Chapter 84: 84: Becoming Famous
"Brother... brother!"
Balder took a deep breath, elongating her voice with mock exasperation as she took a few steps forward to Kevin and pulled him into her embrace. Her arms wrapped around him tightly, but not without adding a pinch to his cheek, making him wince slightly.
"Do you have any idea how much trouble you've caused?" she said, her voice half-chiding, half-affectionate. "When Father Ruger asked me to look after you, I thought it was just a formality. But now..." She sighed dramatically, giving his cheek one more tweak. "Now I know I'll need to watch you like a hawk. You're a troublemaker, Kevin!"
Kevin winced under her grasp, his eyes darting around the room. He noticed the amused smiles on the faces of some gods and Valkyries as they watched his predicament. Feeling wronged, he tried to defend himself.
"I didn't mean for things to get so... complicated," he muttered. "I was just trying to help!"
"Help?" Balder raised an eyebrow, her skepticism plain.
Before Kevin could protest further, he turned his attention to Shaki, hoping to redirect the focus. "Lord Shaki," Kevin began, his voice steady, "what do you think of everything now?"
Shaki, the mountain giant, let out a weary sigh. His once stern expression softened slightly as he reached out and placed a reassuring hand on his daughter Skadi's head. His gaze shifted back to Kevin, filled with a mix of astonishment and reluctant admiration.
"You've already done all this," Shaki said, his tone carrying the weight of resignation. "Do I even have the right to refuse at this point?"
"Father!" Skadi exclaimed, her voice filled with relief.
Shaki nodded gently to his daughter before turning back to Kevin. "But tell me, Kevin, what drives you to go to such lengths? Surely this isn't just about the trial."
Kevin paused, his gaze thoughtful. A faint smile crossed his lips before he replied, "Didn't I tell you from the beginning? I just don't like how the story was going. I was right in the middle of it, so I figured... why not try to change it?"
Shaki regarded Kevin in silence, processing his words. He recalled Kevin's earlier comment about the story being "tasteless." For a moment, he was lost in thought.
But Kevin's motivations weren't as simple as he made them seem. Deep down, he knew there were other reasons driving his actions—reasons he couldn't openly share in the Silver Hall.
Kevin wasn't just trying to change Shaki's fate. He was testing the boundaries of his own influence. Could he, a man without destiny, defy the will of the gods? Could he rewrite a fate that seemed set in stone?
These were questions Kevin had been grappling with since his failure to save Cu Chulainn. The events surrounding Shaki and Skadi were, in a way, Kevin's experiment—a chance to prove that fate wasn't immutable.
And in the end, his gamble had paid off.
In the presence of Odin, Loki, and the other gods, Shaki swore an oath. He pledged never to harm the gods of Asgard and to dedicate himself to protecting the Eternal Garden and Fenrir, the earth-shaking demon wolf.
As the ceremony concluded, Loki stepped forward to finalize the life contract between Kevin and Skadi. A faint red glow surrounded Kevin's wrist, forming a magical seal that symbolized the bond. A matching mark appeared on Skadi's hand, shimmering softly in the divine light.
"You're really going through with this," Shaki muttered, shaking his head in disbelief.
Kevin grinned. "It's not so bad. Think of it as insurance."
Balder, who had been watching the proceedings closely, crossed her arms and pouted. "You gave too much, Kevin," she said, her tone a mixture of concern and frustration. "I don't like it."
Kevin scratched the back of his head sheepishly, unsure of how to respond.
Meanwhile, Loki handed Shaki the authority to dissolve the contract. The mountain giant hesitated, his fingers hovering over the glowing mark on Kevin's wrist. For a brief moment, it seemed like he might release Kevin from the bond, but he stopped himself.
Shaki glanced at his daughter, who was gazing at Kevin with a look of gratitude and... something else he couldn't quite place.
"Never mind," Shaki said, stepping back.
While the gods of Asgard celebrated Kevin's success, events were unfolding in Jotunheim. The Frost Giant King had issued a decree, spreading news of Shaki's "death" at Kevin's hands across the Nine Realms.
Wanted posters bearing Kevin's name and likeness began appearing in every corner of the World Tree. The reward for his capture was substantial, drawing the attention of giants, elves, dwarves, and humans alike.
Within days, Kevin's name became infamous. He was no longer just the "Son of Light" or the "Man of Miracles." He was now a wanted man in the eyes of Jotunheim.
As the gods discussed the implications of Kevin's newfound notoriety, Freya, the goddess of beauty, leaned toward him with a teasing smile.
"You're quite the celebrity now, aren't you?" she said, her tone dripping with amusement.
Kevin groaned. "Not exactly the kind of fame I was hoping for."
Thor clapped him on the back, nearly knocking him over. "You're making history, lad! First human to earn a spot on the Frost Giants' hit list. That's no small feat!"
Kevin rubbed his temples, already dreading the challenges that lay ahead.
Despite the chaos, Kevin felt a sense of satisfaction. He had achieved what he set out to do, forging a new path for Shaki and Skadi while proving that even fate could be challenged.
As he stood amidst the gods, with Skadi and Shaki by his side, Kevin realized that his journey was far from over. The Nine Realms were vast, and his actions had set wheels in motion that could not be undone.
For better or worse, Kevin was now a part of the story—one that was still being written.
And as the gods laughed and conversed around him, Kevin couldn't help but smile. After all, he had always believed in miracles.
