Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Rainy Night
Raindrops fell steadily from the sky, pattering against the windows.
Inside the Guild headquarters, Eina sat at her desk, looking up toward the window and gazing at the scenery outside.
"…It's raining."
Just moments ago, a golden moon had been shining overhead, but now thick clouds had gathered, and the rain poured down in sheets. Pedestrians scrambled to find shelter, and soon enough, the streets emptied of people entirely.
Eina paused her paperwork, listening quietly to the rain as it drummed steadily against the windows, her mind momentarily drifting.
"Ughhh~ Pulling overtime during a torrential downpour… this is just the worst~."
"…It's probably just a thunderstorm. It'll stop by the time we head home, right?"
A colleague wandered over to the desk buried under mountains of files, letting out a sigh as she watched the rain cascade outside.
It was around 9 p.m. Despite the late hour, staff members were still locked in combat with overtime work in the Guild's main hall. Supervisors looked utterly defeated, desperately tackling stacks of documents. One such employee—Eina's colleague and friend, a young human girl—groaned as she slumped onto Eina's back.
"I know this is the busy season with the festival paperwork and all, but can't the higher-ups give us a break? Not everyone's as superhuman as you, Eina~."
"Come on, Misha—you're heavy! Don't get in the way of my work!"
"Ehh? No way… wait a sec—did you already finish all the festival reports?"
Ignoring Eina's weak protest, Misha peeked at the files spread out across the desk, her eyes going wide.
Before Eina could stop her, she reached into the pile and slyly pulled out one of the pages.
"…New adventurer registration details… oh! Is this for that newbie you're handling?"
"…It's just a summary for the team lead. Nothing special."
Eina let out a sigh, realizing there was no point in trying to hide it now.
The paper Misha held contained a basic profile: race, place of origin, experience, Familia affiliation—essentially, the standard required information for someone living in Orario.
At the top of the form, the name listed was: Yoru.
"He reached the fifth floor in just three days?!"
Misha yelped in surprise. That kind of speed was unbelievable.
"Well… not exactly. He didn't properly clear each floor. He just kept diving deeper, getting lucky until he hit the fifth floor. And even then, he almost died down there."
Thank the heavens I didn't write about how he reached the ninth floor… that would've been too outrageous.
Eina fluttered her long lashes with a sigh. Just thinking about how Yoru completely ignored her warnings, how he brushed off her lectures with that infuriating nonchalance—it gave her a splitting headache.
Ughhh… Why did I end up with him of all people?
"Well, it's not entirely his fault, right? Wasn't it that Minotaur the Loki Familia missed? Even a veteran would struggle with something like that."
"Sure, the Minotaur was unusual… but that idiot went down to the ninth floor! The ninth floor!"
Eina muttered under her breath. Misha couldn't quite catch what she was saying.
Taking the profile back from Misha, Eina stared at the notes section.
That kid always thinks a bit of luck means the dungeon's going easy on him… He doesn't realize how easy it'd be to die like that.
His equipment was practically useless, he had no companions, and he was wandering the vast Dungeon solo with nothing but luck. It was likely he hadn't even experienced a proper battle yet.
If—when—he ran into a real monster, he wouldn't stand a chance.
"…Either way, I won't let him be reckless again. If he dares pull something like that a second time, I'll inform his goddess and have him grounded!"
"Wow, this is way past protective. You're basically spoiling him. Why do you care so much about that kid anyway?"
"W-What?! I don't care! I'm just mad! He's a complete idiot, that's all!"
Eina huffed indignantly, her cheeks coloring slightly at her friend's teasing remark.
Seriously… it's so frustrating… That indifferent look on his face… risking his life like it means nothing…
Doesn't he realize how many people are worried about him?! That kind of attitude is absolutely unacceptable!
Although she scolded herself with these thoughts, her face continued to flush deeper red, and her elven ears grew warm with embarrassment.
Worried? Me? No way—absolutely not!
…I wonder what he's doing now. Did he listen to anything I said?
◇
"It's raining."
Having returned to the church from the tavern, Yoru glanced out as rain began to pour from the night sky.
Hestia wasn't back yet. She was probably delayed by the sudden downpour.
Thinking this, Yoru turned and headed toward the basement of the church. The old, crumbling structure wasn't great at keeping out the rain.
Just then, footsteps echoed behind him. Yoru paused and turned, curious—who would visit this remote place at such an hour?
There, standing quietly in the entrance, was a girl with beautiful golden hair like silk and doll-like features. Ais Wallenstein. She looked straight at him with her piercing, dignified golden eyes.
"Miss Wallenstein…? What are you doing here?"
Yoru looked surprised, wondering why she had followed him all the way here.
"…You used magic, didn't you? On Bete?"
"Eh? Magic…?"
Yoru looked even more confused. He had no idea what she was talking about.
"Bete's words were harsh, but he's still my comrade. I don't want to see anything bad happen to him. If this was meant as punishment… then surely it's already enough, right? Can you forgive him?"
Ais spoke gently and earnestly, her expression sincere.
Yoru, however, just looked increasingly baffled.
"…I really don't understand what you're talking about. I just slapped him. That's it. That shouldn't be such a big deal… right?"
