The chamber trembled as Crocodile staggered backward, his eyes narrowing at Rael with growing uncertainty. The sound of combat still echoed through the underground caverns—metal clashing, rebels shouting, gunfire ringing from Kaya's pistol—but in this moment, Crocodile heard only his own shallow breath.
He stared at his hand, smoke drifting from his fingertips where Rael had grabbed him.
"…You touched me," Crocodile muttered. "That's impossible."
Rael rolled his neck, his golden eyes glowing slightly in the dusty gloom. "Logia users… hard to hit. But not impossible."
Crocodile clenched his jaw. "You're not from the New World. You're not a pirate. You're not a Marine. And yet…"
Rael's expression didn't change. But inwardly, he was still processing it.
That Vice Admiral—strong but ultimately predictable—had used something during their fight that resonated with him. A ripple in the air. A pressure in his strikes. A force that went beyond flesh and armor.
Haki. That's what this world called it.
And after watching the Vice Admiral closely, after that battle, Rael tried mimicking it in silence. Night after night in the desert, hands wrapped in focus, pushing his will into his strikes. His instincts, honed over decades of war in another world, told him it was like pressing his essence—his spirit—into his blows.
And it worked.
Rael smirked.
"Easy to learn," he thought.
If the Vice Admiral who had spent decades perfecting the technique could hear that, he'd be spitting blood and screaming at the heavens.
Crocodile took a step back, trying to regain control of the situation. If this bastard knows Haki... then he's not just strong—he's a natural disaster waiting to happen.
Rael raised his hand. The faint shimmer of Haki flickered across his knuckles, invisible to most, but Crocodile's trained eye caught it.
He wasn't dealing with a fool or a brute.
He was facing a man who, if left unchecked, could challenge emperors.
"I'll admit," Crocodile growled, "you're not what I expected."
He extended his left arm.
"But let's see how well your fancy tricks hold up… against this!"
The ground trembled as Crocodile slammed his palm into the sand-covered floor.
"Ground Death!"
The moisture in the room vanished instantly. Cracks raced across the stone as the earth dried and split. A wave of sand surged outward from Crocodile, tearing through the chamber like a tidal wave of razor blades and dust.
"MOVE!" Kaya shouted, grabbing Vivi and ducking behind a pillar.
Rael didn't move.
The sand rushed toward him with crushing force—and swallowed him whole.
"Rael!" Kaya screamed.
"Damn it, no!" Vivi's eyes widened as the storm of sand raged.
Crocodile laughed. "Arrogance. That's what gets all the strong ones killed."
The sandstorm calmed slightly, revealing a crater where Rael had stood.
Empty.
Smoke rose from the dry ground.
Then, slowly… a voice echoed behind Crocodile.
"You talk too much."
Crocodile turned—too late.
Rael's foot connected with his ribs, sending him flying into a stone pillar. It cracked and collapsed, dust clouding the air.
Rael landed softly, arms crossed. His coat fluttered around his form, and his gaze was cold.
"I'm not some random bounty hunter," he said.
Crocodile stood up, blood on his lip. "I noticed."
His smirk returned, but this time it was tight. Forced.
"So, you've learned Haki. That makes things… more interesting."
"Is that what this world uses to fight monsters like you?" Rael asked calmly. "This power… it's not bad."
He thought back to the way energy flowed inside him—how he'd honed his body in his sealed realm for decades. His strength had always come from within. He didn't need magic spells or flashy tricks. But Haki… this was different. It was raw. It was instinctual. It was will made real.
And he could feel it—he had barely scratched the surface.
Crocodile wiped blood from his lip, chuckling. "You're a freak. You know that?"
Rael didn't respond.
Crocodile's smirk widened. "Then how about I stop playing around?"
He slammed his hook into the floor.
"SABLES!"
A tornado of sand exploded upward, roaring to life. The force of it sent debris flying across the chamber, forcing Kaya and Vivi to duck behind what was left of a stone arch.
Rael's eyes narrowed as the whirlwind charged at him. With a deep breath, he planted his feet—and punched forward.
The two forces clashed. Haki-infused fist versus Crocodile's desert storm.
The pressure was immense.
The chamber's walls cracked. Pillars fell. Screams of agents echoed in the distance as the clash sent shockwaves in every direction.
Dust swallowed the room.
Then—
Silence.
In the aftermath, Crocodile stood panting, blood running from his nose and his cheek torn. His clothes were shredded. His hook, slightly bent, twitched in his hand.
Across from him, Rael stood tall, breathing steadily, eyes glowing faintly. His shirt was ripped, but he was otherwise unharmed.
"You're insane…" Crocodile hissed.
Rael gave a half-smile. "You're not the first to say that."
Crocodile gritted his teeth.
"I'm not done yet."
His hand surged with sand again—but Rael disappeared.
A heartbeat later, Crocodile was slammed against the wall, Rael's arm pressed against his throat.
"I'm giving you one chance," Rael said coldly. "Stand down."
Crocodile's lips curled upward even as blood spilled down his chin.
"I don't… stand down."
And with a final surge of power—
He exploded into sand and vanished into the cracks of the chamber.
"Damn it," Rael muttered.
He turned just as Kaya and Vivi emerged from cover.
"You're okay!" Kaya rushed to him.
"I'm fine," Rael nodded. "He ran."
"He'll come back," Vivi said. "Crocodile doesn't give up easily."
Rael's gaze narrowed. "Let him. I'm not finished either."
But something deeper gnawed at him now. Crocodile's escape wasn't the issue. It was the power—Logia. The overwhelming versatility of Devil Fruits. And if Crocodile was this strong…
What else waited out there?
In the shadows of the New World?
Above them, the roof cracked. A tremor shook the structure.
They had to get out.
"Let's go," Rael said. "The rebellion needs to see this place fall."
And as they turned to leave, Rael glanced back.
Even now… he could feel that strange presence from beyond watching him again.
Not the gods.
Not this world.
Something else.
And this time… it felt a little closer.
