Chapter 16: Chapter 16: I Apologize for My Recklessness, Charlie
Someone's looking for me?
Charlie was puzzled.
That shouldn't be.
"I'm coming."
He put down his quill, stopped what he was doing, and got up to head outside.
The moment he stepped out the door, a familiar figure came into view.
Tall and gaunt.
Deep-set eyes.
A flowing black robe.
It was Snape.
Their eyes met.
The atmosphere grew incredibly awkward.
Charlie was filled with confusion.
Snape coming to find him was something he had never expected.
After all, not long ago, Snape had written a thousand-word letter just to reprimand him.
Given his prideful nature, seeking Charlie out in person seemed completely out of character.
On the other hand
Snape's expression at this moment was unusually complex.
As if he was struggling with something.
He had come here today bringing new magical books for Charlie
Books that Charlie had requested in his letter, asking for Snape's help in finding them.
At first, Snape had no intention of doing it.
Charlie had left far too abrupt and impolite an impression on him.
But ever since he discovered that Charlie's magical insights were correct
And that the corrections to his own notes were accurate
Snape's entire worldview had been shaken to its core.
It was too shocking.
A ten-year-old child, not even enrolled at Hogwarts yet
Had managed to deduce such knowledge just from reading a few magical books and notes.
He had only read for a day?
Yet he possessed such profound knowledge and insight.
From that moment on, Snape's impression of Charlie changed drastically.
He personally went to gather the books that Charlie needed.
And after much deliberation, he decided to deliver them himself.
For someone as proud as Snape, this was an extraordinary gesture.
The only person who had ever made him act like this before, was Lily.
"You read my letter?"
Out of nowhere, Snape blurted out the question.
"Yeah."
Charlie chuckled and nodded.
A faint flush crept onto Snape's face.
Embarrassment.
A burning sense of shame.
"Ahem…"
"I was rash. I didn't take the time to truly understand and analyze your theories and methods."
"But later, I carefully reviewed everything and tested them myself."
"You were right."
"It's hard to believe."
"Please forgive my recklessness…"
The last sentence was spoken in a barely audible voice.
But there was no hesitation in it.
At this moment, Snape no longer saw Charlie as just a magically gifted child.
He was Lily's son.
A wizard blessed by the heavens.
"Oh, it's fine. I was actually just about to write you another letter. I had just put my pen to paper, and here you are."
"What a surprise."
Charlie replied, his tone casual.
Snape raised an eyebrow.
He was going to write me a letter?
This child…
He hadn't taken it to heart at all.
Merlin's beard.
I'm such a fool.
I said such cruel things to such a kind-hearted child.
I truly am a fool!
Snape was overwhelmed with regret.
He felt as if he had committed some grave sin.
If Charlie weren't standing in front of him, he might have started pulling at his own hair in frustration.
"Charlie. You are truly remarkable, impossible not to like."
"I sincerely apologize. For my impulsiveness… and for your understanding."
Snape's voice was filled with sincerity.
Charlie was a little taken aback.
This old uncle
He might always wear a stern face,
But at the core, he was an honest man.
Charlie felt a little embarrassed now.
"Professor Snape, I doubt you came all this way just to say that?"
Charlie broke the slightly stiff atmosphere.
"Ah, right, right."
Snape snapped back to reality.
"I found these magical books for you. They are more advanced, and should keep you occupied for a while."
"I don't know your current level, but as for practical magic, it's best to wait until you're at Hogwarts."
"Without the proper equipment and conditions, it could be dangerous."
"I recommend focusing on theory and building a strong foundation first."
Snape offered his advice.
The two then found a café to sit down in.
Snape began telling Charlie about Hogwarts
That in a year, he would receive his acceptance letter.
The things he needed to watch out for at school.
The structure of the magical world.
And the taboos outside of it.
Piece by piece, he explained for a long time.
Charlie listened attentively.
Even though he had a general understanding from his past life,
Hearing it directly from Snape gave him a different perspective.
It helped him grasp the structure of the wizarding world more clearly.
Of course, Snape never mentioned Charlie's past.
And Charlie didn't ask.
He chose to ignore it.
He couldn't exactly say
"Oh, I remember that night, Uncle Snape. You came to my house, overwhelmed with grief and rage, and almost threw my dear little brother Harry to his death…"
Time passed quickly.
Their conversation was enjoyable.
Snape developed an excellent impression of Charlie.
He couldn't help but think
Lily really did give birth to a remarkable son.
Compared to that other boy, Harry
Charlie seemed far superior.
As they were about to part ways,
Snape hesitated for a moment.
Then, he pulled out a notebook from his robes.
"Charlie, over the years, I've encountered some magical problems that I haven't been able to solve."
"If you have time, you can take a look."
Oh, Merlin, did I really just hand this to him?
The moment Snape spoke, he regretted it.
It had been a sudden impulse.
The problems were real
Ones that had troubled Snape for years.
Yet, somewhere deep down, a tiny voice whispered
Charlie might actually help.
Forget it.
I've already given it to him. Let him take a look.
At the very least, he'll learn something from it.
As for solving them?
Highly unlikely.
Charlie accepted the notebook with a nod.
He didn't overthink it.
The two bid each other farewell.
Before leaving,
Snape made a promise
"If you ever need help, come to me."
"Whether it's about magic or anything else."
