Chapter 251: Chapter 251: The Power of Sheer Will
Chapter 251: The Power of Sheer Will
The moment they heard Little Eevee was missing, Arthur's entire team of Pokémon grew tense.
Specter was the most agitated, which in turn made Mismagius anxious as well.
Greninja was deeply worried about his youngest little brother, while Honedge was immediately slung onto Arthur's back.
Honedge, for its part, wasn't worried. It knew that in situations like this, its fate was to be wielded. It had long since accepted this, adopting a resigned sense of "just get on with it."
Arthur frantically searched everywhere. At first, he worried that Little Eevee had been snatched by some Pokémon traffickers.
But after asking the hotel staff, no one had seen a thing. Just then, he got a call from Ivy.
"Hey, Arthur, you haven't left yet, have you? Your Eevee somehow ended up in my room. If you're still at the hotel, come on over."
Well, that's… unexpected.
With a sense of bewilderment, Arthur went to Ivy and Bianca's room.
As soon as he walked in, he saw his Little Eevee covering its face with its front paws, pinned under the claw of a giant, snow-white fox that stood as tall as a person.
The one holding Little Eevee down was Ivy's Ninetales.
Seeing the descendant of his infamous ancestor pinned under someone else's paw, Specter was about to rush forward in a rage to argue. But before the energy for Shadow Claw could even gather, Little Eevee let out a series of frantic yelps, stopping Specter and Mismagius from doing anything rash.
"What on earth is going on?"
Arthur was completely baffled at this point.
Little Eevee was communicating with Specter through its cries, not through telepathy, so a human like him couldn't understand a word.
The more extroverted sister, Bianca, took the lead at this moment, laughingly explaining the situation to Arthur.
"Your little Eevee here is quite the character. He climbed onto our windowsill trying to give my sister's Vulpix a flower, but he ended up getting himself stuck outside the window."
"Uh…"
Arthur had never imagined this would be the situation.
He turned his head and saw Little Eevee, still pinned under the Ninetales's paw, covering its face with its forelegs as if it never wanted to be seen again.
He must have been dying of shame…
Giving a flower was one thing, but getting stuck on a windowsill was mortifying. To make matters worse, this was the twelfth floor; he couldn't even jump down.
In the end, it was Ivy who discovered him when she returned, having her Ninetales lift him back inside.
This Ninetales was a direct elder to the little Vulpix, which explained why it was still pinning down this little punk who was trying to steal its family's treasure.
Arthur looked silently at Little Eevee, sighing to himself. You're a real disgrace to your ancestor.
Even Specter had dematerialized and phased into a nearby wall, clearly not wanting to come out.
This was just too embarrassing!
If his ancestor knew his descendant had ended up in such a state, he would probably be spinning in his grave.
Arthur was helpless. He first apologized to Ivy, then thanked the Ninetales before finally picking up his disgraceful little creature from under its paw.
As Arthur lifted him by the scruff of his neck, Little Eevee kept its face tightly covered, its tail curled under its belly, looking as if it wanted to roll itself into a ball and disappear.
This was his first time falling for someone, and that self-locking window had dealt him a crushing defeat. Damn it!
Nearby, Ivy and Bianca were visibly trying to hold back their laughter.
However, Arthur noticed that the little Vulpix on the sofa was watching the unlucky creature in his hands with great interest.
So, he decided to check in on his little guy's romantic prospects.
"By the way, where's the flower? Did you get to give it to her?"
"Ee-vee..."
Little Eevee let out a few tiny whimpers in his hand, but—
Arthur didn't understand…
With a sigh, Arthur gently pulled Little Eevee's front paws away from its face.
"Be brave, don't be shy. It's nothing to be ashamed of. Your ancestor did this kind of thing all the time."
Of course, Arthur communicated this part via telepathy.
The stories of his ancestor were best kept among themselves. If word got out, he was worried he might get beaten up just walking down the street…
Little Eevee looked doubtful, but it finally lowered its paws.
Then, it suddenly opened its mouth and blew a gentle puff of air.
As Arthur watched in complete astonishment, Little Eevee exhaled a breath of frosty air that formed into the shape of crystalline snowflakes.
The snowflakes then magically combined in mid-air, assembling into a perfectly crafted, lifelike ice lotus.
"Wow! That's beautiful! I had no idea your Eevee could do that!"
The lively Bianca was the first to exclaim in amazement.
But Ivy and Arthur were even more shocked by something else—
"Is that… Icy Wind? How can an Eevee use an Ice-type move?"
Arthur was so surprised he lifted Little Eevee right up to his face, examining it from top to bottom in disbelief.
Before evolving, Eevee is a Normal-type Pokémon. Although it has a wide range of evolutionary paths—a full eight options—the moves it can learn before evolving are generally limited to Normal, Ground, Fairy, and Fighting types.
While one of Eevee's evolutions is Glaceon, Ice-type moves were definitely not in its pre-evolution movepool.
Ivy was also staring at Arthur's Eevee, scrutinizing it from every angle.
It was Arthur who figured it out first.
"Oh, I get it. It's Copycat. You're using Copycat."
The Normal-type move, Copycat: its effect is to mimic a move the user has recently seen.
Little Eevee had used Copycat to imitate Vulpix's Icy Wind.
That solved Ivy's puzzle, but it only created more questions for Arthur.
"When did you learn Copycat?"
He hadn't even started formally training Little Eevee yet. So far, he had only been working on its fundamentals, just having it run with him during his morning exercises.
When Arthur first caught the little guy, he had tested him. Back then, he only knew Growl, Tackle, Tail Whip, and Sand Attack.
In just a few months, had this little guy really taught himself a brand-new move?
"Vee..."
Little Eevee whimpered again in embarrassment.
This time, he finally remembered he could use telepathy to communicate with his master.
"I… I just learned it today. Because Vulpix said she really likes snowflakes made of ice, but I can't breathe ice. I tried really, really hard to give her an ice flower, and then… and then I could suddenly use this move."
"..."
For a moment, Arthur was at a loss for words.
In the real world, it was incredibly difficult for a Pokémon to learn a new move. Otherwise, move tutors wouldn't be a core asset for professional clubs.
Outside of the clubs, private dojos that taught Pokémon moves were extremely expensive. It was just like the one Arthur had visited in Lavender Town, where the single lesson he got for free was worth thousands on the market.
Furthermore, it normally took a significant amount of time for a Pokémon to master a new skill.
His Greninja had been trying to learn Rest for several weeks now and still hadn't mastered it.
Yet this little Eevee, driven by the sheer, powerful will to give a Vulpix a flower, had managed to master Copycat in less than a day!
What could Arthur even say to that?
There was only one thing he could think. Kid, you truly are your ancestor's descendant…
