The Strongest Demon Lord Reincarnated as a Commoner

Chapter 5: The Descent into Whispers

The selection of Leo Vance was a firestorm. For the next two days, it was the only thing anyone talked about. The decision was seen as an inexplicable, almost insane, move by the revered Headmistress. Why would she stake a mission of national importance on a commoner with zero official aptitude and a reputation for laziness?

The designated team was summoned to a private briefing room. The atmosphere was thick with tension. Elara stood with her arms crossed, her expression radiating icy disapproval. Kaia was practically vibrating with excitement, shadowboxing in a corner. Luna was trying to make herself as small as possible, her gaze fixed on the floor.

And Leo was leaning against a wall, his eyes half-closed, looking as if he might fall asleep standing up.

Commander Evelyn Blade stood before them, a large map of the Whispering Labyrinth laid out on a table. Her scarred face was grim.

"Listen carefully," she began, her voice cutting through the tension. "The Whispering Labyrinth is a Dungeon of Unstable Reality. Its layout shifts. The creatures within are not normal beasts; they are manifestations of chaotic magic. Our objective is twofold: reach the Core Chamber and place this."

She held up a heavy, obsidian obelisk about a foot long, covered in calming runes. "This is a Harmonizing Spire. It should stabilize the Labyrinth's core. Your second objective is to survey and report any unusual phenomena. The Royal Mage Division believes something is actively causing the instability. Find out what."

Her gaze fell on each of them in turn.

"Valerius, you are our primary offensive power. Your wide-area spells will handle crowd control." Elara nodded curtly.

"Ironhand, you are the vanguard. Your job is to engage any high-threat single targets and protect the caster." Kaia gave a sharp, eager salute.

"Brightwood," Evelyn's voice softened almost imperceptibly. "Your sensitivity is our compass. The Labyrinth will try to deceive us with illusions and false paths. We are relying on you to feel the true direction of the Core." Luna looked up, startled, a heavy weight of responsibility settling on her shoulders.

Finally, Evelyn's cold eyes landed on Leo. There was a long, awkward silence. The entire team, including Leo, waited to hear what his supposed "unpredictable problem-solving ability" translated to in a practical sense.

"Vance," the Commander said, her tone flat. "Your role is... baggage carrier."

She tossed a large, heavy-looking pack filled with rations, potions, and camping gear at him. It landed at his feet with a heavy thud.

A snort of laughter escaped Elara. Kaia looked indignant on Leo's behalf. Luna just looked confused.

"You will stay at the back, you will stay quiet, and you will not get in the way," Evelyn commanded. "The Headmistress has her reasons for including you, and I will not question her judgment. But in my squad, you will contribute by being as little of a liability as possible. Is that clear?"

"Crystal," Leo replied without a hint of emotion, easily slinging the heavy pack over his shoulder. It should have been a struggle for someone of his build, but he handled it as if it were filled with feathers. Another small, unsettling detail that Evelyn filed away in her mind.

The decision was a strategic one on her part. She didn't trust him. His performance in her class was a persistent, nagging anomaly. By assigning him a menial, non-combat role, she could keep him under close observation at the rear of the formation, where he could cause the least amount of trouble.

As the briefing concluded, Elara strode up to Leo, her green eyes flashing with scorn. "See to it that you handle the 'baggage' with competence, commoner. Do not slow us down with your ineptitude."

Before Leo could respond with his usual sigh, Kaia jumped between them. "Hey, back off, Princess! Leo's got more skill in his little finger than you do in that fancy staff of yours! If anyone's gonna be a liability, it's the one who's probably never had to carry her own bag before!"

"What did you say, you tribal brute?!" Elara hissed, her hand glowing with faint magical energy.

"You heard me!" Kaia shot back, placing her hand on the hilt of her sword.

"Please, stop!" Luna squeaked, her voice trembling. "We're a team... we should be getting along."

The budding conflict was a perfect picture of their group dynamic: Elara's arrogance, Kaia's protective aggression, and Luna's futile attempts at peacemaking.

Leo simply sidestepped the entire confrontation, walking towards the door. "Are we leaving, or are we going to stand here measuring things?"

His complete lack of interest in their posturing doused the flames instantly. Elara and Kaia shot each other one last glare before turning to follow the Commander, who was already marching out.

Luna scurried to walk beside Leo. "Are you... are you okay with that?" she asked quietly, referring to his assigned role. "It's not fair."

"It's the easiest job," Leo replied. "Less work. I see it as a promotion."

Luna stared at him, a small, involuntary smile touching her lips. His perspective was so strange, so different from anyone she had ever met. It was... comforting. She felt her own anxieties lessen just by being near his unshakable calm.

The entrance to the Whispering Labyrinth was a gaping maw in the side of a mountain, a shimmering, hazy tear in reality that distorted the air around it. The "whispers" were not just a name; a faint, unsettling chorus of voices seemed to emanate from within, speaking in a language that was almost, but not quite, understandable.

