Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Ace VS Law
Marine Headquarters - Intelligence Division.
The afternoon sun streamed through the blinds, casting a quiet golden glow on the dark wooden bookshelves. The scent of tea filled the air with a sense of tranquility. Vice Admiral Tsuru had just put down her files, rubbing her weary brow as she took a sip of hot tea. Her expression was always calm and composed, but now, a hint of fatigue flickered in her eyes.
A light knock came at the door. "Come in."
The door opened, and Roy walked in, his white "Justice" coat swaying behind him. His familiar smile was as confident as ever, yet with a refreshing air of ease. "Lady Tsuru, my apologies for the intrusion."
Tsuru looked up. Seeing Roy, a soft light appeared in her eyes. "Roy. Coming straight to the Intelligence Division upon your return? It seems you have urgent business."
Roy sat down opposite her, his posture humble but not stiff. "Indeed, there is something I'd like to ask for your help with."
Tsuru set down her teacup, her hands folded on the desk, her gaze sharp yet peaceful. "Speak."
Roy smiled and took a neatly folded piece of paper from his coat, pushing it across the desk. "I'd like the Intelligence Division to help me find someone."
Tsuru took the paper, her slender fingers unfolding it. The handwriting was neat and strong: —[Gild Tesoro]
Her brow furrowed slightly as she read the name. "This name... doesn't seem to have any special records. Is he a pirate? Or a merchant in the underworld?"
"For now," Roy shook his head, "he may be just a nobody. But his potential is very high. In the future, he may become someone capable of shaking the world economy~"
Tsuru's gaze shifted between Roy and the paper, her fingertips tapping the desk with a crisp sound. "For Rear Admiral Roy to come personally and place such importance on him... it seems this person is not simple." She looked up, her eyes narrowing, her gaze sharp and appraising. "Your reason?"
Roy smiled, a meaningful curve to his lips. "In the future, his abilities will be of great use to the Marines. Especially—" he changed his tone, his voice growing serious, "—especially when confronting 'certain existences'."
Tsuru's fingers paused, a deep understanding in her eyes. "'Certain existences'..." she repeated softly, her gaze growing even deeper. It was clear she knew exactly what Roy was referring to.
After a few seconds of silence, Tsuru finally nodded, placing the paper in a drawer. Her voice was gentle but serious. "The Intelligence Division will prioritize this matter, Roy. However—" she looked at the young man before her with a complex mix of motherly affection and awe, "—you... you always manage to see things that others cannot."
Roy smiled, his eyes as calm as the sea, both humble and sharp. "Thank you, Lady Tsuru." He stood, bowed, and left with crisp, decisive steps.
The door closed softly, and the office returned to its quiet state. Tsuru picked up her teacup, gazing in the direction Roy had left, a faint smile on her lips as she mused to herself, "What an inscrutable young man..."
Marine Training Grounds - Afternoon.
The sun beat down like a furnace on the sandy training ground, sweat evaporating the moment it hit the ground. Ace, Luffy, and Law were already waiting by the side. Zephyr was leading a group of new recruits through high-intensity physical training, his voice as booming and authoritative as ever. The recruits' uniforms were soaked with sweat, but not one of them complained, especially Drake, whose movements were meticulous and his gaze focused, having already fully adapted to the rhythm and intensity of the recruit camp.
Swoosh!
A white blur flashed, and Roy's figure appeared as if from thin air, landing steadily at the edge of the training ground.
"Roy!" Luffy was the first to spot him, waving his hands excitedly, his eyes shining.
Roy smiled and first gave Zephyr a standard military salute. "Instructor Zephyr!"
Zephyr wiped the sweat from his brow, his gaze sweeping over Roy and then the white-haired boy behind him. Though he was curious, he didn't ask, a look of gratified approval in his eyes. He had always trusted Roy's judgment.
Roy turned to Ace, a slight smile on his face. "Weren't you always clamoring to test yourself against Law? Today's your chance."
Ace was taken aback, then a provocative grin spread across his face as he looked at Law. "Can he really fight? I bet he doesn't even know how to use Haki."
Law's expression was cool; he just glanced at him without a word.
Smack! Roy slapped the back of Ace's head. "Just get in there. Stop talking nonsense. Use your Haki as you please. Don't hold back."
Ace rubbed the back of his head, grinning. "Yeah, yeah!"
Roy then turned to Law, his tone calm but encouraging. "You too. You can use your full ability."
Law nodded slightly, walking calmly to the center of the training ground. The surrounding recruits stopped their training, their faces filled with curiosity and excitement, all eyes on the two in the center.
"Hey, isn't that Ace? The monster kid who could use Haki at 9!"
"Who's the kid in the hat? He looks pretty scrawny. Can he handle it?"
