The President Fell for His White House Cleaner

Chapter 56: The New Roommate and a Coded Conversation

The introduction of Agent Anya Petrova changed the entire dynamic of Ellie's White House life. Anya was assigned as a "junior administrative assistant" within the housekeeping department, a perfect cover that allowed her to be almost constantly by Ellie's side. Anya was everything Ellie wasn't: precise, observant, and subtly lethal. She spoke flawless Xanadu, moved with silent efficiency, and her eyes missed nothing.

Their initial interactions were a blend of awkwardness and a growing, grudging respect. Anya, despite her professional demeanor, had a dry wit that occasionally slipped out, and Ellie, for her part, found Anya's calm competence surprisingly comforting amidst the escalating tension.

"Good morning, Miss Chen," Anya would say, materializing silently beside Ellie as she polished a banister. "The President suggested the dust in this area might be... conspiring. Perhaps a 'strategic re-evaluation' is in order." This was their new code for "Ambassador Liu's team is active, and we need to be extra vigilant."

Ellie, catching on quickly, would respond with something equally absurd, like, "Indeed, Agent Petrova. And I believe the chandelier requires a 'clarity update.' Its brilliance might be hiding some very small, very ambitious dust mites." This meant "I understand, and I'll be looking for unusual details."

Their first joint assignment involved the "strategic re-evaluation" of a small, rarely used conference room where Ambassador Liu was scheduled to have a private meeting. Ellie was to clean, while Anya, disguised as her new assistant, would subtly sweep for bugs, place a micro-recorder, and observe any unusual activities from Liu's advance team.

As Ellie vigorously scrubbed the conference table, muttering about "stubborn diplomatic stains," Anya moved like a ghost, her slender fingers deftly checking behind portraits, under tables, and inside light fixtures. She was quick, silent, and incredibly efficient. Ellie felt a strange mix of admiration and awe. It was like watching a highly skilled dancer perform a very dangerous ballet.

Suddenly, Anya paused by a ventilation grate, her eyes narrowing. She subtly gestured to Ellie, a slight nod of her head. Ellie understood: target acquired. Anya then casually produced a small spray bottle from her cleaning caddy (a tool Ellie didn't even know she had), gave the grate a quick, almost imperceptible squirt, and resumed her "cleaning."

"Is that a new disinfectant, Miss Petrova?" Ellie whispered, playing along.

Anya gave a faint smile. "A specialized formula, Miss Chen. For particularly... tenacious airborne particles. Ensures optimal clarity for all discussions." It was their code for "I've neutralized a listening device, and I've placed our own recorder."

Later, as they walked away, Ellie leaned closer. "So, did the 'tenacious particles' prove difficult to dislodge?"

Anya's lips twitched. "They were quite... verbose, Miss Chen. But ultimately, susceptible to a carefully applied solution."

That night, Ellie found Anya unexpectedly waiting in her small staff room. "The President thought it best if we were... more efficient in our collaboration, Miss Chen," Anya said, her expression perfectly neutral. "I've been assigned to share your quarters. For 'enhanced coordination of housekeeping duties,' of course."

Ellie stared, bewildered. A roommate? A highly trained, silent operative as her roommate? This was a new level of covert operation. Her tiny room, already bursting with her meager belongings, now had to accommodate a Secret Service agent.

Anya began to unpack a small, remarkably compact bag. Everything was neat, organized, and probably contained more gadgets than Ellie's entire cleaning cart. Ellie watched, a mix of apprehension and amusement bubbling up. Her personal space was now a shared command center. The "Blunder Years" were definitely behind her. Her life had officially become a very crowded, very covert, very bizarre reality show. And she was the unwitting star.
