Chapter 50 Trouble
“…I’ve lost this match.”
I hate to admit it, but I never expected Glenn to acknowledge his defeat. The worst possible outcome… I had prepared myself to take down this man.
Nevertheless, I was hoping that Abigail Princess or General Cyrus would intervene before that happened…
“Prince Gustave!”
“What!?”
Abigail Princess rushed toward me with all her might, jumping into my arms. Instinctively, I let go of my saber and embraced her.
“I’m so glad… that you’re safe. I’m really, really glad…”
“Yes… thanks to you, I’m unharmed.”
Her crimson eyes welled up with tears, and she nuzzled against my chest. I gently stroked her lustrous golden crown of hair.
“Haha! As expected of His Highness!”
“Prince Gustave, you won convincingly!”
“Amazing!”
“Woah!”
This time, General Cyrus, Mick, Terry, and even Abigail Princess were all gathered around, playfully jostling us. But I was truly delighted to see them so happy.
Then, Glenn approached Abigail.
“Lord Glenn…”
“Princess Abigail… I apologize for my numerous impertinences.”
He placed his claymore on the ground and knelt down, lowering his head.
“I should be the one to apologize, not you, Lord Gustave. Your numerous insults and disrespectful behavior are unforgivable.”
“Ugh…”
In a dreadfully low voice, Abigail told Glenn, who could only lower his head in response. However, I couldn’t accept an apology from him either.
“Princess Abigail, there’s no need for his apology. What’s more important is for Lord Glenn to revere and serve you as his lord and the spear of the empire.”
“But… thank you.”
Unconvinced, Abigail furrowed her brows and alternated her gaze between me and Glenn. My fiancée is truly adorable.
“Thank you for caring about me so much and for valuing me. I’m really happy.”
“Ah… saying such things is unfair…”
Abigail Princess blushed deeply and looked down.
And Mick, Terry, please don’t make those faces. It’s somewhat embarrassing to say lines like these when we’re not alone…
…
Claire, with a troubled expression, silently left the training grounds.
Where is she going?
“I’m sorry. I’ll be right back.”
“Oh!”
I picked up my saber discreetly, left the training grounds, and followed Claire.
“Where did she go?”
Unfortunately, I lost sight of Claire. But that expression… there must be something going on.
I looked around, but I couldn’t find her anywhere.
“Oh… could it be…”
I remembered the storage shed where Claire had called me before. She might be there. Thinking that, I hurried to the storage shed.
“…So, you failed so miserably.”
“…”
I could hear voices from inside the shed. One was Claire’s, and the other was a raspy male voice.
But from the presence I could sense from inside, there seemed to be at least a few others present.
“You said to us, ‘I will definitely separate Gustave from Princess Abigail.’ But what’s the result? In the end, it’s not Lord Glenn’s victory as you assured.”
“Sigh. How am I supposed to explain this to that person…”
That person… huh…
I had suspected that someone was behind Claire, but having the power to allow such individuals to come and go freely within the palace would indicate a fairly high rank, likely a member of the royal family or someone closely associated.
At least, it would be clear that these people were concerned about us coming together, although they wouldn’t care much about me, a lowly sixth prince, and Abigail Princess, who was like an unwanted lottery ticket for the kingdom.
So why would they go through the trouble of using Claire to separate us?
“…By the way, you haven’t told anyone about this, right?”
“Yes, I haven’t told anyone… not even my brother.”
“I see.”
“Wha-!?”
Suddenly, a strong killing intent emanated from inside the storage shed.
In other words, these people were intending to eliminate Claire.
“I’m sorry, but this is also for the sake of that person…”
Ha… what a fool.
Why did Claire follow these suspicious individuals?
Really…
“…”
I was a fool.
Claire could have been left alone, and yet I got myself involved in this mess.
