The Rebirth Of A Dragon

Chapter 143: Chapter 132 - "The First Step"

Hiccup's Point of View

We landed as one-Luna and I-side by side on the stone pillar where Astrid waited, our wings folding as our bodies shifted into our hybrid forms. The battlefield below still smoldered from the final breath of the Green Death. Her bloated carcass lay ruptured in the crater of her broken nest, scales torn, wings melted, jaw dislocated from the force of our attack.

The world was quieter now.

No more screams. No more roars. Just the wind-soft, cautious-blowing through ash and ruin.

Then Astrid moved.

She leapt before I even spoke a word, her body crashing into mine as laughter spilled from her lips like wildfire through frost. Her arms wrapped around my neck, legs around my waist. Her lips crashed against mine-hot, breathless, victorious.

"You did it," she whispered against my mouth, a grin in her voice. "You actually did it."

Before I could answer, she pushed from my arms and flung herself into Luna's. She caught her with ease, pulling her close, and Astrid wasted no time in kissing her just as fiercely. The sight made something curl deep in my chest-something territorial, satisfied, and possessive all at once.

Astrid pulled back, cheeks flushed, eyes wild.

"What now?" she asked. "The Queen is dead. What's left? What do we do now?"

I tilted my head slightly, letting my eyes drift toward the battlefield where two figures were still pinned down-one by the throat, the other by the arms-by the dragons of my command.

Stoick and Gobber.

Still alive.

Still clinging to their fading relevance.

I turned my gaze back to Astrid and Luna, letting my voice carry low and cold.

"For now," I said, "we get rid of the insects crawling in our shadow."

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't have to.

"Take them," I said to the dragons restraining them. "Deliver them to the last ship. And hurry and get them out of my sight."

The dragons obeyed instantly, talons digging in as they lifted both men from the rocks with brutal ease. Stoick struggled for a moment, teeth clenched, but even he knew resistance was useless now.

I stepped forward, just enough to let my voice follow them as they rose into the sky.

"And before you even think of speaking a word-know this: if I hear so much as a whisper about what I've become... if even one soul in Berk speaks of me shedding my humanity... I'll burn your pathetic island to the ground. I'll raze every home, every memory, every name. Berk is no longer useful to me. I took what I needed. You no longer have a place in my world."

They didn't answer.

Of course they didn't.

What could they say to the monster their failure helped create?

They just nodded. Silent. Broken.

Good.

I watched as they were flown toward the sea, toward the last remaining ship that hadn't been obliterated by the Queen's dying thrash. They would live-but they would live knowing they were nothing more than spared pests. And only because I let them be.

Not because of mercy.

But because they were no longer worth killing.

Astrid stepped beside me, her fingers brushing mine.

Behind her, Luna's tail curled around us loosely as she looked up.

"They'll run back to Berk with their tails between their legs," Astrid said. "Let them."

"They're not the ones that matter anymore," I said simply.

Then, as if summoned by fate itself, Luna turned her eyes skyward. I followed her gaze.

And I smiled.

Hundreds of dragons, once enslaved to the Queen, now flew through the clouds in formation-led by my dragons in the lead. My vanguard guided the freed dragons like shepherds herding fire across the sky, bringing them home.

To us.

To our rule.

To our future.

Astrid's voice turned soft as she watched them come in waves.

"Our flock... it's going to grow into quite the number, my love."

"It already has," I murmured.

And this... this was only the beginning.

The Queen had never scared me. She was powerful, yes-but weak compared to the things I'd seen. The worlds I remembered. She was nothing more than a first step. A foundation. A sacrifice.

And now she was gone.

Burnt. Broken. Forgotten.

While we-Luna, Astrid, and I-stood at the edge of something far greater than her.

Something worthy of us.

Freya's Point of View

Barf and Belch shrieked as I scrambled onto their back, both heads turning in opposite directions as I tugged one of their horns in play.

"Hold still!" I laughed, standing in the saddle like I was surfing a wave of dragon hide. "You're supposed to fall over when I hit you!"

