The son of the God-Emperor in Warhammer Fantasy

Chapter 397: Chapter 397: The Warpstone Portal

Grand Master Ernst of the Witch Hunters was slaughtering through the Skaven horde. He wielded a sword in one hand and an axe in the other, attacking with a deadly precision. Each strike, whether a cut or a block, was like an art form, and every blow took the life of at least one Stormvermin.

In the intervals between attacks, Ernst would also draw his pistol and fire.

If the reloading speed of the former Witch Hunter Jacob was unseen, then Ernst's reloading speed was imperceptible. In the blink of an eye, his fingers reloaded the gun, and he fired two shots, swiftly killing a Skaven warlock and a Gutter Runner.

"Ugh ah ah!" Ernst crossed his sword and axe again, killing another Stormvermin. He then looked into the distance.

A terrifying beast was facing off against a Holy Grail Knight.

"A Hell Pit Abomination. Where does this Grail Knight get the confidence to face such a beast?" The Grand Master's eyes burned red with concern. He knew the strength of a Grail Knight but also recognized that this giant monster was a formidable opponent.

The Hell Pit Abomination roared, opening its six arms. The twenty or thirty rat heads on its body screamed in fury, and its four-legged body charged directly at Ryan.

The Grand Master of the Witch Hunters worried for the young Grail Knight's prospects. He understood the strength of a Grail Knight, but this monster was undeniably a powerful foe.

Facing this twisted abomination that defied the laws of nature, Ryan's expression was stern. He drew the Goddess of Vengeance from his back and advanced slowly toward the beast.

"Ah ah ah ah!" The Hell Pit Abomination's six arms opened wide, the twenty or thirty rat heads on its body screaming in unison. Its massive body charged at Ryan.

Ernst watched, his eyes burning with concern for the young Grail Knight. He knew the strength of a Grail Knight, but this abomination was a formidable opponent.

The Hell Pit Abomination roared, its third left arm wielding a long warpstone scimitar. As Ryan approached, the scimitar sliced through the air in a green arc, carrying enough force to shatter stone.

But it hit nothing. Ryan had vanished from the spot, leaving only empty air.

The Lady's chosen champion moved like a phantom, effortlessly dodging the attack. His right hand swung the Goddess of Vengeance through the air, and with a sound of tearing flesh, the arm holding the warpstone scimitar was severed. An iron boot stomped down on the fallen flesh, grinding it into the ground.

"Snap!" The entire arm was reduced to pulp.

"Ugh ah ah ah! Kill! Kill!" The Hell Pit Abomination released its full fury. The cacophony of the rat heads' wails filled the battlefield with noise. Meanwhile, Ryan's iron fist pounded into the beast, forcing it back under the strength of his blows.

The abomination extended its right arm, which ended in a massive spike glowing green with warpstone energy, spinning rapidly. Another left arm wielded a chain mace with a plague censer emitting noxious fumes.

"Boom!" The plague censer struck, raising a cloud of dust. The poisonous smoke had no effect on Ryan. Dodging the censer, he swung the Goddess of Vengeance in a diagonal slash.

"Clang!" The warpstone-powered spike was deflected by Ryan's strength. The Lady's champion grabbed the abomination's arm, his muscles tensing as the bones within the creature creaked.

"Open!" Ryan roared, tearing the warpstone spike from the beast's arm. In its anguished howl, he snapped the spike off and drove it through the abomination's chest, impaling one of its rat heads and piercing its alchemically fused body.

Before the beast could recover, Ryan swung the Goddess of Vengeance again, severing the arm with the plague censer. He grabbed the iron chain of the censer, swinging the massive weapon twice before smashing it down onto the abomination's head.

Green, yellow, and red fluids sprayed everywhere. The abomination's main head was shattered, its teeth broken, as it struggled to recover. Ryan's sword, glowing with lightning, tore at its nerves.

The abomination howled in rage, spewing green flames from its mouth and one remaining arm. It swept its lower limbs forward in a desperate attempt to strike Ryan, forcing him back.

But no attack could quench Ryan's resolve. His body shimmered with lightning, a pale blue glow and white flames surrounding him. On the battlefield, everyone could almost feel a great presence unshackling itself.

"For the Lady!!!"

The blade of the Goddess of Vengeance cut through the abomination's filthy flesh, its gleaming arc imbued with the will of the Lady from across the mountains. The abomination screeched as a warp lightning cannon was torn from its body, the sword carving through the beast's chest.

Blood gushed out. Ryan leaped off the abomination as it tried to fire its warpstone machine guns. Ducking under a sweeping left arm, Ryan slashed with the Goddess of Vengeance, tearing through the mutated muscle and stitched organs. This time, the wound would never heal. The abomination felt a second wave of excruciating pain within three seconds.

That was its last arm. Now, in front of Ryan, stood a six-armed creature, all its limbs severed and bleeding profusely.

The coalition forces roared in triumph, celebrating Count Ryan's impending victory, while the Skaven began to break. They formed a ring around the Broodmother, preparing for a final stand.

After cutting down two more Stormvermin, the Grand Master of the Witch Hunters realized he had witnessed a truly epic battle. Ernst, who had lived too long, felt a surge of long-lost passion ignite in his chest. If he ever had such feelings before, they were rekindled now.

Ernst began to understand why the Bretonnian goddess had chosen Ryan as her champion. Despite fighting such a filthy creature, there was no sign of corruption on him.

The Hell Pit Abomination, unwilling to give up, charged like a dragon, then raised its chest, green light bursting forth.