"Stay close. Do not listen to the voices," Commander Blade ordered, drawing her gleaming sword. "Once we cross the threshold, the way back may not be the same. Brightwood, lead the way."

Luna took a deep, shaky breath. She closed her eyes, trying to block out the unsettling whispers and focus her senses. "It's... this way," she said, pointing to a path on the left. "The core feels... warm. But it's also... afraid?"

Evelyn nodded, her expression grim. "Let's move."

They stepped through the shimmering veil, and the world changed.

Behind them, the sunlit entrance vanished, replaced by an identical stone wall. They were in a vast cavern lit by glowing, phosphorescent fungi. The air was cool and damp, and the whispers were louder now, seeming to come from the walls themselves.

Power awaits...

Let us in... free us...

She is lying to you... the path is the other way...

"Ignore them," Evelyn's voice cut through the haze. "Vance, check your pack."

Leo did a quick inventory. "Everything's here." He felt the subtle shift in reality, the way the Labyrinth was probing them, testing their minds. To him, it felt like a curious toddler poking at his leg.

As they ventured deeper, the Labyrinth began to test them physically. The ground would suddenly turn to thick mud, or a chasm would appear where a solid floor had been moments before. Each time, Luna would sense the change just before it happened, allowing them to navigate the dangers.

Then, they found the first creatures.

They shambled out of the shadows—beings of twisted stone and malevolent purple light, their forms constantly shifting. "Chaos Golems," Evelyn identified them. "Valerius, now!"

Elara, who had been waiting for her moment, stepped forward. "Finally," she muttered. She raised her staff, its crystalline head glowing brightly. "[Chain Lightning]!"

A bolt of brilliant white electricity erupted from her staff, striking the lead golem. It then arced, jumping from one to the next, until all half-dozen creatures were convulsing, their stony forms cracking under the pure magical energy. It was an impressive, devastating display of power.

She lowered her staff, a smug look on her face. She glanced back, expecting to see awe. Kaia looked impressed. Luna looked relieved.

Leo was yawning.

Elara's eye twitched. The sheer, unadulterated disrespect of it was infuriating. Her ultimate display of power, a spell that would make most mages green with envy, had earned a yawn from the useless baggage carrier.

"Is my spellcasting boring you, Vance?" she snapped.

"It was a bit flashy," Leo commented nonchalantly. "You used about thirty percent more mana than was necessary. The residual energy is making the whispers louder."

He was right. The whispers had taken on a frenzied, excited edge after her spell.

"I don't need casting advice from a zero-aptitude commoner!" she retorted, her face flushed with anger and embarrassment.

"Enough," Commander Blade cut in. "He's right, Valerius. Conserve your energy. We don't know how deep this place goes."

Elara fell silent, but the glare she shot at Leo could have melted steel. The jealousy was no longer just about his mysterious skills; it was now deeply personal. He had publicly criticized her greatest strength.

They continued on, the atmosphere even more tense than before. Kaia handled the next few encounters, her sword a blur of silver as she dismantled the creatures with brutal efficiency.

They reached a vast, circular chamber with a chasm in the middle. A single, crumbling stone bridge spanned the gap. Luna pointed across. "The core... it's just beyond this room. The feeling is very strong here."

As they stepped into the room, the whispers rose to a deafening roar, and the ground began to shake. From the chasm, a colossal form began to rise. It was a serpent made of pure, solidified chaotic energy, its head larger than a carriage, its eyes burning with malevolent violet light. It was a creature far beyond anything they were told they would encounter.

"Arch-Demon class entity!" Evelyn shouted, her face paling. "This is beyond our mission parameters! We must retreat!"

But as she turned, the doorway they had entered through crumbled into dust, sealing them in.

The serpent let out a reality-bending shriek. The stone bridge cracked, half of it collapsing into the chasm. Luna screamed, losing her footing on the shaking ground and tumbling towards the edge.

Kaia was too far away. Elara was frozen in shock at the sheer magical pressure. Evelyn was already moving to engage the serpent, drawing its attention.

No one could reach her.

Except Leo.

With a sigh that seemed to say 'this is precisely what I was trying to avoid,' he dropped the heavy pack from his shoulder.

And then, he moved.

He didn't run. He didn't leap. He simply took a single step, and in the space between one moment and the next, he was no longer at the back of the room. He was at the edge of the chasm, his hand wrapped firmly around Luna's wrist, effortlessly halting her fall just as her fingertips slipped from the crumbling stone.

He pulled her back onto solid ground with the ease of lifting a doll.

The entire team stared. Kaia, Elara, even Commander Blade in the middle of her life-or-death confrontation with the serpent—they all saw it. It wasn't speed. It was not a physical phenomenon. It was as if he had simply edited his position in the universe.

Luna looked up at him, her eyes wide with terror and utter, boundless astonishment. She was safe. He had saved her, moving in a way that defied all logic.

Leo looked down at her, then glanced at the colossal chaos serpent, then back at the stunned faces of his teammates.

He let out the most profound, deeply annoyed sigh of his new life.

"This," he said to no one in particular, "is going to be a lot of paperwork."
