Chapter 89: 89: Taking in a Disciple
Gunmanship? Runes?
As soon as Skadi repeated these words, even Idun realized what Kevin was thinking. After all, they all knew that Kevin had a master who bore an uncanny resemblance to Skadi.
Kevin, under the intense gazes of the group, let out a nervous chuckle, his face slightly pale. "Heh, just kidding! You know, a little joke to lighten the mood. No need to take it seriously!"
"No," Idun interjected, her tone decisive. "Let's not brush this off. Learning runes might be good for Skadi. After all, runes represent one of the purest forms of magic.
If Skadi learns how to use them, it would be a huge step toward fully mastering her own powers."
She paused, giving Kevin a curious look. "But... can you actually teach her?"
Kevin scratched his head, his confidence wavering. The runes were originally discovered by Odin and later passed on to Scathach, who had taught them to Kevin.
"Well... I don't think it should be a big problem," Kevin replied hesitantly, his gaze darting toward Slude, who also had knowledge of runes. "Besides, my master, Scathach, never said I couldn't teach them to others."
The group exchanged thoughtful glances. Kevin's reasoning made sense. Even if Odin were to be consulted, he would likely approve, given his generosity in sharing the secrets of runes with others.
"And what about spearmanship?" Skadi tilted her head slightly, a playful smile tugging at her lips. "Do you plan to teach me that too? Should I... start calling you Master?"
The word "Master" hung in the air, sending shivers down Kevin's spine. Even Neil, perched on his shoulder, visibly quivered.
Skadi's uncanny resemblance to Scathach only amplified the eeriness of the situation.
"Kevin! Teach her! You have to teach her!" Neil squawked excitedly, her wings flapping in rhythm with her words.
For the first time, both man and bird found themselves united in their shared mix of awe and terror.
Slude and Idun, watching from the sidelines, exchanged puzzled glances. Having never met Scathach, they couldn't fathom the internal turmoil playing out within Kevin and Neil.
Meanwhile, Skadi raised an eyebrow, noticing the peculiar reactions of her audience. A sly smile crept across her face as she rolled her eyes upward in contemplation.
Suddenly, she reached up and pulled at the accessory holding her ponytail in place. Her long, flowing hair cascaded down, gradually darkening from a soft lavender hue to a rich, crimson red.
Skadi spun gracefully, her newly transformed hair trailing behind her like a fiery ribbon. The transformation altered not only her appearance but her entire demeanor.
The once lively and cheerful Skadi now exuded an aura of cool detachment, her expression a perfect blend of sharpness and tenderness.
She turned to Kevin, her lips curving into a smirk. Then, with a voice as cold as ice but tinged with honeyed affection, she spoke:
"What do you think of this... Kevin?" she paused, her tone shifting. "No, that's not right."
Kevin, frozen in place, stared at her with wide eyes and a dropped jaw, unable to form coherent thoughts.
Skadi leaned closer, her crimson hair framing her face as she delivered the final blow.
"Master."
The single word sent shockwaves through the group.
Neil was the first to break. She clutched her head dramatically and let out a piercing scream. "Ahhh!"
Her tiny body toppled over, and she fainted on Kevin's shoulder.
Kevin, his legs trembling, threw his hands into the air in surrender. "I give up! I'm done! Skadi, change back! Please, for the love of the gods, change back!
I was wrong! I take it all back! Stop tormenting me! And whoever taught her that spell, show yourself! I won't hit you... I promise!"
Idun and Slude exchanged glances before bursting into laughter. Meanwhile, Skadi, unable to contain her amusement, doubled over, clutching her stomach as peals of laughter spilled from her lips.
"Alright, alright, no more tricks," Skadi said finally, wiping a tear from the corner of her eye. She murmured another incantation, restoring her hair to its original lavender hue and tying it back into a ponytail.
Once her transformation was complete, she turned to Kevin with a playful smile and extended her hand. "Please guide me well in the future, Master."
Kevin sighed, his shoulders slumping in defeat. "Call me Kevin. Just Kevin."
After spending some time chatting with Idun in the Eternal Garden, Kevin and the group decided to head to their final destination for the day: Fenrir's residence.
As they prepared to leave, Idun gently stopped Kevin, gesturing for Slude, Skadi, and Neil to go ahead.
"Kevin," Idun began, her gaze soft as she watched Skadi walk ahead, chatting animatedly with the others. "She's been so much happier recently. That's all thanks to you."
Kevin tilted his head. "Me? I don't think I've done anything special."
Idun shook her head with a gentle smile. "When I first met her, I wanted so badly to help her, but I knew I couldn't.
You... you gave her something no one else could. You gave her hope. You gave her a reason to smile again."
Kevin was silent for a moment before he smiled faintly. "I think you're giving me too much credit. I'm just an outsider who stumbled into her story.
If anything, it was her own courage and strength that led her here."
Idun studied Kevin for a long moment, her smile tinged with something unspoken. "Maybe so," she murmured. "But I have a feeling that your story... is going to be very, very interesting."
Kevin blinked, surprised by her words. Before he could respond, Idun turned and joined the others, leaving him standing alone in the Eternal Garden, her words lingering in his mind.
