Chapter 98: 98: Dragon Slayer
Ever since Loki and Freya orchestrated their scheme, things had been set into motion. Freya even found time to explain the situation in detail to Balder, Hoder, and Skadi, ensuring they understood what lay ahead.
A week passed quietly.
Meanwhile, the divine paper written by Little Bird Neil arrived on the continent of Irene. Transmitted through sunlight, it reached the hands of Ruger, the god of light and the sun.
As Ruger strolled along the corridors of his palace, he suddenly paused, sensing something. Stretching out his hand, he plucked the divine paper from a beam of sunlight.
"That girl Neil," Ruger muttered with a faint smile as he examined the paper. "I thought she'd forgotten her duty."
Instead of reading it immediately, Ruger headed to the courtyard of eternal spring. There, he ordered his servants to prepare a table, chairs, tea, and cakes. Seated comfortably under the bright sunlight, he finally unfolded the paper.
"Let's see what my restless child has been up to in Asgard," Ruger said with a chuckle as he sipped the tea Kevin had once brewed for him.
An hour passed as Ruger read the paper—not once, but three times. He even cross-referenced it with Neil's previous reports. Only then did he sit back, shaking his head with a rueful smile.
"Kevin is... quite the troublemaker."
The tales of the giant wolf tamer, the giant-slaying hero, the gods' favor, and the unlikely friendship with Fenrir (now affectionately nicknamed "Husky") were all laid out in detail. Not to mention the introduction of Skadi, whose name now resounded throughout the Nine Realms.
"No!" Ruger stood abruptly, his expression serious. "This cannot remain a secret. Such heroic deeds must be shared!"
After pacing for a moment, Ruger made up his mind. He ordered his servants to prepare dozens of sheets of magical paper. Copying Neil's report word for word, he edited out certain sensitive details and created multiple versions of the story.
By the time Ruger was finished, the sun hung high in the sky. He instructed his servants to deliver the papers to his divine friends and Scathach.
As a final touch, Ruger penned a letter to Neil. He instructed her to submit reports monthly—regardless of whether she had news about Kevin or not. Even lighthearted anecdotes would suffice.
If Kevin were aware of Ruger's actions, he'd undoubtedly groan in exasperation. Little Bird Neil's reports were effectively being turned into the Nine Realms' first newspaper.
Unaware of this divine dissemination of his exploits, Kevin was in Midgard, walking through a dense forest. Over the past week, he and Slude had been ambushed by bandits no less than thirteen times.
Today, however, under the secret guidance of the gods, Kevin encountered someone remarkable.
"Do you need help?"
The voice came from a tall, silver-haired man clad in armor and carrying a massive sword on his back. He approached Kevin and Slude, who were surrounded by a group of scruffy bandits.
The man's name was Siegfried.
Kevin, dressed in light black clothes gifted by Balder, might easily have been mistaken for a nobleman. Slude, with her white cloak covering her golden hair, couldn't conceal her striking beauty and poise. It was no surprise they attracted trouble.
"Where did this idiot come from?" snarled the bandit leader, waving his blade at Siegfried. "Get lost, or I'll kill you too!"
Siegfried ignored the threat, his emerald eyes fixed on Kevin and Slude. "Do you need my help?" he asked again, his tone calm.
Slude glanced at Siegfried but then turned to Kevin, noticing his peculiar expression. "What's wrong?" she asked.
"My magic eyes activated," Kevin murmured, still staring at Siegfried.
Slude blinked in surprise. "Magic eyes?"
Kevin nodded. His eyes briefly sparkled like stars before returning to normal.
"Target detected: Dragon Slayer Siegfried. Would you like to record and mark this individual?"
The familiar notification rang in Kevin's mind, but this time, the magic eyes didn't act automatically.
"What are you two mumbling about?" the bandit leader growled, irritation mounting. "Third and fourth, kill the man and take the woman! Wait—" He paused, eyeing Kevin closely. "Don't kill the man. He's got fine skin—probably worth a fortune if we sell him!"
Slude laughed softly. "At least these bandits are practical. Unlike the last ones who wanted to take you to bed."
Kevin rolled his eyes at her.
Even Siegfried frowned slightly, feeling that Kevin and Slude's nonchalant attitude didn't match the situation.
"Excuse me," Siegfried interjected again, his voice louder. "Do you need my help?"
Kevin finally looked at Siegfried and smiled faintly. Raising his hands, he made a quick gesture in the air.
"Leave," he said softly.
The bandits' eyes glazed over, their weapons dropping to their sides. Without a word, they turned and walked away, disappearing into the forest.
Siegfried watched the strange scene unfold, his expression stoic. "It seems I wasn't needed after all," he said, turning to leave.
"Wait," Kevin called after him. "Thank you for offering your help. My name is Kevin, and this is my maid, Slude. May I ask your name?"
"Maid?" Siegfried repeated, unfamiliar with the term.
"Yes," Kevin replied with a bright smile, ignoring Slude's smirk. "It means family. It's what we call it where I'm from."
Siegfried tilted his head, then nodded. "My name is Siegfried."
Slude's eyes widened. "Siegfried? The prince of the Netherlands who's hunting the dragon Fafnir?"
Siegfried's stoic demeanor faltered slightly. "Yes."
Slude's surprise was evident. As a Valkyrie, she had heard of Siegfried's quest to slay Fafnir and claim the Rhinegold.
Kevin observed their interaction, his mind whirring. "Siegfried," he murmured, "the dragon slayer..."
After a brief exchange, Siegfried departed, but Kevin couldn't shake the encounter from his mind.
When night fell, Kevin and Slude found Siegfried again, sitting by a fire.
"We meet again," Kevin said with a grin.
Siegfried, hand on the hilt of his sword, relaxed slightly when he saw who it was. "You again?"
"Yes," Kevin replied, his eyes briefly glowing as he activated his magic eyes. This time, the connection was subtle but immediate. Siegfried felt an inexplicable warmth toward Kevin, his guard lowering further.
"May we share your fire?" Kevin asked.
Siegfried hesitated, then nodded. "You may."
With that, Kevin and Slude settled by the fire, their fates entwined with the legendary dragon slayer.
