THE LAST DREAMER

Chapter 9: The Final Confrontation Part 2: The Final Decision

The growl was followed by the unmistakable sound of claws scraping across the stone floor. Ethan's eyes widened in horror as the creature—Jake's form, now more twisted than ever—emerged from the shadows. Its body writhed like liquid, reshaping itself into something that defied all understanding. The darkness that clung to it was alive, moving with a purpose, and it focused solely on them. It was Jake. And yet, it wasn't. The creature's eyes glowed with an unnatural fire, and it stalked forward, its massive claws dragging along the floor. Every step it took seemed to shake the very foundations of the mansion. "Ethan…" Maya gasped, pulling at him, her voice filled with terror. "We have to finish this. We have to close the rift now!" But Ethan couldn't tear his eyes away from Jake's face—if it could still be called that. His best friend's features had been contorted beyond recognition, twisted by whatever dark force had taken hold of him. Jake, Ethan thought, Jake, I'm so sorry. The creature lunged toward them, faster than either of them could react. Maya screamed, but Ethan was already moving, his body reacting without thought. He pushed her out of the way just as the creature's claws slashed through the air where they had been standing. Ethan's body collided with the floor, and the wind was knocked out of him. His vision blurred, but he forced himself to focus. Maya was standing, frozen, watching in horror as Jake—the thing that used to be him—crawled toward them, its mouth opening to reveal rows of sharp, jagged teeth. "Maya! The book! Now!" Ethan shouted. Maya snapped out of her trance and rushed forward. She opened the book, her eyes scanning frantically for the words. No, Ethan thought, this can't end like this. I won't let it. The creature was getting closer. Ethan scrambled to his feet, but his body felt heavy, like the world was closing in on him. Maya's hand trembled as she began to chant the incantation. The rift flickered violently, its edges tearing at the fabric of reality, and the creature let out a screech that pierced through the room. The ground cracked further, and the walls began to crumble. The final moments of their struggle were happening in slow motion. The creature howled, its body bending unnaturally. The rift surged in a blinding flash. Ethan's heart raced, but through the chaos, he heard Maya's voice one final time. "We have to survive this..." The monstrous thing that had once been Jake now towered over them, a grotesque nightmare in human form. Its eyes, once filled with joy and mischief, were now nothing but a hollow abyss, reflecting the very darkness that had consumed it. Ethan could hear Maya's breath coming in quick, frantic gasps beside him, and he could feel his own heart pounding in his chest like a drum, each beat a reminder that time was running out. The air in the room grew heavy, thick with an otherworldly pressure that seemed to suffocate him. The mansion itself groaned and shifted around them as though it were alive, caught in the throes of a death rattle. The rift, now a seething portal to unimaginable horrors, flickered violently, its edges tearing at the seams of reality itself. Ethan could almost hear it calling, beckoning them toward it with the promise of oblivion. The creature's claws scraped the floor with a sound that sent chills down his spine. It moved slowly, deliberately, as if savoring the terror that radiated from both of them. It had all the time in the world. Maya was frozen in place, her body stiff and her eyes wide with horror as the creature closed the distance between them. Ethan's hand shot out, grabbing her arm, pulling her back. She stumbled slightly but remained rooted to the spot, her face pale and drawn. "Move, Maya!" Ethan shouted, his voice raw with urgency. But Maya's gaze never left Jake—or whatever had become of him. "I can't... I can't believe it. Ethan, it's him. He's gone. What do we do?" Ethan's heart ached, but he couldn't let his grief consume him now. Not when the very world they knew was on the brink of collapse. I should have done something sooner, he thought bitterly. I should have seen the signs. But it's too late for regrets now. All we have is each other. "I don't care if it's him anymore," Ethan said, his voice steady despite the chaos in his chest. "That thing? It's not Jake. It's a monster, and it's going to kill us if we don't stop it. We need to finish what we started. We need to close that rift." Maya nodded shakily, and as if on cue, the creature lunged forward. Its claws swiped through the air like a bladed whip, slashing at the ground, narrowly missing Maya. The floor beneath them cracked and splintered, sending jagged shards of stone flying in every direction. One of the shards grazed Maya's cheek, leaving a deep gash. Blood mixed with the dust on her face as she cried out in pain. "Ethan!" she screamed, clutching her face, tears filling her eyes. "We need to close the rift now!" Ethan clenched his fists. His mind raced, the sight of Maya in pain snapping him back into focus. The creature was relentless, its claws poised to strike again, but there was no time to think. The rift was growing—widening by the second. They could feel the pull of it, drawing them closer to the edge. Maya took a step forward, her body trembling, but there was fire in her eyes. She had made a decision. "I'll do it. Just... just protect me, Ethan." She opened the book again, flipping through its fragile pages, her fingers trembling as she searched for the incantation. The words were jumbled in her mind—too many of them, too little time. Her breath caught in her throat as the creature moved toward her again, its mouth gaping wide, as if it could smell her fear. Ethan's instincts screamed at him to protect her, to fight back, but there was nothing he could do. He had to trust Maya now, even if it meant trusting her with everything—his life, their future, their very existence. A deafening roar shattered the silence. The creature's body seemed to distort and elongate as it reached out, its claws tearing through the air toward Maya. Ethan surged forward without thinking, pushing her to the side just as the creature's claws slashed where she had been standing. The sharp, cold steel of the claws grazed his side, and he cried out in pain, but there was no time for him to worry about his own injury. "Ethan!" Maya screamed, her voice thick with panic. The rift pulsed again, its energy radiating through the room, thrumming against Ethan's chest. The walls buckled, and the entire mansion seemed to shake under the weight of the monstrous force they were fighting. Ethan's legs wobbled beneath him, his vision blurred, and his breath came in short, shallow gasps. But he couldn't stop now. Not when they were so close. Maya found the incantation, her fingers trembling as she recited the words aloud. But even as the first syllables left her mouth, the ground beneath them split open with a deafening crack. The rift shrieked, as if protesting against her efforts to stop it. The mansion began to collapse around them. Ethan grabbed her arm and pulled her away from the center of the room, dragging her toward the far corner, but it was too late. The floor beneath them crumbled, and they both tumbled into the darkness below. Ethan felt the coldness of the air swallow them as they fell into the depths of the mansion. They landed hard on the stone floor below, the impact knocking the wind out of Ethan's lungs. His head spun, and for a moment, he could only hear the rush of blood in his ears. He struggled to sit up, his hands pressed against the cold stone, trying to steady himself. "Maya?" he gasped, his voice barely a whisper. He could hear her groaning beside him, and as he turned toward her, he saw her sitting up, her face streaked with dirt and blood. Her eyes were wide, and she looked as though she were barely holding on. "We're not dead yet," Maya muttered, a faint smirk tugging at her lips, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. "That's something." But Ethan didn't feel relief. The rift was still there—still pulling at them, its energy palpable in the air. The creature's guttural growls reverberated from above them, and the shadows in the room grew deeper, swallowing everything in their path. "We need to finish this now," Ethan said, rising to his feet despite the pain shooting through his side. "This is it. We're not getting another chance." Maya nodded. Her hand gripped his tightly. She was ready. And so was he. Without a word, they made their way toward the final confrontation. The mansion groaned once more as the very earth trembled beneath them, but Ethan and Maya didn't stop. Not this time. They couldn't.
