14: Believe in Science!
“Dead?”
Ye Xing didn’t react immediately, but when she came to her senses, she started to stammer.
“You mean… the kind where the body has lost all signs of life?”
“Yes.”
“Oh…” Ye Xing’s eyes widened, her pupils shaking, “So you’re really a ghost now?!”
“I don’t know either, probably.”
Aipal floated back and forth leisurely in the air above the room, like a white feather, giving the impression of indifference, seemingly unconcerned about her own state.
“Hmm…”
Once the topic of death came up, Ye Xing’s mood inexplicably became downcast.
“How long have you been like this?”
“I’ve forgotten, but I remember that in the year I died, I had just turned sixteen. By now, my body has probably turned to ash.”
“Sixteen? That’s dying young! What exactly happened?”
“I think I died from an illness.”
Aipal’s expression became a bit troubled, as if recalling past events.
As she reminisced, the thin ahoge on her head swayed back and forth like seaweed, making one want to pluck it off.
Those past events were too distant.
All the memories were blurred.
She had even forgotten in which year she died, and her memories of family and friends were a complete blank.
The only thing she remembered was years of lonely wandering after becoming a ghost.
Seeing Aipal fall into contemplation, without any movement, Ye Xing’s body gradually began to relax.
“A sixteen-year-old girl? Adding these years, she’s probably older than me…” Ye Xing muttered.
Though her voice was soft, Aipal, lost in thought, heard it.
“No way! I’m forever sixteen, not an old lady! And definitely not a grandmother!”
Aipal angrily flailed her arms, like a bristling cat, trying to express her anger. But combined with her peculiar spiritual form and delicate features, Ye Xing could only find her a bit cute.
Well, she didn’t seem so scared anymore.
A cute ghost girl wasn’t so bad.
“Alright, alright, let’s say you’re sixteen.”
“Why do I feel like you’re just placating me?”
Aipal pouted slightly, somewhat dissatisfied.
She still seemed quite girlish.
Then Aipal’s expression turned curious, and she floated in front of Ye Xing, staring at her.
“Umm…”
Ye Xing didn’t reach out to stop her.
Although she was still a bit timid at heart, she no longer had an extreme reaction.
After being stared at by Aipal to the point where her scalp tingled, Ye Xing couldn’t help but take a step back.
“What… what are you staring at me for?”
“What’s your name?”
“Why are you asking that?”
“I just want to get to know you. Tell me, please~”
“Ye Xing… my name is Ye Xing.”
Hearing this, Aipal nodded and silently repeated the name “Ye Xing” several times, seemingly trying hard to remember it.
“I’ve remembered it. My name is Aipal. Can I live here with you from now on?”
“Huh?” Ye Xing was a bit stunned.
Living with a ghost girl seemed a bit problematic no matter how you looked at it.
If Aipal was a ghost, wouldn’t this small cottage become a haunted house?
Just thinking about it was a bit creepy. She probably wouldn’t be able to sleep well.
“No, absolutely not.”
Ye Xing refused without even thinking about it.
It was so nice to slack off alone.
Even though she was often alone at home, she already had Ye Lan.
This small family only had room for two bodies.
That is, herself.
She didn’t want any strange characters moving in.
“Not allowed…?” The ahoge on Aipal’s head drooped, as if losing all vitality.
“That’s right.” Ye Xing’s will was firm.
Aipal still wanted to try to persuade her.
“I don’t need to eat, or sleep, and I won’t take up space. Really, is it still not okay?”
“No way.”
“Boo-hoo…”
Aipal’s spiritual form seemed to collapse like a deflated slime, sliding onto the floor.
“I’m so sad…”
Ye Xing sat back on the bed, curling up her body, her white silk-clad legs bent against her chest, arms hugging her knees, resting her snow-white face on her knees, her crimson eyes fixed on Aipal’s figure.
“Can you tell me why you want to live here?”
“Because I’m curious…” Aipal answered in an ethereal voice.
“Curious?”
“Yes, I’ve wandered for so long, and this is the first time I’ve met someone who can see me. So I want to be closer to you, to observe you at all times, to uncover your special qualities…”
“Oh…”
Ye Xing slightly parted her cherry lips, then closed them again. After a moment of silence, she began to mutter softly.
“Why does that sound a bit perverted…”
“I’m a normal person!” Aipal tried to salvage her reputation, her ahoge cooperatively protesting.
“Normal people don’t casually intrude into others’ rooms to play pranks.”
Ye Xing’s gaze was resentful.
She was still upset about Aipal scaring her earlier.
“Umm… I’m sorry. It’s because I was so bored. It took me a long time in a daze to find this kind of fun. I don’t want to go back to those days when I felt like I was going to disappear.”
“Then why not just reincarnate quickly, start a new life as a human? I really don’t know how a mischievous ghost like you hasn’t been caught by the ghost officials yet.”
“You should believe in science. What you’re saying is all feudal superstition. There’s no scientific basis for monsters, ghosts, and spirits!”
Aipal forcefully patted the floor several times, but there was no sound at all.
“Hmm… I don’t think you’re in a position to say these things.” Ye Xing was speechless.
Wasn’t it strange for a ghost to talk about believing in science?
“Even if I’ve become a ghost, I still believe in science…”
Aipal’s voice gradually grew quieter, until she stopped speaking altogether.
Her mood seemed very low.
It appeared that Ye Xing’s refusal was indeed quite a blow to her.
Ye Xing silently gazed at her for a while, and eventually softened.
She had experienced the feeling of being alone, and it was indeed very unpleasant, doing everything in a daze.
Not to mention Aipal, whom no one could see.
She seemed not to exist in this world.
No one on this earth cared about her, no one remembered her, and there was no chance of receiving help from kind people. She was truly isolated and helpless.
It was hard to imagine how she had wandered for such a long time.
However, sympathy was one thing, but the bottom line in her heart couldn’t be crossed.
Helping people should be done within certain limits; this was Ye Xing’s principle.
“Umm… let’s do this. I agree to let you visit my home.”
“Really!”
Aipal flashed over in an instant, the ahoge on her head bouncing up and down, extremely excited.
Ye Xing was so startled that she couldn’t maintain her posture of hugging her knees and fell backward.
“Don’t get too excited. This doesn’t mean you can live here. I’m just agreeing to let you come over to play. So, don’t disturb me when I’m resting or sleeping, and you can’t always hang around my place. Do you understand?”
“Yes, this is good enough!”
For Aipal, being able to see Ye Xing often and talk to her was already very good.
At worst, she could just stay active in this area and come to chat with Ye Xing at certain times.
The simple-minded ghost girl had already made plans for the future.
