Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Rumors about the Isisnu Clan
The Forget-Your-Sorrow Tavern was abuzz with conversation.
"What?! Ice Demon-Exterminating Technique?!"
Kira's surprised exclamation echoed through the small space, drawing everyone's attention. After hearing Natsu and the tavern owner Poole's story, the pieces of the puzzle finally began to fall into place.
The mention of the Ice Demon-Exterminating Technique triggered a cascade of thoughts in Kira's mind.
"If we're talking about the Ice Demon-Exterminating Technique, then doesn't that mean the man who was taken away a few years ago in Poole's story was Silver?"
Silver, Gray's father. Kira's memory of the original series stirred uneasily.
The Nine Demon Gates, the strongest members of the Hades Gate, a dark guild within the Balam Alliance, included Silver among their ranks. As an ice demon slayer, Silver was a key figure and also someone tied deeply to Gray's past. Kira thought back to Silver's history, as revealed in the original Fairy Tail story.
Ten years prior, Silver had been killed by the demon Deliora. After his death, his body was resurrected by Keith, a necromancer and fellow member of the Nine Demon Gates. For seventeen years, Silver existed in this unnatural state until the ultimate confrontation between Fairy Tail and Hades Gate.
From the original storyline, Kira knew Silver had learned the Ice Demon-Exterminating Technique during his time as a reanimated corpse, eventually passing it on to Gray. But where had Silver acquired this technique? The source of this magic was never fully explained.
And now, Kira had his answer: it was "stolen" from here.
"This must be the world patching itself…" Kira muttered.
In the original story, this mission and its related plotline hadn't existed. It was as if the world, adapting to his presence, was filling in the gaps.
"Yes, the Ice Demon-Exterminating Technique," Poole confirmed, looking puzzled by Kira's reaction. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing, just… surprised," Kira replied, quickly masking his thoughts.
Natsu grinned and chimed in. "Yeah! I was surprised too when I first heard about it! I mean, magic specifically for killing demons? I thought maybe it was taught by demons themselves!"
Lucy noticed Kira's thoughtful expression. "What's wrong with this magic?"
Kira shook his head. "It's just… strange."
He then elaborated, sharing what he had pieced together from the tale of the Black and White Goddess. "Originally, I thought the Isisnu tribe might have inherited Ice God-Exterminating Magic. It would make sense for a clan devoted to serving a deity to wield god-slaying magic. But instead, they possess demon-slaying magic. Something doesn't add up."
"That is strange…" Lucy murmured, placing her chin in her hand as she thought. "There's a sense of disconnection here. The Black and White Goddesses, god-slaying magic, demons, and demon-slaying magic… They feel like they should be connected somehow, but the pieces don't quite fit together."
"Could it have something to do with the man mentioned in the story?" Lucy's voice sharpened as she sat upright, an idea sparking in her mind.
Kira nodded, confirming her theory. "I've been wondering the same thing. But so far, there's no information about him. I'm not even sure if he really existed."
Poole, the tavern owner, cleared his throat and interrupted. "Maybe he did exist."
Everyone turned to face him.
"You know something, Uncle Poole?" Kira asked, his tone curious but cautious.
Poole nodded, pouring himself a glass of liquor. He took a sip and leaned back. "You mentioned the Black and White Goddess story earlier. It reminded me of a legend from our tribe, something I'd nearly forgotten. You've already learned that our Isisnu clan sees itself as descendants of gods, sworn to serve the deity of ice and snow. But there's an old story…"
And so, Poole began to recount the legend.
Long ago, when the world was young and the conflicts between gods and demons raged, the first ancestor of the Isisnu tribe—a being revered as a god—was manipulated by demons. Tricked into betraying his own kin, he fought his brothers, resulting in great tragedy.
Before his death, the ancestor realized the truth of the demons' schemes. In his final act, he transformed his divine power into a magic capable of destroying demons: the Demon-Exterminating Technique.
"There are many such tales passed down in the tribe," Poole concluded. "Some are undoubtedly embellished by later generations, and others are so old we can't verify their truth. This story is just one of many."
Kira leaned back, a thoughtful expression on his face. "It's strange how often these ancient legends hold a kernel of truth. Maybe it's not a coincidence that this legend aligns with the Black and White Goddess story."
Poole laughed heartily. "You believe in fate? You're still young!"
"Just a little," Kira admitted with a smile. "Sometimes, connecting the dots between stories, legends, and facts can reveal something new. Maybe if we combine everything we know, we can uncover the truth."
With a dramatic flourish, Kira spun a speculative tale aloud:
"Imagine this: A woman wielding the Ice God-Exterminating Technique—let's call her the Black Goddess—and another woman, her sister, descended from the Ice God, known as the White Goddess. Raised by opposing forces, these sisters fought a decisive battle on Mount Zonia.
"But in the heat of battle, they discovered their familial bond and chose to defy fate. Yet, through demonic schemes, both were ultimately slain. Before they died, their powers were merged, creating the Ice Demon-Exterminating Technique, which they passed down to their descendants."
Kira grinned as he finished. "A perfect story, don't you think? Drama, tragedy, and magic!"
Poole laughed so hard his shoulders shook. "You've got quite the imagination, boy! That's a good one!"
Lucy, however, was impressed by Kira's insight. "It makes sense! There's definitely something connecting all these stories and powers."
Kira turned his attention to Klaue, who sat restrained in the corner. Her magic-sealing restraints—crafted from a magic-sealing stone—rendered her powerless. Though she struggled and whimpered, she couldn't break free.
Poole eyed her warily. "That… thing. Is it really a demon?"
"Most likely," Kira replied. "And from the looks of it, she's not alone."
"I've never seen demons myself," Poole admitted. "But I've heard the elders speak of them. Physical attacks are useless against them, which matches what you've said about her ability to transform into clouds."
Poole glanced at Kira with admiration. "You defeated her without any demon-slaying magic. That's no small feat."
Kira chuckled. "Of course! I'm no ordinary wizard, after all."
Turning serious, he bowed slightly. "As for Natsu… He acted recklessly in accepting this mission. I'll ensure the guild handles his punishment. In the meantime, I'll take responsibility for completing the mission myself."
Natsu groaned from his spot, while Happy whispered, "Here comes the devilish training…"
