Chapter 21: Chapter 20
Home coming
The decision to bring Preston home tonight instead of waiting until his birthday filled me with excitement. The idea of surprising him couldn't be resisted, but it also left me thinking about what else I could give him for his birthday. A car, maybe—that way he'd have something to use when going to college.
On the other hand, Preston sat beside Caleb in the car, his heart racing with a mix of excitement and nerves. He was finally going home with him ,something he'd dreamed of for years. But along with the happiness came a small undercurrent of fear. Would his feelings betray him? Would Caleb notice how he looked at him or how his heart raced when they were close?
Earlier that night, he'd kissed his cheek in his joy—and his sure he didn't mind. If anything, he smiled afterward, something that replayed in my mind and brought a shy grin to my face now. The memory of how soft his cheek felt under my lips made me blush.
"Are you okay, Pee?" I asked, noticing the quiet smile playing on his lips.
"I'm fine," he replied, his voice soft but steady. "I just… I can't believe we're together now."
"Believe it," I said with a wink.
"Are we going to the house you share with Jason?" he asked. "Hope he wouldn't mind me staying there."
I chuckled and shook my head. "It's a surprise," I said, keeping my tone teasing but firm.
The drive from the orphanage to the new house took about an hour and a half. By the time we arrived, Preston was already asleep, exhausted from the excitement of the day. I parked the car and turned to look at him.
There he was, my pretty boy, sleeping peacefully beside me. It had been so long since I'd seen him like this, and I'd missed it more than words could express. His delicate features were bathed in the soft glow of the dashboard lights. I couldn't help myself—I reached out and gently touched his face, tracing his brows and brushing my thumb across his lips. Those lips… I wondered when I'd have the courage to claim them, to feel their fullness against mine.
After a while, I leaned closer and whispered, "Pee, we're here."
He stirred, blinking sleepily, his soft voice asking, "Are we there?"
I smiled, rubbing his messy hair. "Yes, we're here. Come on, sleepyhead."
I stepped out of the car and walked to his side, helping him out. Handing him a set of keys, I said, "This is your birthday gift."
He looked at the keys in his hand, confused. "What do you mean?"
I gestured toward the house. "This house—it's ours, Pee. The deed is in both our names. This is your home now. No more orphanage. Just you and me."
Tears welled up in his eyes as he stared at me. "I don't need a house," he said, his voice trembling. "Anywhere you are is already home for me."
His words hit me straight in the chest. Before I could respond, he threw his arms around me, holding me so tightly it felt like his heart was trying to merge with mine. In that moment, our hearts beat as one.
I pulled back just enough to cup his face, wiping the tears from his cheeks. "Welcome home, my pretty boy," I said softly.
He smiled through his tears, then surprised me by kissing both my cheeks and my forehead. "Thank you," he whispered, his voice barely audible.
I couldn't resist hugging him again, this time pressing a long kiss to his forehead. His warmth, his scent, his everything—it was all I needed.
We stepped inside, and I showed him around the house. "This is the living room," I said, gesturing to the cozy space. "Here's the kitchen, and this is where you can set up your drawing stuff."
His eyes lit up when I showed him the art space I'd created just for him. "You did this for me?" he asked, his voice full of awe.
"Of course," I replied. "You deserve it."
Finally, I led him to the master bedroom. "And this," I said with a teasing grin, "is where we'll be sleeping."
His cheeks turned bright red as he looked at the large bed. "Wait… what about my room?" he asked, looking genuinely flustered.
I shrugged, feigning innocence. "It doesn't have a bed yet."
He stared at me, his hands flailing slightly. "But… but what if we have visitors? Where will they sleep?"
I laughed softly, pulling him close. "For now, Pee, we're not having any visitors. So, it's just us. Unless you don't want to share a bed with me…"
He shook his head vigorously, his face even redder. "No! It's not that…"
I smirked and ruffled his hair. "Good. Then it's settled."
He let out a nervous laugh, still blushing but smiling all the same. This was home now, and I knew—deep down—that nothing would ever separate us again.