"Don't underestimate him! Rear Admiral Roy brought him here, so he must have some skills!"
In the crowd, Drake stood with his arms crossed, his gaze fixed intently on the two, a flicker of fighting spirit in his eyes.
In the center of the training ground, Ace flexed his wrists, a sly smile on his face. "Try not to cry, newbie."
Law's expression was indifferent, his eyes under the brim of his hat as calm as still water, only a slightly raised eyebrow betraying a hint of disdain. "So much chatter."
Zephyr stood on the sidelines, his arms crossed, his voice booming. "Begin!"
—The battle erupted!
Ace struck first, lunging forward like a cheetah, his fist coated in a faint layer of Armament Haki, aimed straight at Law's face. "So fast!" Law's pupils constricted, but his expression remained calm.
He raised his right hand—"ROOM."
A pale blue, spherical space instantly expanded, small but large enough to cover both of them. Ace's fist seemed to hit empty air, passing straight through Law's body without any impact, like punching through mist.
"What?!" Ace's pupils shrank in shock. He was sure he had aimed correctly.
The onlookers erupted in an uproar.
"H-he just disappeared!"
"No! That's a Devil Fruit ability!"
Law's figure materialized behind Ace, a scalpel in his right hand, its blade glinting. A chill ran down Ace's spine. He twisted his body to dodge, the blade grazing his clothes. He quickly created distance, his eyes for the first time showing a look of gravity and confusion. "What is this ability...?!" He had never truly fought a Devil Fruit user before, and the feeling of seeing his opponent right in front of him but being unable to touch them left him feeling a bit helpless for the first time.
Law's expression was calm as he brought his hands together. "Shambles."
Swoosh! The sand beneath Ace's feet instantly turned into a solid slab of rock, throwing him off balance. "Damn it!" Ace cursed inwardly. He stomped the ground and leaped into the air, his legs kicking out—"Tempest Kick!"
Dozens of wind blades shot out, whistling through the air. Law's eyes narrowed. He activated his ROOM again, instantly swapping places with a nearby rock. The wind blades hit empty space, kicking up a cloud of sand.
On the sidelines, Luffy jumped up and down excitedly. "Awesome! Ace can't hit him!"
Drake frowned, a look of amazement in his eyes. "A spatial ability... No wonder Rear Admiral Roy thinks so highly of him."
Zephyr stroked his chin thoughtfully. "The Op-Op Fruit... that old fool Sengoku really adopted an incredible grandson."
In the center of the training ground, Ace was panting, sweat beading on his forehead. For the first time, facing a Devil Fruit user, he felt a sense of near-despair. "This isn't going to work..." He gritted his teeth, his muscles tensing like a drawn bowstring. "Soru!"
His figure vanished, reappearing in front of Law in the next instant. "Got you!" His Haki-clad fist slammed into Law's abdomen.
Thump! Law grunted, knocked back several meters. He landed on one knee, his face pale.
A gasp went through the crowd. "He hit him!"
Ace panted, staring at Law, a new fighting spirit in his eyes. "So Devil Fruit users aren't invincible after all!"
However, Law slowly looked up, a cold smile on his lips, as if he had seen right through Ace's thoughts. He flicked his finger upwards. "Scalpel."
Ace froze. He tried to activate "Iron Body" but suddenly felt a cold sensation on his chest. He looked down to see his jacket had been neatly sliced open, but his skin was completely unharmed. If that attack hadn't held back, he would have been... A drop of cold sweat trickled down his temple.
Law slowly stood up, dusting himself off, his expression calm. "Still want to fight?"
Ace was silent for a moment, then burst out laughing. "Interesting! Let's go again!"
But Zephyr raised his hand, his voice authoritative. "That's enough."
They both looked at him. Zephyr walked forward, his expression serious. "Ace, your Haki application is still not proficient enough." He then turned to Law, his gaze softening slightly. "Law, this is your first time using your fruit ability in a real fight. Your stamina is almost at its limit, isn't it?"
Law, breathing heavily, nodded, his face still calm.
Roy walked over, smiling as he patted both their shoulders. "You both did well."
Ace pouted, but his eyes shone with determination. "I'll definitely win next time."
Law glanced at him coolly. "As you wish."
Zephyr looked at them and suddenly burst out laughing. "Roy, these two kids... they're interesting!"
Roy's lips curved upwards. "So, I'll have to trouble you to look after them more in the future, Instructor."
Zephyr waved his hand magnanimously. "No problem! The more future pillars of the Marines, the better!"
The new recruits murmured among themselves. Drake's eyes were fixed on Law's back as he secretly clenched his fists. "I have to... get stronger, too!"
The sun shone down on the training ground, reflecting the burning dreams and aspirations in the hearts of the new recruits.
