Chapter 81: 81: Areas Where You Should Not Interfere
"Father, Mother, I'm back with my brother Kevin!"
In the majestic and solemn Silver Hall, Balder's jubilant voice echoed, accompanied by her bounding steps as she ran in, hand-in-hand with Kevin.
Odin, Loki, Frigga, and the other gods seated in the hall turned to the source of the interruption, their expressions shifting from anticipation to surprise. The carefully maintained air of gravitas dissolved into thin air.
The Valkyries, who had followed protocol to maintain a dignified presence, found themselves stifling laughter as their lips twitched at Balder's unrestrained joy.
"Frigga..." Odin muttered helplessly, his single eye glancing at his wife seated beside him.
Frigga sighed, rose gracefully, and descended from her throne. She took Balder by the hand, pulling her aside and instructing her to behave.
Meanwhile, Kevin straightened his tunic, took a breath, and performed a proper salute to the gods. "Great God Odin, Lord Loki, Lady Frigga, and all present—greetings."
Behind him, the group entered the hall in measured steps. Tyr, Shaki, and Skadi joined Kevin at the forefront, while Idun, who had returned earlier, emerged from the shadows with a radiant smile. She nodded to Kevin and stood beside him.
The Valkyries, including Slude, saluted Odin and then filed to their designated positions.
Shaki's gaze swept over the hall before settling on Loki. His massive frame bristled with barely contained anger. "Loki," he growled, his voice cutting through the air like a blade, "what is the meaning of this? Have you forgotten the agreement you made with me?!"
His tone caused some of the more hot-blooded Valkyries to stiffen. A few prepared to chastise the giant for his insolence, but Odin raised a hand, motioning for restraint.
"I haven't forgotten," Loki replied with his characteristic smirk, his voice smooth as silk. "Our agreement was to ensure that Skadi would join the Aesir. That condition has been fulfilled."
"That's not all!" Shaki snapped. He was about to launch into a tirade when Kevin stepped forward.
"Master Shaki," Kevin interjected calmly, "I'd like to suggest something else. Why don't you stay here in Asgard as well?"
Shaki's eyes widened as his face darkened. "You want me—a warrior of the giants—to join the Aesir? That's impossible!" He bellowed, his voice resonating through the hall. He clenched his fists, his knuckles cracking audibly. "I am Shaki, a proud warrior of the Jotunheim giants!"
Before Shaki could continue, Kevin tilted his head, a faint smile playing on his lips. "With all due respect, Master Shaki, the mountain giant Shaki is dead."
The giant's breath hitched. He glared at Kevin, confusion and anger warring in his expression. "You're spouting nonsense! I'm standing right here!"
Kevin's gaze was steady as he gestured around the hall, at the Valkyries who had accompanied him, at Tyr, and finally at Skadi, whose pained expression told a deeper truth.
"The warrior of Jotunheim, the mountain giant Shaki, died last night," Kevin said softly but firmly. "He died so that his daughter, Skadi, could have a brighter future."
The realization dawned on Shaki as he took in his daughter's face. Slowly, the fury drained from him, replaced by an emptiness he hadn't felt before.
Kevin turned to Odin, bowing deeply. "Great God Odin, what happens next?"
Odin's stern face softened slightly. He stroked his long white beard and nodded. "The next step has already been arranged."
Kevin exhaled in relief but tensed when Odin fixed his one good eye on him. "Child," Odin said, his voice resonant with authority, "you have exceeded all expectations. You've proven yourself worthy of Scathach's tutelage—and worthy of being called my half-apprentice."
Kevin flinched, his face scrunching in exasperation. First Balder's younger brother, now Scathach's half-apprentice? Just how many titles are they going to pile on me?!
"Furthermore," Loki chimed in, his smile sharp, "a deep-sea giant has arrived in Jotunheim. His testimony will ensure the Frost Giants don't declare war over Shaki's 'death.'"
Odin nodded in agreement. "Even if they wanted to act, the Frost Giants wouldn't dare. With Thor alive, war isn't a feasible option. Besides," he added, glancing at Shaki, "you, Shaki, were never truly safe in Jotunheim. Your daughter's divinity made her a target, and your presence was a liability."
Shaki remained silent, but his clenched fists trembled slightly.
Shaki finally turned to Kevin. "You," he began, his voice heavy with emotion, "what exactly have you done? How did this... happen?"
Kevin offered a small, weary smile. "I didn't do much. I simply found the existing story unworthy. So, I adjusted it a little."
"You..." Shaki trailed off, the weight of Kevin's actions sinking in.
Kevin turned back to Odin and bowed deeply. "Great God Odin, I, Kevin, the son of Luger from the Erin continent, express my deepest gratitude for your guidance and trust."
Odin's lips quirked in a faint smile. "To be precise, Kevin, you've brought this to fruition yourself. You devised the plan, 'killed' the mountain giant Shaki, and willingly made yourself the Frost Giants' enemy. Even Tyr and the Valkyries followed you of their own accord.
"Let me ask you, Kevin—do you think it was worth it? You could have completed this trial easily. Instead, you complicated it to this extent, ensuring you would bear the hatred of the Frost Giants. Was it worth it?"
All eyes turned to Kevin, curious about his answer.
Kevin rubbed the back of his neck, smiling wryly. "Looking back, I can't believe I actually did it. If it happened again, I might not dare to. After all, I'm only human."
He sighed, his smile turning rueful. "To be honest, this was never something I should have been involved in."
