked, his voice low but firm."A fallen spirit," she said, her staff's light pulsing brighter. "Corrupted by the abyss's darkness. It's nothing more than a puppet, but still dangerous. We must stop it before it draws more power."A pair of crimson eyes emerged from the shadows, glowing with unnatural fire. Slowly, a massive figure stepped into view, its body twisted and covered in sharp, protruding spines. Its claws gleamed in the faint light, scraping against the air with a sound like nails on metal."Brace yourself," the woman warned, gripping her staff more tightly. "It won't hold back."Ethan nodded, determination lighting up his face. "I'll hold it off. You focus on stopping its source of power.""Don't do anything reckless," she cautioned, but Ethan was already moving. He knew he wasn't as powerful as the woman with her magic, but he believed his swordsmanship would buy them the time they needed. The corrupted creature roared and lunged, its claws swiping toward Ethan's head. He ducked and rolled to the side, countering with a swift slash that barely scratched its armored hide."Keep your distance!" the woman called out, her voice sharp. Her staff began to glow even brighter as she chanted an incantation under her breath. The light around them intensified until a radiant silver beam shot down from above, striking the creature squarely on the back. The monster screamed in agony, its dark flesh sizzling and cracking under the light's intensity. Ethan took the opportunity to dart in, slashing at its legs in a bid to unbalance it. Though he managed to slow it down for a moment, the beast lashed out wildly, striking him with one powerful swipe that sent him crashing into a tree.Grimacing in pain, Ethan staggered to his feet, gasping for breath. "We need to finish this!"The woman didn't respond. Instead, she poured all her energy into her spell. The light from her staff flared once more, and a silvery blast erupted, enveloping the creature completely. When the light finally faded, the corrupted figure was gone. The clearing was silent again, save for the sound of Ethan's heavy breathing."Good work," the woman said as she turned to him. "But we have much bigger challenges ahead."Ethan nodded, gripping his sword more tightly. His body ached, but his resolve was unshaken. "I'm ready. Let's keep moving."
