The Seven Vampire Lords Of Sin

Chapter 3: 3. The Artifact

~ Daisy ~

"Daisy!" I exclaimed with an excitement I hadn't felt in years.

It felt surreal, but it wasn't a dream. Here I stood, back in my human form after years of being cursed. No more crouching on all fours like a rabbit.

Tonight was a night of miracles, and heaven had sent me a savior - a red-haired woman. She looked perplexed, her hazel eyes scanning me up and down. I understood her confusion; humans rarely grasped the supernatural. But that didn't matter now. All that mattered was that she had brought the golden artifact that lifted the ancient curse.

"You need not worry," I added when she remained speechless. "I mean no harm." I bit my lip, and my eyes darted downward in fear. I trembled slightly, but I concealed it well from her.

Now that I was human again, I had nowhere to go. The curse had occurred years ago, and I had lost my entire family. I was the only one who had managed to escape.

"Who are you?" she asked again, her voice laced with a hint of fear, which she bravely masked, appearing calm.

I looked up again, locking eyes with those hazing hazel orbs. Something about her sent shivers down my spine, a warmth I hadn't felt in years, not since I was with my people. The warmth spread through me, calming my troubled mind. Although her hand still clutched her dagger, poised to strike at any moment, I didn't flinch. Strangely, being near her felt like coming home.

"You were a rabbit..." she trailed off, struggling to process the unbelievable occurrence. Then, she tossed her head back, her fiery red locks dancing around her, her lips curved into a laugh. "I must be mad," she whispered, "it can't be... A rabbit didn't just turn into a girl. Heaven help me!" She sucked in a deep breath, then turned to me again. Shaking her head, she sheathed her dagger.

"I don't know what kind of power you possess," she said through gritted teeth, fighting to contain her shock and surprise. "But I want you to return to wherever you came from and give me that gold."

My eyes widened as I realize her intention. No! Although she had brought the artifact that lifted the curse, I couldn't let her possess it. The artifact was too powerful for an ordinary human to have. Now that the curse had been lifted, the artifact would help me reunite with those who possessed magic, but had yet to reclaim their powers. They were the ones who could aid me in fighting against the vampires who had caused all this suffering.

"No," I whispered loudly enough for her to hear. My voice was soft, but it echoed through the night. "I won't let you have it. It's too powerful for a human." The artifact was my only hope for reclaiming my place in this world, my only lead to finding more of my people.

"What do you mean, 'too powerful'?" she asked, her interest piqued, her eyes narrowing. "I don't care what you think you are anymore. My primary aim is that gold," she said, pointing towards it. "I won't leave here without it."

"Why?" I blurted out before I could stop myself. "Why do you need the gold? If it's that important, I can get you gold, but not this. I cannot give you this." I knew I was wrong to offer, considering I didn't know her or what she had endured to obtain the artifact. Still, I couldn't risk it, not when it held the key to awakening my powers and those of my people.

The girl's eyes darkened, and hatred began to consume her like smoke. She grasped the dagger once more, poised to strike like a predator. "You leave me no choice," she hissed, inching closer.

I swiftly clutched the artifact to my chest, the golden imagery carved in the likeness of a woman - our Supreme Mother, who had bestowed magic upon my people. Although I didn't possess my powers at that moment, and I was no match for this human, I refused to give up the last thing that truly mattered to me.

"No," I whispered, dropping to one knee as she pounced towards me. Her hazel eyes, once soft, now blazed with flames, ready to incinerate anything in their path. Her sharp blade sliced through my skin, and the metallic stench of blood hit me, evoking memories of death - the death of my people, my mother. Tears burned my eyes, but I held fast to the artifact, refusing to release it.

The girl pounced, landing beside me with the ferocity of a lioness. Her eyes, devoid of remorse, gleamed with a warrior's intensity. All I saw was a fighter, driven to stop at nothing to claim what she desired.

"Hand it over, and I won't have to hurt you again," she growled, her gaze boring into me. I flinched, shaking my head as I stumbled backward.

"Please," I begged, wincing as the wound on my shoulder throbbed. The pain shot through me, piercing my bone, but I gritted my teeth, refusing to yield.

"You have your magic," she taunted, spewing the words as if they were trivial. "Why won't you use it?"

"It's pointless," I lied, my voice barely above a whisper. "I don't want to involve magic in this. I might harm you." But the truth was, I had lost my powers, a consequence of the curse. This artifact was my only hope for reclaiming them.

She let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "I'd advise you to use it, little girl, because I won't go easy on you." Then, she sprang towards me like a cheetah, poised to pounce and end me once and for all.
