Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Boys Can't Be with Boys
"Yo, Orochimaru, what made you suddenly decide to move back in?"
After hearing from Hiruzen that Orochimaru had left Danzō, Jiraiya immediately rushed over to his place.
At the moment, Orochimaru had just completed a commission from a wealthy merchant and was counting his gear at home. Seeing Jiraiya climbing in through the window without even knocking, his tone turned cold.
"Knock."
"Come on now, we've been friends for years, don't be so cold."
Jiraiya shamelessly leaned closer to Orochimaru, curiously examining the items in his hands.
Kunai, shuriken, ninja blade, smoke bombs.
For a shinobi—especially a jōnin—these tools were very common and frequently used.
But for Orochimaru, these things were a little...
"How rare. I remember you haven't accepted a mission in a long time."
Jiraiya naturally threw his arm around Orochimaru's shoulders.
Orochimaru tried to shake him off, but found Jiraiya stuck to him like a stubborn leech. Realizing resistance was futile, he gave up and vented his annoyance with words.
"Too close."
"Tsk, tsk, tsk. Come on, Orochimaru, you're being so distant. We've been playing together since we were kids, you know." Seeing that Orochimaru still wore a frosty expression, Jiraiya tried to joke to lighten the mood.
...
"So boring. I really am better suited for gathering material, hehehe..."
Bored out of his mind, Jiraiya left Orochimaru's house. Seeing his friend couldn't even be bothered to walk him out, he sighed in disappointment, reached into his robe for his little notebook, and smiled lecherously.
On the other side, on a weekend break, Takeshi arrived at a secluded little plaza at Kakashi's invitation.
"What's with all the secrecy?" Takeshi looked puzzled at Kakashi, who had been waiting there.
Without saying a word, Kakashi pulled out a scroll from his robes and handed it to Takeshi.
"What's this? A love letter someone asked you to pass on to me?" The scene gave Takeshi the feeling of a light novel. While mumbling to himself, he obediently reached out and took the scroll.
"This is from my father. He asked me to give it to you." Already used to Takeshi's odd thought patterns, Kakashi sighed. As he handed over the scroll, he also took the ninja blade off his back.
"And besides, who would ever fall for a jerk like you?" Kakashi added casually.
"How rude, Kakashi. I'll have you know I'm an adorable, handsome young man who catches the eyes of countless girls." Takeshi said with a narcissistic grin. "Unlike you, the moody and repressed type, I'm a bright and sunny boy—a proper and decent person through and through."
Tilting his head back proudly, Takeshi took the scroll from Kakashi's hand and opened it to read.
"I thought it'd be something dramatic, but it's just the Hatake Sword Style. Huh? The Hatake Sword Style?!" After a quick glance, Takeshi read the title aloud casually, then realized something, and held the scroll up for a closer inspection.
"Holy crap, this is the sword technique that made Sakumo-san famous! The one you were reading the other day, right?" Closing the scroll, Takeshi looked at Kakashi for confirmation.
"Yeah. What I read back then was a family copy that had been passed down. This one's a revised version based on my dad's own insights. I mentioned you were interested in passing while writing to him. But let me make it clear—I didn't do this just for you—" Kakashi turned his head away, just about to hand over the ninja blade, when he suddenly felt something wrap tightly around him.
"Hahaha! I didn't expect you to be so thoughtful. All my doting on you hasn't been in vain!" Laughing heartily, Takeshi wrapped an arm around Kakashi, his face close enough that Kakashi could feel his breath.
"You bastard, let me go!" Kakashi's ears turned red from Takeshi's breath. He shoved him away, and seeing Takeshi about to move in again, hurriedly thrust the ninja blade at him.
"This is my dad's blade. He said I should give it to you too."
"Sakumo-san's blade? Then that would be..." Just about to grab Kakashi's collar, Takeshi froze, his expression turning serious.
When it came to Sakumo's blade, it could only mean the chakra short sword known as "White Light Chakra Sabre." It was said that Sakumo once used it to perform the legendary move—One Thousand Years of Death.
That technique really did involve a white blade going in and a yellow blade coming out.
That thing could pierce through anything—heck, it could probably cure the worst case of hemorrhoids.
"This gift is far too valuable. I can't accept it." Takeshi carefully put away the scroll, but shook his head firmly at the sword.
And it definitely wasn't because that blade had stabbed some poor enemy's unmentionables. Definitely not.
"You're getting serious now of all times?" Rolling his eyes, Kakashi leaned closer and shoved the sword into his arms.
"Take it. My dad said this is his way of thanking you. He's doing well now, living out on the border."
Placing both hands on Takeshi's shoulders, Kakashi stopped him from refusing again.
"Then... I guess I'll accept it?" Feeling the weight of the sword in his hands, Takeshi realized he couldn't refuse anymore and finally accepted Sakumo's goodwill.
Seeing that Takeshi no longer resisted, Kakashi was about to remove his hands from Takeshi's shoulders—
"Hey, isn't that Kakashi and Takeshi? What are you two..."
Obito's greeting abruptly cut off.
Coming from behind Kakashi, he saw the two of them from a rather... ambiguous angle.
"You... you two..." Obito's not-so-bright brain whirled at top speed, trying to make sense of the situation.
"What's wrong?" Takeshi leaned his head out, curiously looking at Obito, completely unaware of the massive shock he and Kakashi had just delivered to Obito's innocent heart.
Obito's gaze darted between Takeshi and Kakashi's faces. His own turned beet red, but he couldn't say a word.
"Wait, don't misunderstand!" Seeing Obito's expression, and realizing what it looked like from an outside perspective, even the worldly Takeshi understood what was going on. He quickly tried to explain.
"There's nothing going on between us! Kakashi was just giving me a gift!"
That only made things worse.
Obito became even more convinced of what he'd just witnessed.
"I—I—I misjudged you, Takeshi! I can't believe you'd hook up with Kakashi just for a present! Boys can't be with boys!"
With that, Obito didn't wait for Takeshi's explanation and bolted.
"What?! Who's hooking up with who?! What do you mean by that?!" Kakashi was dumbfounded. What was going on? How did this become a thing between him and Takeshi?
"You idiot, go stop him already!" Seeing that Kakashi still didn't get it, Takeshi was furious. He shoved Kakashi's hand off his shoulder, and before Kakashi could react, he took off running after Obito, scroll and sword in hand.
