The Tales of Draconic Warlock
Chapter 288: First Quest (5)
Hmm, they have yet to make their move.
What are they waiting for?
Our acting was perfect and they couldn't have seen through us. If they did, they would have scrambled long ago but they didn't. It means they are still gunning for us.
The only reason why they have not made their move was because they have a plan, a proper plan.
Hmm, what could that be?
I mean, we have almost hunted the required minimum to submit for the quest. So, we would return soon. If they don't make a move before we reach the city, then...wait, reach the city.
Huh, why didn't I think of that?
It would be an excellent time to attack us or anyone else for that matter.
Everyone would be full of energy when they leave the city, so attacking at that time is stupidity, unless you can wipe them out with a single strike. If not, that person would certainly escape and would become a problem.
So, no one would attack when someone left the city unless their purpose was to attack them after that someone left the city.
During the hunting of monsters, that would be the best time to attack while ensuring that they themselves wouldn't be injured much. This was because the adventurers would be concentrating on the monsters and were perceptible to easy attacks.
This might not always work as most adventurers while in the wild would always be on guard, looking out for dangers, especially while fighting monsters. They would be worried about any sneak attacks that might happen.
So, even though it might look easy, that time is also when everyone would have their guard up to the maximum. Unless they were too tired and injured due to the battle, taking them down would not be easy.
The scenario, where one would let their guard down was when they were returning.
One usually needs to keep their guard when going towards danger, not when returning to safety. So, usually, their guards would be down.
Even though that was the case, I don't think those veteran adventurers would have survived long if they downed their guards but they are veterans who must have survived a lot.
Who are we?
We are newbies. Someone who doesn't understand how cruel the world can be. So, it would be expected that we would let our guards down as we near the city.
It would be the best time to attack us without losing much on their part.
Hmm, if this is their plan, then I should say that they are quite intelligent. The bad thing was they were greedy as hell.
If they were so intelligent, they should have seen through our disguises as "Sheep" and recognized for what we are "Wolves".
Due to their greed, they didn't see, no couldn't see that we are Wolves in Sheep's clothing. If they had, they would have scrambled a long ago. Still watching us in stealth means they are waiting to pounce on us for the wool but they would get the jaws of wolves.
They would learn a lesson, never judge a book by its cover nor let greed control you but bad luck for them, as they would learn those lessons just before their deaths and can't make good use of them.

(Third PoV)
"Boss, this would make the number fifteen. Soon, they would be on their return journey", one of the lackeys spoke.
The boss nodded, "Yes, soon we will get the chance to get rich, but don't jinx it by toasting before we get those spoils as you can see that there are many eyes on those riches. It won't be an easy fight", he cautioned everyone.
To these robbers, those three kids meant nothing. They are just sitting gold mine but the problem is the other robbers who came here for the same reason as them.
They have been doing this for a long time. They have clashed before over spoils like what they would get now. So, almost everyone knew everyone.
To get those riches these robbers have to compete with the other robbers. The winner would get all. This was something they knew very well.
Of course, sometimes in order to not attract the city guard or others who might cause trouble for them, they would divide the spoils but that was only in the scenario where their fight might be too loud and can attract others.
The chances of that happening are too low.
This was something everyone knew. So, they have to pay attention till the end or else might lose what they came here for.
Though everyone knew that robbery might not always give what they want, no one is willing from the start to get nothing, not after waiting and watching those "sheep" for such a long time.
They need to fleece the sheep at least a little bit or all the time that they spent here would be for nothing.
---
The three kids completed collecting the fifteen rabbits and sat down where they just ended the last battle. For them, it would be enough to complete a quest for each one of them.
So, they sat down to restore the stamina and magic that they spent in these battles. Without restoring them, they can't last long and returning back to the city would be a nightmare.
After a few minutes of recuperating, they stood up and walked back in the direction of the city.
"It looks like they are returning. Everyone stays focused. We might have to be prepared for the best moment. So when that comes, I will give an order and you will be ready to follow", the boss spoke and everyone nodded.
For now, they all followed the sheep for a while.
"Now is the time. Attack", the boss ordered as soon as he thought that was the perfect moment to attack.
When the lackeys heard their boss's orders, they acted upon the "kids".
It was not just them who acted. Every robber did. This was because they saw the targets as easy picks and the first to act might get everything and others might get nothing.
So, they couldn't delay and acted simultaneously seeing others acting as well.
