The President Fell for His White House Cleaner

Chapter 64: The Midnight Rendezvous and a Disguised Protector

The hours leading up to midnight were a blur of nervous anticipation for Ellie. Anya Petrova, her silent roommate, helped her select suitable clothing – dark, unremarkable, blending into the night. She gave Ellie last-minute instructions on communication signals, emergency procedures, and how to subtly observe her surroundings without arousing suspicion.

"Remember, Miss Chen," Anya whispered, her voice calm and steady as she helped Ellie put on a nondescript scarf. "You are vulnerable. You are desperate. You are looking for a way out. This is your strength. Let your natural nervousness guide you."

Agent Miller had briefed her on the layout of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, identifying potential vantage points for their surveillance. He would be there, a silent guardian in the shadows. Ambassador Li Mei provided crucial intelligence on Mr. Han's known tactics and psychological profile.

Ellie clutched the decoy USB drive in her pocket, its false weight a constant reminder of the high stakes. She went over her lines in her head – rehearsed pleas for help, feigned desperation, hints of valuable information. But mostly, she relied on her own natural ability to appear flustered and overwhelmed.

At precisely 11:45 PM, Ellie, accompanied by Anya Petrova (who vanished seamlessly into the D.C. night as they approached the memorial), arrived at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The iconic monument glowed softly, its reflection rippling in the dark water. The air was cold, crisp, and eerily quiet. It was the perfect setting for a clandestine meeting.

She walked towards the designated cherry blossom tree, its bare branches stark against the night sky. She saw no one. Just the familiar, comforting silhouette of the Lincoln Memorial. She began to shiver, partly from the cold, partly from fear.

Then, from the deeper shadows near a cluster of bushes, a figure emerged. It was Mr. Han. He moved with a quiet confidence that was unsettling. He was alone. Or so it seemed.

"Miss Chen," Mr. Han greeted, his voice as smooth as polished stone. "Prompt. Good." He approached her, stopping a few feet away. "Do you have what we discussed?"

Ellie forced herself to tremble slightly. "Mr. Han. Yes. I... I have the drive. But I'm scared. This is too much. I just want to be safe. And clear my father's name." She clutched her pocket.

Mr. Han's eyes narrowed, assessing her. "Fear is a powerful motivator, Miss Chen. Wise. Give me the drive. And tell me what you've seen. We will handle the rest. Your father's name will be cleared. And you will be free. A new life. Anywhere you wish." He extended a hand.

Ellie hesitated, feigning uncertainty, glancing around subtly. She noticed a faint flicker of light from a distant tree line – a signal from Agent Miller that their hidden surveillance was active.

"How can I trust you?" Ellie stammered, trying to make her voice crack. "You work for Minister Chen. He framed my father."

Mr. Han's smile remained fixed. "Minister Chen is a man of many interests. Some are... misunderstood. But he values loyalty. And he values crucial information. He wants to know what secrets you've uncovered, Miss Chen. Secrets that threaten his... interests. Tell me. And give me the drive." He took a step closer, his presence subtly intimidating.

Ellie's heart hammered. She knew this was the moment. She had to convince him. But she also had to buy time, to see who else might emerge from the shadows. She needed to look even more vulnerable.

"I... I can't just give it to you!" Ellie pleaded, taking a step back, her eyes wide with feigned panic. "It's too much! This could expose everything! What if someone sees us?!" She looked around desperately, then, with a subtle, rehearsed glance, her eyes lingered for a fraction of a second on a seemingly ordinary park bench nearby. It was a pre-arranged signal from Agent Miller: Check the bench. An unexpected ally is close.

Mr. Han's gaze followed hers briefly, then snapped back to her, a hint of impatience in his eyes. "No one is here, Miss Chen. Just you and me. Give me the drive." He took another step forward, closing the distance between them.

Ellie's breath caught. She had played her part. Now, she needed to see who the "unexpected ally" was. And if this was indeed the moment of truth.
