The Seventh Base

Chapter 107: One Must Die

Underneath power, there are many dark sides that remain little known to the public.

Yet, Xu Mo had never imagined that on Lucas Star, which seemed so civilized, Douglas could be so insanely cruel.

A female student from Lucas University, and moreover, a child of the nobility, died because of a breakup.

Xu Mo suddenly felt a sense of desolation. It seemed that from the moment Avril and Douglas were together, her fate was sealed. Constantly tormented mentally, Avril would one day become unbearable, turn to suicide, or break up. But, both outcomes led to the same end.

That meant that Avril was essentially on a path to death.

After he met Avril, his intention was to help her break free, and he indeed did so. Avril gradually returned to some normalcy, recognized reality, and told him that she wanted to break up.

At that time, they both thought it would be Avril's release, but unexpectedly, it was a dead end.

At this moment, Xu Mo's Communicator vibrated. After seeing Carter's name, Xu Mo answered.

"Clay died from suicide, left no clues. Although the case is a bit strange, the evidence has already been destroyed," Carter began. Since Clay had been dead for some time, trying to pursue the truth now seemed hardly possible; all evidence had long been erased.

"Avril is dead," Xu Mo said. Carter was taken aback and did not respond at once.

"Avril is dead too?" Carter repeated, afraid he had heard wrong.

"Yes," Xu Mo said. "A few days ago, she said she planned to break up, but I just received the news that there was an incident with Avril."

Another stretch of silence followed, seemingly laden with oppression.

Carter certainly hadn't expected Douglas to be so outrageous. To die over a breakup?

Given Clay's case, and now Avril's, there really was no longer any need for doubt. It couldn't be such a coincidence.

But Carter didn't understand—how dared Douglas?

No matter how dark things were beneath the surface of power, rules still had to be followed. That Douglas could kill a Lucas University student, a child of nobility so blatantly, what else wouldn't he dare do?

"I'll look into it," Carter said, and then hung up the Communicator, his voice containing a hint of anger.

With the stature and power they wielded, killing one or two people indeed wasn't very difficult, but still, there had to be a line.

Having put down the Communicator, Xu Mo sat motionless, waiting for a message.

At this moment, he radiated an air of malice, an emotion he hadn't felt for a while.

"Douglas!" A cold murderous intent flickered in Xu Mo's eyes. A passing female student who wanted to greet him felt a sudden chill. Xu Mo's gaze instilled fear, what was going on?

He just sat there waiting, and after some time, Carter called back.

Xu Mo answered but said nothing.

"Avril died from suicide, overdosed on medication in her dormitory; Douglas was not present at the time. The school is doing its best to contain the news. As of a short while ago, Avril's body was already taken away, without causing much stir," Carter said.

His voice was low, somewhat stifled. Two suicides—it couldn't be such a coincidence. They both knew these weren't just simple cases of suicide.

However, Douglas had an alibi, which meant it was unlikely they could take him away for questioning, given his status.

"Was he really not there, or was he made not to be there?" Xu Mo asked.

"It's confirmed—Douglas couldn't have entered the female dormitory; he was indeed not there," Carter said. "Given Douglas's status, at most he would be asked a few questions, and it's highly likely this case will just fade away."

"Fade away, huh," Xu Mo felt a sense of ridicule, Avril had died in vain.

"When did it happen?" asked Xu Mo.

"Avril's death was discovered this morning, her body was just taken away," Carter replied.

Xu Mo was about to say something but then saw a figure approaching from a distance. He fixed his gaze on the figure, slowly putting down the Communicator in his hand and hung up.

There, a short-haired man was walking towards him, his eyes filled with a cold intent, sharp as knives.

Douglas!

He had actually shown up here.

The moment Douglas entered the Library, he had his eyes on Xu Mo. A few days ago, Avril had proposed a breakup to him, which was surprising. Did Avril really dare to initiate a breakup?

In Douglas's eyes, Avril was nothing more than his plaything. Would he allow a toy he'd touched to go off and be touched by others? That would disgust him. A woman he'd touched either remained his toy forever or vanished—there was no third option.

After Avril died, the police examined her Communicator and questioned him. Douglas was shocked to find that there were chat records between Avril and Xu Mo, and quite a few of them, about music, about art.

How romantic!

So, was this the reason Avril broke up with him?

Had Xu Mo touched her before she died?

"Click!" Douglas's fist made a crisp sound. His posture was straight, his footsteps seemed to carry a swift breeze, and his gaze toward Xu Mo was as sharp as a knife.

Xu Mo, a lowly librarian, had laid hands on a woman he had touched?

This made Douglas feel a surge of intense disgust and, of course, rage.
