Chapter 2: Conrad Cruz I
" Home sweet home"
Conrad stood listlessly in the door way to his home. It wasn't easy for the man to come back to the place that haunted his dreams even after a year of preparation. But it was needed.
His home, was modest, especially for the wealth his family had accumulated through the generations. Four stories stories with a small attic and painted with a cozy green color. A little drive way with three cars. Two that belonged to his parents, and one that his older sister recently obtained.
The thought of his sister gave him pause, a wave of guilt washing over him before he calmed with a shuddering breath. Her death had been the worst.
If only he had bee-
" Let's just put a stop to that right now. I know it's my fault, but I can't change the past." Conrad told himself.
After putting his keys in a bowl near the door and hanging his coat on the hanger embedded into the wall, Cruz slowly trailed in the house.
His hand slid against the walls as he walked. Memories unbidden, played in his mind. Every groove, indent, and smudge held a life time of memories.
He could almost see his mother, a bright eyed woman who never ceased to smile, sitting in her personal study as he walked past the room in question. Vaguely the sweet music of her laughter when the woman found something particularly funny in her book played in his head.
Conrad had always thought she should have been a singer. Though, stubborn woman she was, his mother would brush it off saying she was "out of practice". The Sly smile she gave, which his mum always thought was hidden, told him that their was more to it than that.
But he could never figure it out, and now he would never. His soul burned with anger at the thought, but with practiced ease, he let it shimmer away.
Warmth filled his soul instead as he gazed at the living room.
Unopened presents laid strewn about. Covered in a layer of dust from a year of staying in a unkempt house.
A Christmas tree with it's bulbs long dead loomed over the room too. Frankly he still didn't understand why his sister insisted in buying such a large tree. The Bulbs didn't even reach the top because all of them had a sudden case of "bad legs" and not wanting to grab the ladder from the garage.
Of course later they kept procrastinating, and eventually forgot about it all together. They did manage to get the star up.
Looking at the top of the tree made Conrad chuckle. A memory playing in his head.
.....
" Q, that cannot be safe" Conrad said with a amused smile as he craned his head to look at his sister.
Up top the tree a petite woman wearing red and black pajamas held on for dear life. Really it looked like the woman was a second away from falling on her ass, and breaking it too. Yet despite this the woman, who's blond hair was frazzled and un-cared for, held a wide grin.
" Oh come on Lil Khan, I'll be fine!" She said with a laugh.
With a grunt the woman pulled herself up another few inches, nearly at the top. A Star with the words "#Q was here" in sloppy green paint in her hand.
Conrad looked to his left at his father, hoping to get some support. Only for his father to chuckle and shrug.
"Don't look at me, she's a grown woman. If she want's to climb a tree she can climb a tree… Not it for taking her to the hospital if she falls though." Conrad's father, Chase said with a laugh.
Chase was a tall man, standing at a towering Six-foot-six and built for battle. A necessity of his job as a boxer.
Similar to Conrad's Sister, blonde hair fell from his head freely. Two Piercing blue eyes accompanying the look. He too was in Pajamas, though Dragon themed ones.
Chase's laughter was cut short when a light slap hit his arm in chastisement. The slap coming from his wife, Della.
Della looked different from her daughter, having short black hair, and brown eyes. Though her height matched quite well, being only 5"3 to her daughter 5"6.
" Chase Benjamin Cruz, you will take your daughter to the hospital if she falls." She said with a glare, though anyone could tell she wasn't being really serious.
None of them actually thought the elder sister would fall. They were proved right a few seconds later when she reached the top and placed the star on the very top. Letting a whoop of excitement as she did so.
Another handful of seconds had her climbing back down with a radiant, if not a little manic, smile.
" Told you I'd get it." She said confidently.
Conrad rolled his eyes.
" yeah yeah, what ever you say. Maybe you should sign up for the circus with that act you got there. I doubt anyone's seen a psychiatrist monkey." Conrad mocked.
" Oi, who you calling a monkey you little shit." She responded with narrowed eyes.
" Little? Last time I checked I'm taller than you by like 8 inches."
" Bah, your still gonna be little to me. I helped change your diapers."
" So? I remember that one time-"
" Shshsh You said you wouldn't talk about that."
" Ah, really, cause I don't remember anything of the sort. Just you attempting to bribe me with candy so you could-"
" Alright that's it!"
With that she lunged at Conrad with a fierce look in her eye. The Man in question could have easily dodged, cursed energy or no, but didn't. It had been a while since he had seen his sister, understandable since her job took up much of her time, and figured some quality time would be fun.
So they both went down on the carpeted ground with a thud. Both laughing as they vied for "dominance". This lasted about ten seconds before Conrad found himself in a headlock, having purposely let his older sister win like he always did.
" Say it!"
" Hmmmm, no, I don't think I will."
Q squeezed harder, making Conrad choke a bit.
" O-okay, Uncle uncle," he said with rapid taps on her shoulder.
A satisfied grin stretched her face as the eldest of the duo, let go. Allowing Conrad "slump" to the ground.
Their parents, watching the entire thing, chuckled at their antics. This had been a tradition between the two since the mother and father could remember. And despite this, Conrad hadn't won once.
Chase had his suspicious on that, but right now it didn't matter much.
" Okay, lets put all the presents under the tree now that it's done, yes?" Della said with a smile.
The rest of the family agreed. Deciding to get it over with. Christmas was fifteen days away, so they might as well be done with it.