Inside its chest, cables connected to a massive warpstone. Now, green arcs of electricity crackled as the abomination overloaded the warpstone energy, preparing to self-destruct!

"Damn it!" Bellegar smashed a Plague Monk into a pulp with his hammer. "The abomination is going to self-destruct!"

Ryan said nothing. He charged forward.

The cables within the abomination's chest accelerated, burning and crackling with electrical noise. It screamed, determined to take everyone with it in a desperate bid to protect the Broodmother.

The warpstone began to burn, green cracks appearing on its surface, accelerating the energy release. The abomination roared with its last strength, intending to sacrifice its enemies to the Great Horned Rat.

The scream stopped abruptly.

Ryan's hand plunged into the abomination's chest, tearing out the massive warpstone. His hand broke through the warpstone armor, ripping through the abomination's filthy flesh to extract the warpstone. Deprived of its power source, the Hell Pit Abomination collapsed. Ryan had defeated the Skaven's monstrous creation.

With the abomination's fall, the Skaven army disintegrated. Seeing the unbeatable monster felled by the Grail Knight, no Skaven dared continue fighting. They fled in panic.

Reiksguard Marshal Helborg seized the opportunity, leading the Greatswords and Dwarf Rangers forward. Foot Knights and Angrund Oathsworn advanced together until Sulia's Leonase Sword pierced the Broodmother. Halhaver Noggins activated the Iron Drake, incinerating the Broodmother and hundreds of surrounding rats.

Marshal Helborg sighed with relief. Despite losing ten Greatswords and eight knights in the battle, the victory was acceptable. The Broodmother had been reduced to ashes, and the remaining Skaven posed no significant threat. "Alright, what's our next move?"

"Follow the right-angled square mouse-shaped symbol. It marks the portal's location," Bellegar pointed to the sign on the wall.

A right-angled square mouse shape? Ryan wondered what shape that was. He looked up and saw that Bellegar was right.

It was just three symbols put together.

The coalition forces rested briefly and continued forward. Ryan took deep breaths as he approached Bellegar, but before he could speak, Bellegar said first, "Oh! Ryan, my friend, you fought well. I like seeing you bathed in Skaven blood. By Grimnir's name! By the King of Angrund and the Eight Peaks, accept this Dwarven praise with gratitude and satisfaction."

Sulia stifled a laugh, her face full of pride and joy as she held her husband's arm.

"This analogy sounds strange, but I accept your praise, King Bellegar." Ryan found Bellegar's awkward compliment hard to endure, so he smiled casually. "Eliminating evil is what I should do and what the Lady always expects of me."

"Oh ho~ Your goddess likes her chosen champion to kill rats, huh? We might have a lot to talk about," Bellegar lifted his hammer.

"Not just rats, but all evils and enemies of the Lady that I must eliminate." Ryan subtly shifted the topic from the Skaven.

"For humans, indeed. You always fight for survival." Bellegar hit a soft nail and continued, "With the Broodmother dead, this Skaven clan is heavily damaged and essentially crippled."

"The Broodmother's death is great news for the Empire. But how were you sure the Broodmother would pass through our location?" Reiksmarshal Helborg took the opportunity to ask further.

"The Skaven's failure to capture Helmgart disrupted their plans, making it unsafe for the Broodmother to stay here. If I'm correct, this clan is retreating through the warpstone portal. Our task is to destroy the portal and, if possible, kill the warlord," Bellegar explained, stroking his white beard. "If we succeed, we might learn the Skaven's plans and movements. My clan has experts who study Skaven language."

The army continued through the mine tunnel, encountering several small skirmishes. The retreating Skaven showed no desire to fight, only to flee.

After a long march, Sulia suddenly stopped. "Wait!"

"What is it?" Ryan signaled for everyone to halt.

"We should be in Montfort's territory now. Look at this mark," Sulia pointed to an emblem in the dimly lit mine, the black and white castle shield of Duke Fulcard of Montfort glowing in the ancient stone structure.

"It seems the Skaven's target isn't only the Empire," Reiksmarshal Helborg glared. "You Bretonnians should warn Duke Montfort when you get the chance. For now, our priority is to destroy the portal!"

"The portal is just ahead," Bellegar pointed to a distant green glow.

It was a massive ring constructed of warpstone and Skaven technology, suspended by thick iron chains. A few Skaven were still retreating through it, while Warlord Osed-Deep Abyss, holding a long halberd, waited impatiently.

A distress signal from the Broodmother had been cut off abruptly, leaving Osed in agony, unaware of the Broodmother's fate. It was a clan's lifeline!

"Damn, damn! Hairless ones! The Great Horned Rat won't spare you!" Osed was about to shout more when a barrage of grenades, bolts, and bullets rained down on his location.

The Skaven were stunned by the attack, their morale plummeting. Most rushed toward the portal in panic.

Too late. The cables of the portal were severely damaged. In the smoke and wreckage of the warpstone machinery, a Holy Grail Knight, a female knight, a Reiksmarshal, a Witch Hunter, and a Dwarf began to emerge.

Osed ordered his guards to protect him. He saw his army collapsing and was about to demand who would face him when the Holy Grail Knight pointed at him and shouted.

"Against such evil creatures, no need for chivalry. Everyone, attack!"

"Charge!!!" The coalition forces surged forward like a tidal wave.

"???" The Skaven Warlord couldn't believe it. This knight was even more treacherous than the Skaven!