They didn't.

Instead, they spun.

I squealed as they twisted in place, both heads yapping nonsense at each other like always while I clung to their necks with wide, delighted eyes. Off to the side, Meatlug blinked one sleepy eye before snorting and settling back into her nap. Hookfang flicked his tail near the water, watching us with lazy disinterest-but even he didn't stop me. He never did. Not anymore.

The cove was ours. Safe. Warm. Guarded.

At least, it had been quiet.

Until the wind changed.

I froze mid-spin as a low hum rolled across the sky, so deep I felt it in my chest.

Barf and Belch stopped too-both heads perking up at once.

Then came the shadows.

Not just one. Not two. But dozens. Hundreds. The sky was full of wings-wide, leathery, powerful-and I felt the ground tremble beneath my bare feet as I jumped off the saddle and stared upward.

Dragons.

So many dragons.

Colors I'd never seen before. Shapes that didn't have names. And right at the front, gliding lower, faster, more controlled than all the rest-

I saw them.

Papa. Mama. Mama Astrid.

They soared together like stars breaking through a storm. Papa and Mama flew side by side, their wings slicing through the wind with perfect synchronicity. And behind them, riding on Stormfly, was Mama Astrid-her hair trailing like flame, her face fierce and glowing.

My heart leapt into my throat.

"Papa!" I screamed, already running. "Mama! Mama Astrid!"

They heard me.

All three of them dipped lower.

The moment they landed, I didn't hesitate. I sprinted across the stone, ignoring the heat from where dragons had scorched it moments before. My legs burned, but I didn't care. Nothing mattered except getting to them.

Papa opened his arms as I flung myself at him.

He caught me like he always did-with strength, with warmth, with a low laugh that made the world feel safe.

"I missed you!" I gasped into his chest. "I missed you so much!"

Mama was there in seconds, curling one arm around my back, her head resting briefly against mine. Then Mama Astrid dropped off Stormfly and wrapped us all in her arms. We stood there like that, tangled up in each other, like the whole world had come home.

I pulled back just enough to look up at Papa.

"Did you do it?" I asked. "Is it over? Is she gone?"

He didn't say anything right away.

Just smiled.

Then gently, his hand lifted my chin and turned my gaze upward.

I followed it.

And gasped.

The sky had turned black-but not with storm clouds. With dragons.

Hundreds of them. Pouring in through the clouds like a living tide, their wings beating in perfect rhythm. At the head of it all flew Papa's vanguard-his elite. They didn't look like soldiers anymore. They looked like kings and queens of the air, leading their kin home.

They began to land-wings folding, claws digging into the stone and sand. Some circled the cliffs, others perched on ledges. The cove was filling up fast.

And then...

One by one...

They bowed.

To us.

Every dragon who landed lowered their head. Even Barf and Belch stilled, both heads ducking respectfully. Meatlug huffed as she slowly shifted into a bow of her own. Hookfang growled once before lowering himself too.

I didn't know what to say.

So I just stared.

Because I understood, deep down, that this was bigger than a fight. Bigger than the Queen. Bigger than Berk.

This was the beginning of something new.

The dragons rose again as one-and let out a roar that shook the sky. It wasn't wild or angry. It was proud. Free. It echoed off the cliffs and across the water, strong enough to make my bones tremble.

And I stood there, held in my family's arms, knowing I was right where I belonged.

Hiccup's Point of View

The roar still echoed when I looked down at her.

Freya-pressed between Luna and me, with Astrid's arms curled around her back-stared up at the sky with wide, shining eyes. The light of the fire reflected in her smile.

Around us, dragons knelt.

Behind us, the ashes of a tyrant still smoldered.

And ahead...

A world unclaimed.

I exhaled once, low and calm, as I watched the vanguard lead the last wave of dragons in.

"This is only the beginning," I said under my breath.

Then I smiled, cold and hungry.

"There's a bigger world out there to claim."

And we would take it.

Together.
