Chapter 55: Chapter 54: Nine Schools Competition Departure Day 2
Three hours ago, the bus to the Fuji Training Ground lingered at First High. Yugen, already aboard, got a call from Mayumi.
"Yugen?" Mayumi's voice crackled.
"Rare call, President. What's up?"
"Family business. I'll miss the meet-up… that tanuki dad…" she muttered.
Ignoring her grumble, Yugen stepped off the bus. Miyuki looked forlorn; Honoka noticed, calming a grumpy Shizuku. Yugen explained to Tatsuya and Mari outside. Consulting Katsuto was skipped—he'd likely defer to Mayumi's stance. Mari and Tatsuya agreed to wait to avoid team backlash. Mayumi sighed but consented. The team was informed, minimizing chaos, though some grumbled.
Mayumi's "family business" raised questions. Her father, Koichi, knew First High's schedule. With two older brothers, why detain Mayumi? The Seven Grass clan's social nature contrasted with Mitsuya's early summons. Likely, a key figure—someone Koichi couldn't ignore and worth Mayumi meeting—visited unexpectedly. Three candidates, two already at the venue, left one: a figure tied to a potential "original story" accident. Koichi might be shielding Mayumi, leveraging Seven Grass influence and information control. Yugen left it to the Juumonji's purview, dismissing direct interference with "that person."
Back to the present: Mayumi arrived an hour and a half late, sprinting in a summer dress, heels clacking. "Sorry!"
"Late, Mayumi," Mari chided.
"Sorry, you two," Mayumi apologized.
"No worries. Yugen, take it from here," Tatsuya said, marking his tablet and heading to the tech vehicle.
Mari folded her parasol and boarded. Mayumi, about to follow, turned to Yugen. "How's this look?"
"Fits you. Perfect for a team leader idol. Might draw other schools' attention," Yugen teased.
"Thanks," Mayumi said, clasping hands, leaning in with a coy glance. Her dress accentuated her figure, but Yugen sighed inwardly—save it for your fiancé.
"Time's tight. Get on," Yugen urged.
"But—"
"My seat's taken. You must be tired from meeting 'His Excellency.' Rest on the bus."
Mayumi froze, stunned he deduced her vague "family business." Yugen ushered her aboard, avoiding a frosty bus atmosphere from a certain someone.
On the moving bus, Mayumi pouted. "What does Yugen think I am? I wanted to sit with him, but he chose Miyuki."
Rinne, beside her, eyed her warmly. The comment could imply rivalry with Miyuki. "Sound judgment," Rinne said.
"What was that, Rinne?" Mayumi asked, smiling coldly.
"Avoiding your trap," Rinne clarified.
"Harsh!" Mayumi protested.
"Your 'Magician' dodge failed against his 'Magician' moniker," Rinne teased, misheard as "Demon Face" instead of "Demon Eye."
"Rinne! I'm done!" Mayumi huffed, turning to the window.
Hattori, holding a blanket, approached. "President, are you unwell?"
"Not like that…" Mayumi started.
"You shouldn't worry others, but health comes first," Hattori insisted, noticing her dress had ridden up, exposing her thigh. Blushing, his voice faltered.
"Vice-President, where are you looking?" Rinne interjected.
"N-no! Just the blanket!" Hattori stammered.
"Then use it," Rinne said.
What are they doing? Mari sighed. Mayumi teased Hattori, who vented on second-course students, upsetting Mayumi—a vicious cycle Mika noted last year. Yugen reduced Mayumi's teasing, but Hattori's stress lingered, unresolved.
Mari knew Mayumi bore heavier burdens. The Watanabe family, descended from Watanabe no Tsuna, had declined but rose as a Hundred Families branch. Mari's exceptional talent drew expectations, unnoticed until the Great Asian Alliance's Okinawa invasion three years ago.
Two months later, Gozo Kamiizumi brought Honami Sakurai to be adopted by the Watanabe. The Kamiizumi, a storied ancient magic family without a number yet influential, dubbed "Sorcery of Zero," prompted the Watanabe patriarch to accept. Eight months later, Honami's engagement to Motoharu Mitsuya tied the Watanabe to the Ten Master Clans, elevating their status. Gozo, aware of Mari's Chiba family romance, ensured no arranged matches arose, to her relief.
Mayumi, Seven Grass heiress, faced marriage proposals since childhood, now engaged to the Itsuwa heir, though strained. Her prodigious talent and student council role piled on stress. Mari cut her slack.
The Mitsuya? "Beyond the pale." Five of six siblings, including Yugen, shone exceptionally, unmatched among peers. Marriage proposals flooded in, including from other clans, but were declined as the siblings weren't keen. With Motoharu's Four Leaves tie and the second son's Kamiizumi marriage, the Mitsuya held a strong position, their "unconventional" prowess securing their clan status.
Mari glanced out, spotting Kanami Chiyoda, a second-year, by the window. "Something wrong?" Kanami asked.
"Just looking outside," Mari replied.
Kanami, Mari's pick for next disciplinary chair, had Tatsuya and Yugen prepare handover documents. The Chiyoda, a core Hundred Family, ranked below the Ten Master Clans and Eighteen Assistants. The Ten Master Clans—Ichijo, Futatsugi, Mitsuya, Yotsuba, Itsuwa, Mutsuzuka, Saegusa, Yatsushiro, Kudou, Juumonji—aligned numerically for the first time, a rare feat. Kanami's talent matched her lineage, but her gloom stemmed from personal matters, not family.
"Two hours to the dorms. Can't wait?" Mari asked.
"Harsh! I can wait, but I wanted to travel with Kei," Kanami whined.
Kanami and Kei Isori, fiancés, were open about their love. Mari regretted prying. Kanami's fervor partly came from Tsugumi Igarashi (third-year) and Toya Mutsuzuka (first-year) sitting ahead, stirring her emotions.
